Institute folds
Centennials players! Friday 7pm Merritt

Facing declining membership & the

loss of its major funding source, the
Nicola Valley Womens Institute decided
to wrap up and close the local branch of
the national organization.
The Womens Institute was going
strong when I moved here in 1962, said
longtime member Bev Stanich.
Over the years, the organization has
been involved with many community
projects planting & caring for the flowers around (before the City took over),
landscaping the grounds of Ainsley
Court, working at the Fall Fair, and
fundraising for their Adopted Family
program, among inumerable others.
Bev said that the group decided to
close the Nicola Valley branch while they
still had some funds in the bank to be
able to put them to good use. They were
able to disperse sizable donations to 3
local organizations, and fulfill their donation to their Adopted Family for
Thanksgiving & Christmas.
Wed like to thank the citizens of
Merritt for their contributions of Extra
Foods till slips (which get converted to
gift cards for the Adopted Family). Without your help, we could not have done it
in the same way.
The till slip collection program will
live on under the administration of the
Patricia Rebekah Lodge. If youd like to
help out, please drop off your till slips in
the box at Interior Savings Insurance,
across from the Post Office.

NVIT Vancouver hosts

T&R symposium

This Wednesday & Thursday, NVIT

Vancouver, along with BC Ministry of
Advanced Education, hosted the BC PostSecondary Truth and Reconciliation Summit
at the Wosk Centre in Vancouver.
Participants discussed the role that
post-secondary institutions can play in
reconciliation. Working group sessions
focused on engagement with Indigenous
communities, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and
Curricula, incorporating Indigenous protocols into institutional practice, and Indigenous research.
President Ken Tourand said: NVIT is
excited to partner with the Ministry of
Advanced Education to bring together
post-secondary institutions committed to
Indigenous education and the collaborative creation of a made-for-BC approach
to advance reconciliation efforts within
higher education. I am optimistic that
this two-day Truth and Reconciliation
Summit will have a significant impact on
Indigenous post-secondary education in
BC for years to come."
