TAKING THE FIRST

STEP

Dear Expectant Parent,

Congratulations! This must be an exciting time for you as you await the arrival of your
baby. With your pregnancy coming to a close, we are glad that you consider stem cell
banking as one of the essential preparations for your newborn.
Rich in stem cells, cord blood could one day save the lives of your loved ones. A precious
gift that would otherwise be discarded, cord blood derived stem cells are proven source of
treatment for life-threatening diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma. Researchers
worldwide are also studying the potential application of different types of stem cells
derived from another source your baby's umbilical cord. So far, studies reported have
been promising, giving families more reasons to store umbilical cord stem cells too for
future use.
We understand that stem cell banking is a personal decision that should be made with a
full understanding of the current and potential lifesaving possibilities. In the
following pages, we have put together accurate and
evidence-based information on cord blood and
umbilical cord stem cells. We hope this will help you
make an informed decision on this once-in-alifetime opportunity.
Just like the parent and child bond, we at
Cordlife, are with you for the long haul. Having
been entrusted by tens of thousands of
families across the Asia Pacific region,
we are confident that we have the
right expertise and experience to
help you take care of your baby's
stem cells. At the end of the day,
we are here to give hope and save
lives.
We look forward to your joining the
Cordlife community.
With you always,

What is cord blood?

Cord blood, also called 'placental blood', is blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta following
the birth of a baby and after the umbilical cord is cut. During pregnancy, the umbilical cord functions as a
lifeline between mother and child. After the baby's delivery, the blood present in the umbilical cord could
offer hope for the child and members of the family.

What are cord blood stem cells?

Cord blood is a rich source of haematopoietic like stem cells (HSCs), a proven resource for the treatment of
many life-threatening diseases such as leukaemia and lymphoma. HSCs though are primarily responsible
for replenishing blood and regenerating the immune system, they also have the unique ability to differentiate
into various cell types found in the human body (as depicted in the diagram below).

Advantages of cord blood stem cells

Although stem cells can also be found in bone marrow
and peripheral blood (blood that circulates through your
body), stem cells from cord blood are increasingly being
used as a preferred source of adult stem cells for
transplantation (hematopoietic reconstitution). The table
below illustrates the advantages cord blood/cord tissue
has over other sources of stem cells.

How is cord blood collected?

The collection of cord blood is a painless, safe and quick process which does not interfere with the birthing
process. After the baby is born, the umbilical cord will be clamped and within minutes, the obstetrician or
care giver will drain the cord blood into a sterile single use blood bag. The collection kit provided by Cordlife
contains all the necessary materials to complete the collection of cord blood.
Of course, the collection of cord blood is secondary to any medical issues that may arise during the birth and
the final decision to collect always resides with the obstetrician or care giver.

What does cord blood processing entail?

Other than stem cells, cord blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma. The objective of
cord blood processing is to extract as much stem cells as possible for final cryopreservation.
Cordlife uses Sepax2 processing technology, which harvests 99.46% stem cells.

1 in every 200 people may need to use his or her stem cells in a lifetime.

1 in 500 babies has cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder incurred at

birth, which may be treated successfully with cellular therapy.

In the case of cellular therapy and regenerative medicine, only the

patient's own stem cells can be used in the treatment for best results.

A guaranteed match for autologous transplants (where the donor and

recipient are the same individual)
A readily available supply of stored haematopoietic stem cells. This compares
well to having to do a national or international search which is costly and timeconsuming in an already time critical situation.
No risk of Graft vs. Host Disease (GvHD) for autologous transplants, a
situation where the transplanted tissue attacks the patient's own tissue.

Ease of collection, which is pain-free and risk-free to both mother and

Umbilical cord blood stem cells are younger, and are more tolerant to tissue
mismatches, compared to other types of stem cells, e.g. bone marrow.

What is umbilical cord?

Umbilical cord functions as a lifeline between mother and child during a pregnancy. After a baby is delivered,
the umbilical cord is cut and normally discarded with the placenta as medical waste. This procedure is
painless due to the lack of any nerves on the umbilical cord.

What are umbilical cord stem cells?

A baby's umbilical cord has a large number of Epithelial Stem Cells (EpSCs) and Mesenchymal Stem Cells
(MSCs). While EpSCs are primarily responsible for forming the outer protection layer of the body or organ
such as skin, liver, pancreas, brain and gastrointestinal tract, MSCs have proven its capability to differentiate
into neurons, cartilage and bone.
Current research with these cells revealed encouraging results in the treatment of a wide variety of medical
conditions including stroke and replacement of cornea membrane. In the future, once these advances
translate to successful therapies, any family who stored their child's stem cells will have this resource to
support these potential treatments.

How is Umbilical Cord 3
Collected, Processed
and Stored?
5

16 | www.cordlifeindia.com

STEP1

After your baby's cord blood has

been collected, your obstetrician
or midwife will clamp and cut a
segment of the umbilical cord.
This cord will be stored in a sterile
container provided in your
Umbilical Cord Collection Kit in
dry condition.

STEP3

Next, the umbilical cord is further

processed, cleaned with wash
buffer solution and segmented
into small pieces.

STEP5

Once the cryoprotectant solution

has been added, the tissue sections
are frozen gradually in the
controlled-rate freezer, where the
temperature is lowered by 1-2C per
minute to preserve the viability,
potency and plasticity of the stem
cells.

STEP2

The umbilical cord collected is

then sent to Cordlife's laboratory
without being X-rayed during
transit for processing and
cryopreservation. Prior to
processing, the identity of the
umbilical cord collected is
verified by our laboratory
biotechnologist to ensure that the
unit belongs to the right client. All
subsequent steps are performed
in a biohazard safety cabinet to
further eliminate the risk of
contamination.

STEP4

The disinfected tissue sections

are then transferred into multiple
cryovials added with
cryoprotectant solution to
safeguard the viability of the stem
cells in the tissue sections during
cryopreservation.

STEP6

After the controlled-rate freezing

process, the cryovials are
transferred into a MVE anticontamination vapour-phase liquid
nitrogen storage system for long
term cryopreservation at -190C.

Advantages of our processing method

Cordlife uses its unique patented technology to process and cryopreserve the cord tissue derived
Mesenchymal and Epithelial stem cells. Cordlife's technology ensures maximum harvesting of stem cells at
the time of need.

Maintain the original characteristics of stem cells:

The cord tissue is cut into multiple pieces, placed in multiple petri-dishes and then processed; thereafter the
unexpanded, undifferentiated stem cells are put in multiple vials and stored in mesenchymal growth storage
medium and epithelial growth storage medium.

Retain the potential of all stem cells:

36 | www.cordlifeindia.com

Storing tissue sections of the umbilical cord is the safest and most reliable way to store all the stem cells
which can be derived from the amniotic membrane, Wharton's jelly, perivascular and peri-allantoic tissue,
which contain other potentially valuable stem cells yet to be identified, opening up more medical options for
your family in the future.

Expansion of stem cells:

Cordlife has the technology to expand the cord tissue derived stem cells multiple folds. Cordlife provides you
the option to expand the stem cells into 1 billion (500 million each) as cases like ulcers, burns and accident
require prompt treatment and theseexpanded stem cells can be provided for immediate use. However, the
stock of unexpanded and undifferentiated stem cells is kept intact. Moreover the use of animal protein and
membrane and carcinogenic cell extract free media ensures a safer and more acceptable yield.

Advantages of Cordlife's storage method : Multiple

cryovials
Cordlife uses multiple cryovials to store umbilical cord tissue
sections. By storing in cryovials, you have the option to
withdraw one cryovial at a time without affecting the viability
ofthe tissue sections in other cryovials. The cryovials are
further wrapped inside an overwrapbag to further safeguard
against cross contamination. When it comes to umbilical
cord blood banking, we always insist on the best so that our
clients can have better transplant and cellular therapy
outcome. The cryogenic storage tanks used by Cordlife,
MVE Anti-contamination vapour-phase Liquid Nitrogen
Storage System, have been used and trusted by the majority
of private cord blood banks in the world for decades. Unlike
other storage systems available in the market today, our
tanks have never been recalled by the U.S. FDA or the
manufacturer.

MVE Anti-contamination Vapour-phase Liquid

Nitrogen Storage System Designed for optimum
performance
Umbilical cord stem cells remain at cryopreservation
condition as long as they are stored below Glass Transition
Temperature (-135C). MVE system is designed to feature
precise temperature control at -190C, well below the
minimum storage temperature.
MVE system is equipped with a monitoring system that
scans for any out-of-range conditions to ensure the
temperature is always maintained at an optimum range
A liquid nitrogen reservoir is present below the sample
platform. This will typically maintain the desired temperature
for the samples in the storage tank for more than 20 days due
to vapour created by the liquid nitrogen.

in search for a cure. But wherever they went they found onlydisappointment until they learned that stem cell transplant is the
only permanent cure. During this time young Moinam went through a hard time because of regular blood transfusions, high
dose medications and a deteriorating health. The parents opted for stem cell therapy and planned for a second baby so that
the cord blood stem cells of the newborn could be used to save young Moinam's life. During his baby sister Ahoma's birth
her stem cells were collected and stored with Cordlife so that it could be used for transplant. The cord blood stem cells along
with bone marrow stem cells of Ahoma were used for this unique treatment, first such case in India. Since transplant young
Moinam has been showing signs of recovery and is already a figure of inspiration for many such suffering from this disease.
Young Moinam has started showing promises of improvement; his hemoglobin level has considerably increased which proves the engraftment has taken
place. He needs to be careful for another 3 months to ensure that his body gets used to the environment and then he can go back to a normal life.

An accident at birth 2 years ago deprived Baby Georgia of

oxygen to her brain, resulted in cerebral palsy. The damage
to the toddler's brain caused her to move involuntarily,
suffer from muscle spasms and have up to 50 seizures a
day. It was only after Cordlife put the family in touch with a
renowned neurosurgeon that enabled Georgia to be
infused with her own cord blood, also stored by Cordlife.
Her conditions have improved since then.
Georgia has made good progress since her stem cell infusion. She has better
visual focus and eye contact with adults during play. She has more vocalization
and tries to 'sing-a-long' by making different sounds to nursery rhymes. Georgia
has improved postural and head control and is observed to be reaching more with
her arms.Ms. Jaclyn Tan, Consultant Occupational Therapist at OzWorks

Little Ryan was suffering from leukaemia at a tender age of

three. Despite a nation-wide search for bone marrow stem cells,
a suitable donor could not be found. Fortunately, baby sister of
Ryan, Rachel was born during that critical period which enabled
the family to store Rachel's cord blood with Cordlife, for Ryan's
transplant. Now 13, Ryan is in school and his leukaemia is in
remission.
We were elated when Rachel's blood was shown to be a 100-per-cent match for Ryan.
The healthy cells from his sister re-populated in his bone marrow and revived his
immune system.Dr. Tan Ah Moy, Head and Senior Consultant for Haematology and
Oncology services at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital where the transplant was
performed.

Client Testimonials

Anindya Chatterjee
(lead vocalist Chandrabindoo band ,Kolkata )

I am a kind of person who does a lot of research before taking a

decision in anything important like this. Out of the stem cell banks
that I consulted before registration, I personally liked and highly
recommend Cordlife for multiple reasons. First, I have to really
appreciate their level of service which has over exceeded my
expectations. The stem cell collection was done professionally.
The collection lady stayed with us for 48 hours in the hospital
patiently for the normal delivery to happen. After the collection I received my
certificates stating that the stem cells were stored successfully in no time. Out of my
personal experience I had with Cordlife, I strongly recommend their services. Finally I
am relieved that my babys stem cells are in good hands. Thank you Cordlife for
making it happen. -
