New World Lessens Humanity
Have you ever felt like new ideas are always good? Brave New World, written by Aldous
Huxley, deals with civilized and savage worlds with the goal to use these two worlds to reflect
society. Brave New World talks about future world where everyone is equal and happy. People
are divided by a class system. This society is all about new ideas such as using technology to
produce humans. All the old ones, old literature and superstition, are prohibited. Huxley uses
human producing technology, zippers, and soma as symbols to show humanity lost in the world.
Firstly, Huxley shows the readers that there is no giving birth in this World State society,
but instead human producing technology in incubators is used. People in this society are divided
into the class system: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon by putting different amount of
oxygen and alcohol in the tubes when theyre in embryo state. Their lives are determined since
they are in the tubes. A student is wondering why the oxygen has to be kept below par for
Epsilons, the lowest class in the society. Mr. Foster explains how the human producing works in
the World State to the student. The lower the caste, said Mr. Foster, the shorter the oxygen
(Huxley, p.11). Epsilons cant be anything but the lowest class due to the amount of oxygen in
their bodies which determines their faiths. The value in everyone of being human in this society
is faded. Not only human producing technology but also the design of clothes lessens humanity
in this world.
The way that the clothing in the world state is designed with zippers shows the idea about
sex in the society. Conditioning is used to make individuals have an attitude towards having sex

with anyone as much as they want as a normal thing. They create an erotic play for babies to
experience and also zipping practice in order to make them feel comfortable having sex since
they are young. All the clothes that people wear in this World State have zippers on them. John,
Savage World citizen, goes into Leninas room. He goes through her suitcases and is confused
by the amount of clothes that have zippers on them. As Huxley writes, The zippers on Lenina's
spare pair of viscose velveteen shorts were at first a puzzle, then solved, a delight. Zip, and then
zip; zip, and then zip; he was enchanted (Huxley, p.124). This statement shows that the society
encourages people to have sex by designing the clothes with zippers. It allows the citizens to
have sex conveniently. Besides having sex, they also encourage people to take drugs.
Soma replaces religion in this society. It is introduced to everyone to help them get away
from pain and be ha. People in World State never have to face with any conflict. The government
wants everyone to be happy without any sadness. Whenever they feel down, they take soma. In
other words, theyre enslaved by it. It works as a religion in this society. Mustapha Mond talks to
John about how the World State is civilized by telling him that everything in this society is
perfect. People are well conditioned that nothing can go wrong. No one will ever do any odd
things. Even if anything goes wrong, soma is always there to calm them down and to get them
out of depression. They dont believe in Christianity, but instead in soma. Mustapha believes in
God but he states that God is absent in this World State. He tells John that Christianity
encourages self-denial that can cause instability which is not what everyone wants to see in this
society. Mustapha said,Christianity without tears -- thats what soma is (Huxley, p.210). He
believes that soma is a better form of Christianity because it only makes people happy without
any sadness. Taking soma is how people in the World State solve their problems. Therefore, no
one ever has to face with any tough time.

In Brave New World, Huxley chooses to represent the humanity lost in the world through
human producing technology, zippers, and soma. New ideas are not always the best. Being
determined by the class system when theyre born lessens their individuality. Having sex with
anyone as much as they want takes away their value in themselves. Also, taking soma weakens
their ability in life. All the new ideas that are introduced in this novel are what take away
citizens humanity in the world by devaluing them.
