The Past Continuous Tense

Uses
1. We use the Past Continuous tense when we want to describe an action that was happening at a
particular time in the past:

Yesterday at 5 I was swimming.

Last summer we were living in London.
Last weekend we were trying to get to Brussels.
I was studying for my maths exam yesterday at 10.30.

2. We also use the Past Continuous tense when we want to describe an action that happened while
another was happening in the past:

While she was

sleeping the
telephone rang.
During the lesson
somebody knocked
at the door.
We were having a
great time when my
parents returned.
She was reading
when it started to
rain.

The Past Continuous tense is one tense further back in the past from the Present Continuous.

I am going
I am learning.
I am sleeping

- I was going.
- I was learning.
- I was sleeping.

Remember: the past tenses in English are not necessarily the same as the past tenses in your language. Think
of how you would say these in your language:

I was going.
I was studying.
I was sleeping.
