GE3244: Final Exam General Feedback

AY2015-16, Semester 1

Section A was aimed at judging overall learning from various aspects of the module.
Section B was aimed at collective understanding and application of the knowledge gained from the
module.
1.

Section A:
a. More than 85% had answered more than 10 correct answers in this section
b. 20 persons scoring more than 30 (out of a max 40)
c. 4 persons scored more than 35
d. Surprisingly only one person did not attempt section A at all

2.

Section B:
a. Majority of you chose to answer Q 21 and Q 24
i. Q21 (Principles of stratigraphy) was answered well by most of you. The answers which
discussed on relative dating using the principles scored the better marks.
ii. For Q24 (Radioactive dating methods), most of you described the 3 methods to satisfaction.
Those who managed to explain the GAS effect with illustrations scored better marks.
b. Q22 was the next question that was attempted by 40 people.
i. Most of you did well in illustrating Dunhams classification. Some explained the rocks in this
classification as well.
ii. Some of you talked about carbonate depositional environments and factors influencing its
precipitation
iii. Many of you explained the physical constituents of carbonates (bioclasts, micrite, sparite etc)
iv. Those who included the above three were awarded high marks
c. Q23 and Q25 were the least attempted (about 24 persons attempted)
i. These questions required improved understanding from the module to answer it
ii. In Q23, it was expected that Plate tectonic settings for various sedimentary basins was
discussed in the light of the stratigraphy of the basin (thick sediments, changing depositional
environment etc). Few of you wrote excellent answers with great illustrations.
iii. In Q25, it was expected that the evolution of the petroleum system of Baram was discussed.
This would include the petroleum system components and their timing in the evolution of the
deltaic basin. Few good illustrations were observed in the answers
iv. Those who addressed the expectation supported with relevant illustrations were awarded
good marks.

In summary, the average performance of the students was good. All the answer scripts were clearly legible. Barring a
few students, majority were found to have put in great effort into the module leading to improved understanding. It
was be relevant to note that the one that obtained the highest in the final exam had all the answers in just 9 pages (no
additional sheets were used) which reflects that the subject need not be memory intensive and that good
understanding leads to better representation of your answers.
Keep up the good work.
