Office of the Mayor Gavin Newsom

City & County of San Francisco

GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR

On behalf of the City and County of San Francisco, it is with great pleasure that our City is hosting West Coast
Green 2009, the nation’s largest conference on green innovation for the built environment, being held October 1-3,
2009 at Fort Mason Center.

Building green supports the triple bottom line of environment, economy and social responsibility. We understand
how important homes and buildings are in the fight to reduce global warming, and that building green can help to
stabilize our changing climate. The tremendous surge we are seeing in green building throughout the country shows
that the marketplace is responding to positive signs toward profitability. And studies are showing time and again
the value and importance of daylight and natural ventilation on personal health, worker productivity and student
achievement.

San Francisco has long been a leader in green building with one of the most aggressive programs in the country
for green building standards in the private commercial and residential sectors. We are extremely excited to tap
into new opportunities within the clean energy and clean technology sectors to help develop solutions for some of
our biggest environmental challenges.

The conference you are attending offers the very best in this rapidly expanding market. As green building
continues to gain momentum, it will be up to you to share this important information and continue to spread the
word. Welcome to San Francisco, and enjoy the conference.
With warmest regards,

Gavin Newsom
Mayor

The Home Depot Foundation IS COMMITTED TO
building healthy communities
AND WE PROUDLY SUPPORT West Coast Green

The Home Depot Foundation has made a commitment to invest $400 million in communities over the
next ten years. This will help support the creation of 100,000 affordable homes, built responsibly,
and the planting of over three million community trees. While we count the homes that are built and
the trees that are planted, the true impact of this work will be measured by the stories of people who
will be empowered to live healthy, safe and sustainable lives.

OUR PLEDGE: $400 million • 100,000 homes • 3 million trees
