JUNE 2010

Pastor’s Letter Dates to Remember:

Sunday, 6/20/10
Temple Tidings: June 2010
FATHER”S DAY !
“Behold, I make all things new!” Rev. 21:5
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!
God continues to bless Tremont Temple with wonderful worship services. We
are experiencing many new visitors and first time confessions of faith. There is
a spirit of excitement and encouragement. We are anticipating the new things
God wants to do with TTBC!
Perhaps this excitement and new era of friendship is best exemplified by the
recent Ladies' Tea. There was a real friendship among the women. There was
laughter and crying. There was singing and praying. There was a seriousness that
we must be about the Lord's work.
SUNDAY MORNINGS
Ms. Wendy Ryan of Evangeline Ministries told how God had challenged her
to go in faith and start a ministry in South Africa for HIV/AIDS patients. Her Bible Study - 9:30 am
address was a wonderful challenge to how God will guide us if we step out on Adult - 7th floor
faith. At the conclusion of the tea, we all formed a large circle in Chipman Hall
Children/Youth - 5th flr.
and told of our countries of birth. It was amazing to see that we were from 22
different coutnries. This very fact of our international membership helped me ARISE - Quiet Rm, 5th fl.
focus on the new vision we need for energizing and growing Tremont Temple, Men - Chapel
particualrly among our international friends. We have, indeed, become an
international church for all peoples!
One of the challenges of the new Church Council, is to take seriously the
Worship Service -
Congregational Assessment of TTBC by Dr. George Bullard. This will be one of 11 am Converse Hall
the first items on our agenda when we meet.
We need to listen to Dr. Bullard‘s assessment since he has had experience with WEDNESDAYS
many congregatons and conventions that have gone through death and rebirth
6/2, 9, 16, 23 & 30
cycles.
Please read, prayerfully, the following partial assessment of our congregation:
Pre-Prayer Mtg. Fellowship
“Tremont Temple Baptist Church is definitely in the Old Age stage of its life Chipman Hall
cycle and stages of congregational development. At the same time, there appears 5 : 30 pm - 6 :15 pm
to be a rising spirit and an anticipation of a new, positive future. Will this rising
spirit be strong enough and sustain movement long enough for transformation to
Bible Study & Prayer -
take place?
The greatest challenge of a congregation, with simultaneously a rich history 6: 30 pm - 7:30pm Chapel
and a troubled past is, "Can it focus clearly enough on the future to make
the radical changes it must be willing to make to move forward? Will the PEOPLE SING!
congregation be willing to focus primarily on the future and the new journey Sunday, 6/6/10 12:30 pm
God has for it? ..... Chipman Hall
The only strategy that really works in the Old Age stage for a congregation to
have a future vitality and vibrancy is to reinvent itself. This involves
figuratively turning the page and starting with a clean sheet of paper to design a “Singing Women of
new congregation from a biblical and spiritual foundation forward with as few Texas”
non-negotiable factors as possible. The fewer the number of non-negotiable Sunday, 6/13/10 - 11:00 am
elements the better the launch into a new future will be.“
Concert ~ 4 pm
An Old Age congregation is typified by management. Bullard characterizes Converse Hall
TEMPLE TIDINGS Page 2

the problems with management leading the church instead of vision in this way: "Once a congregation attains the stage of
"Maturity" in its congregational life cycle, its progress tends to be fueled by management rather than vision. Over a
number of years, these management principles become increasingly controlling. Ultimately management becomes
dysfunctional and management principles begin to break down."
Against this life cycle is that of infancy and re-birth which is typified by vision. Again, Bullard helps us understand this:
"Vision is a movement of God that is memorable, and not a statement that is memorized. Congregational leadership casts
and casts vision until the congregation is captivatd by it. Vision is not something you catch. It is something by which you are
caught."
Ultimately, members of TTBC have to ask themselves what is our vision for tomorrow? Where is Christ leading us? What
is the Spirit telling us about mission and evangelism in 21st century Boston? Our methods and actions will be different from
the 19th century beginnings of this congregation. We are living in a post modern culture which, in many cases is publicly
hostile to the Christian faith. Therefore, we must ask ourselves, how can we do mission in such a situation? How can we be
messengers of Christ to a generation that has lost hope and is without a future, and has no basic knowledge of the Christian
faith?
During this year, we must seriously review this Congregational Assessment. We will keep you updated and involved.
We need your prayers, encouragement and support. We know that Tremont Temple does not belong to us, but it belongs to
Christ. Therefore, we must seek the mind of Christ in all that we do! We must be a contagious congregation that attracts
others seeking hope and faith. Pray that God will continue to bless us wth unity and a new vision of where we need to go
and what our new vision should be. Pray that we will have courage to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in our midst.
Finally, REJOICE in the new things God wants to do among us! We covet your prayers, encouragement and support!

In addition to the above, I want to emphasize the following events which will help our outreach:
1. People Sing, join the choir on Sunday, June 6th, following our worship service for a time of fellowship and fun.
2. Singing Women of Texas: We are pleased to host the Singing Women of Texas who will give a special concert in
Converse Hall on Sunday afternoon, at 4:00 p.m. on June 13th!
3. All Church Fellowship: We have worked with the Chair of the Minstry of Worship, LeSette Wright, to organize All
Church Fellowship hours for this summer: Sundays: July 4th, and Sunday, August 8th. These will be held in the lobby area
outside of the sanctuary, following our morning worship.

NOTE about the Budget for 2010/2011: Unfortunately, the Budget for 2010/2011 was not ready for the Church Annnual
Meeting in April. The Church Council is meeting within the next week to give final approval for the new budget. After that,
we will call a Special Business Meeting to approve the budget. Watch for further details.

Yours in the Joy of Christ,

Denton Lotz, Pastor

JUNE 2010 OUTREACH MISSIONS NEWS

OUTREACH - I think, is the most exciting and yet the most challenging endeavor a church could get involved in. I will
share what God has placed on my heart. Feedback would be highly appreciated.

I propose that Outreach shall be operationalized on three levels:

1. Individual level:

Andrew Program- Individual Witnessing. This is patterned after the example of Andrew when he found the Messiah. Our
authenticity of belief in Jesus will be reflected in our fervent desire to share Who we have found with others on an individual
basis. The challenge was shared with the Men’s Bible study to identify one individual they could reach out to and that, as a
group, we could pray for. It was well received. The same idea will be presented to Deacons to have them identify their own
Peters. It is my prayer that each member of Tremont will be one with this. Those uncomfortable with the idea of individual
witnessing, may participate in a prayer group. To equip us on individual witnessing, we could organize workshops to brain-
storm and discuss the challenges of witnessing individually.

2. Reach out on a group level

Boston is the home of a large student population. The idea was inspired by drawing from an experience of a Pastor, who
recently moved to Maine and started a ministry for International students. He opened his home to these young people and
now has a steady number of students, not only enjoying his Filipino food, but BETTER food…feeding from the Word of
God! Tremont Temple’s doors can be opened to draw these Internationals to our Lord, Jesus Christ! During the fall semes-
ter would be an ideal time to begin, as many students flock to Boston. If you have a heart for International students, please
get in touch with the Outreach Missions Committee as we flush out how to operationalize reaching out to these students.

3. Reach out on mass level

Initially, what is implementable would be an evangelistic concert. The Filipino Fellowship has done this before at Tremont
Temple. We could organize a Concert again. A Filipino artist could be invited. This is a very low cost or even self- sustaining
project. I am only giving this Concert as an example. Maybe other members of our church community can think of other
ways to reach out to their counterparts. We are ONE body, and I believe a lot of ideas need to come out in the open. Please
send your feedback to secretary@tremonttemple.com or to ernievee@gmail.com.

My prayer is that the Lord will refresh each of us with the precious treasure we have found in Jesus Christ and that it would
be our individual, group and church body desire to let this be known and shared in Boston and beyond.
