LESSON 4
SAYING THE DATE,
TELLING THE TIME
4.1 ORDINAL NUMBERS
We must learn the ordinal numbers in order to read the date, because in English every
day in the calendar is an ordinal number. It is also used for anniversaries, position, order,
rank, etc.
To form an ordinal number we begin from the cardinal number form and add TH at the
end of the word with some exceptions.

As you can see the first three ordinal numbers are completely different from their
cardinal form.
Numbers 5 and 12 change the V in the ordinal for F.
Number 9 skips letter E of the cardinal form.
Numbers ending in TY change to TIETH when converted in ordinals.
But all of the rest keep their cardinal form and you only have to add the TH at the
end. In the abbreviated form the last two letters are written.
For numbers bigger than twenty only the last word (number) is changed into the
ordinal form.

To read the years in English you have to separate the numbers in two groups.

When reading the date in American English it is first said the month, then the day and
the year. Here is an example: the first is the abbreviated form of the date, the second is
the written form of it and the third is the way we say it.

Read
March fourth, twenty sixteen.
October twelfth, two thousand six.
July first, twenty twelve.
January fourteenth, twenty ten.
November sixth, two thousand two.
The date has a different order in British English. They read the date like we do. First
the day, then the month to finish with the year, like this:
04/03/2016
