Many more questions are possible about this recording.

You are the manager of an advertising agency and you advertisechildrens

toys. Recently, your company advertised many popular toys on TV one day
before a popular holiday.
But some parents are angry with you. They say you have deliberately exploited
their easily-led children with such persuasive advertising that they have
demanded toys that the parents cannot afford.
Prepare your case. Here are some of the things you might say:

You do not force anybody to buy the products If the advertising is so bad, why
let children watch TV at these times? You believe that your products are
educational and necessary for the childrens intellectual development You deny
that your ads are over-persuasive
Now think of some more things you can say:
You are the parent of two young children, 7 and 6 years old. You want to
make your children happy, but you dont have a lot of money. Because of the
ads, your children are nagging you for toys.
So you go to see the manager of the agency to argue the case of parents
everywhere.
Here are some things you can say:
You think it is scandalous that so much pressure is put on innocent children to
be in with the crowd You think that it is unfair that so much money is being
made when parents such as you are struggling You think the adverts should be
later in the evening so adults can decide what to buy without pressure from the
children You want the manager to understand that children do not realise that
their parents have limited funds
Now think of some more things you can say:

Royal Hotels, a hotel company, wants to build a large 300 room resort hotel on
Coral Beach, a quiet beach next to a small fishing village. The company thinks it
can become a popular tourist attraction because tourists can enjoy beautiful
beaches, visit the local fishing village and explore the rainforest.
The idea is controversial. To build the hotel, Royal Hotels would need to build a
road through the rainforest. A local environmental group, Landwatch is worried
about the impact the hotel will have on the environment and wildlife. And the
local residents in the fishing village are worried about the negative impact on
their way of life.
Group A: Royal Hotels
In order to build the hotel, Royal Hotel needs permission from Landwatch
to build a road through the rainforest.
The hotel needs workers in the hotel (restaurants, shops etc) and to run
tourist services (fishing tours, etc)
Tourists are interested in visiting natural areas like the ocean and the
jungle, going to clean beaches, eating at good restaurants, seeing life in a
traditional fishing village and going sport fishing.
Royal Hotels is willing to spend one million dollars to preserve natural
areas and/or help the fishing village.
Group B: Landwatch (you represent the environment: protecting the animals,
plants, water, etc)
Because the population is small, there is very little pollution.
Some of the villagers make money by hunting wild animals in the
rainforest and selling them to restaurants in other cities. Landwatch want
to preserve the wildlife. It wants locals to stop hunting the animals, but the
locals need the money.
Landwash also wants the villagers to stop taking too many fish from the
ocean, so the fish population can grow again.
Landwatch needs money to continue rainforest research and teaching the
villagers how to preserve the environment.
Group C: Villagers
People in the village live a traditional way of life. They have many rituals,
crafts and customs and they are afraid these traditions will be lost if the
village changes.
The village is not well developed. It needs better roads and utilities (water,
electricity, phones). The nearest hospital is 3 hours away and most of the

villagers dont have cars. There is a small school but it needs more
teachers and supplies (textbooks, paper, pens etc)
There is a high unemployment rate in the village. There are less fish in the
see, so there is less work for the fishermen.
Some villagers earn extra money by hunting animals in the rainforest and
selling them to restaurants in the city. Landwatch is trying to stop people
from doing this, but the villagers need the extra money.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: If you live each day as if it was your last,
someday youll most certainly be right. It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past
33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: If today were the last day
of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today? And whenever the answer has been
No for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that Ill be dead soon is the most important tool Ive ever encountered to help me
make the big choices in life. Because almost everything all external expectations, all pride, all
fear of embarrassment or failure these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only
what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the
trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to
follow your heart.
About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly
showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didnt even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me
this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no
longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order,
which is doctors code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought
youd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything
is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your
goodbyes.
I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an
endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my
pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me
that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned
out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and
Im fine now.
This was the closest Ive been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more
decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when
death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven dont want to die to get there. And
yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be,
because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Lifes change agent. It clears
out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from
now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is
quite true.
Your time is limited, so dont waste it living someone elses life. Dont be trapped by dogma
which is living with the results of other peoples thinking. Dont let the noise of others opinions
drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and
intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is
secondary.
