INTRODUCTION

Shipyard is the place where the ships are built or repair. It can be yachts, military vessels, cruise liners,
cargo or any others. Countries with large shipbuilding industries include South Korea, Australia, Japan,
China, Germany, Turkey, Poland and Croatia. The shipbuilding industry tends to be more fragmented in
Europe than in Asia.

In shipbuilding industry, it is about large steel fabrication, components, are formed into units and subassemblies, then connected together to larger block assemblies or modules before being finally
assembled into a complete ship. Shipyard layout are really important in this activity because of the
inventory of equipment and facilities must be made available to ensure that ships built or repaired are
adequately support and go through a smooth process all the way before final acceptance by customer.

The aim of this report was to research the two shipyard layout between UNIKL (Mimet) and others
modern shipyard industries which is Besiktas Shipyard for a better shipbuilding trainning ground, the
main criteria to improve was existing trainning ground in Mimet.

This report presents the four criteria for comparision between two shipyards. The criteria that should
have is the man power, facilities, equipment and layout .Mimets shipyard will be listing by the four
criteria to see the differential comparision.Otherwise,we will take one example modern shipyard
industries layout for comparison between Mimet to analyse an improvement that should be implement.

Ship Building
Before the first steel cutting in 2008 took place in Besiktas Shipyard, Besiktas Group has built 21
tankers as project manager and builder of these vessels coordinating all aspects of shipbuilding by
providing the design, equipment, workmanship and full contract responsibilities via using third party
facilities. Most of these high value and sophisticated vessels were handed over to owners and operators
worldwide such as Unitankers Denmark, Veritas Rederi Sweden, Sirius Rederi Sweden, Vaderotank
Sweden, Groupe Desgagnes Canada, Petromarine France, Socatra France, Prime Commercial
Management Sweden, Unifleet Netherlands. Having provided these services to these first class clients
and having the full awareness of the industry
standards due the culture received from the ship
management arm of the company enabled Besiktas
Shipyard being established on a solid ground and a
firm reference list.
The current facility where the Besiktas Shipyard is
placed has a ship building capacity of 7 ships per annum up to 30,000 dwt.
After having built the first 4 tankers of 4100 dwt to Besiktas fleet, Besiktas Shipyard mainly has
concentrated to special purpose vessels with tailor made solutions in order to diversify the ship building
portfolio and act in line with the general strategy to supply value added ships to its clients.
7

Gas Market
The first attempt was to enter into the gas market. The contracts received from Gas and Heat of Italy
enabled the yard to explore this rather sophisticated and complex arm of shipbuilding. The 3 vessels
handed to Gas and Heat until the end of 2012 will be followed by the 4th unit which is to be delivered in
4th QTR 2013. After this start and good cooperation with Gas and Heat, the yard further proceeded to a
more complex field in gas segment and the contract of a 9000 cbm Ethylene Carrier is signed. This two
propelled vessel will be delivered to Galata Shipping in the beginning of 3rd QTR 2013.

Caspian Market
The yard has managed to get a firm contract for building a series of sea river type tankers from the
biggest river oil transportation company of the Volga Don Channel. Until beginning of 2013, the yard
has handed over 6 x 7100 dwt sea river type vessels to Palmali Shipping. The yard plans to deliver the
7th unit within the 4th QTR 2013.
Having a good reference in the Caspian market due this top of the line sea river vessels delivered to
Palmali and managing to serve also SOCAR of Azerbaijan by delivering some small support boats,
Besiktas Shipyard was granted to build a Platform Construction Barge on Palmali account with energy
giant Lukoil being the end user. This 140 X 60 meter and 7000 tons steel weight barge is delivered in
the 4th QTR 2012 with an impressive performance lasted only 4 months after steel cutting.

Offshore / Fishing
Off shore and fishing markets were also among the concentrated segments. The yard was granted with 3
important contracts in 2012. Besiktas first has signed contracts of 2 x TSVs and 1 x MPSV with
8

PALMALI with 2014 deliveries. These vessels are intended to be used for serving the oil major and
energy conglomerate LUKOIL in their operations in Caspian Sea Filanovsky field and both types of 80
meter vessels have multipurpose service capabilities in operations under high ice class conditions, DP2,
shallow draft, carrying of various cargoes, rescue, and standby and oil recovery functions.
At the same period, Besiktas has managed to receive orders from two different owners of North Europe.
YTTERSTAD fishing company, located in the northern part of Norway, decided to acquire their new
flagship from Besiktas Shipyard. The 75 meter long vessel which is to be delivered in 2014 has the
main purpose of pelagic fishing utilizing purse seine and pelagic trawl.
The other contract signed was with THOR of Faroe Islands, a company operating various type and size
of vessels among which some are serving the seismic research giant Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS).
The contract contains 4 units of 65 meter Seismic Support Vessels with four options and deliveries
starting 3rd QTR 2014.

2 UNIKL MIMET Slipways
This is the structure on which the ship travels into
the water. The sliding way in the shipyard is made
from steel, with the bottom edge of the sliding way
and the top edge of the ground ways are clad in a
slippery surface. The slipway provides for an
inclined building berth and a launch way that may
facilitate end launching operations. The maximum
weight capacity allowable for the slipway is 250
tonnes.

FIGURE 3 Hydrolic Folding Machine

This type of folding machine can take over the
function of a press as well as a bending machine.
There is no profile that the folding machine in
comparison to the press could not bend. Instead,
there are profiles that can be bent very well with the
bending machine, but not with a press. The beam is
capable of working as a press, that means that the
upper beam is able to compress bended sheets,
allowing the folding of metal sheets.

FIGURE 4 Semi Automatic Cutting Mechine

Any producer with different sawing jobs to perform
will achieve perfect and cost-effective results with
these semi-automatic bandsaw. The machine is the
optimum solution for economical processing of low
piece numbers and one-off cuts. Also, the machine
provides optimum accessibility ensures extreme
handling simplicity directly at the machines.

FIGURE 5 Drill Machine

A drilling machine is used to cut holes into or
through metal, wood, or other materials. Drilling
machines use a drilling tool that has cutting edges
at its point. This cutting tool is held in the drill
press by a chuck or Morse taper and is rotated and
fed into the work at variable speeds. Drilling
machines may be used to perform other
operations. They can perform countersinking,
boring, counterboring, spot facing, reaming, and
tapping

FIGURE 6 Welding Machine

It is a device that provides an electric current to
perform welding processes. Low current can also
be used; welding two razor blades together at 5
amps with gas tungsten arc welding is a good
example. A welding power supply can be as simple
as a car battery and as sophisticated as a highfrequency inverter, with computer control to assist
29

in the welding process.

FIGURE 7 Manual Swaging Tools

This tool is designed to form various shapes to sheet
material and is particularly suited for tubular ductwork
applications. Easily interchangeable rolls are included
as standard equipment to form the specific shape
required.

FIGURE 8 Swing Beam Guilloting Shear max Cutting 20mm

This type of shearing machine is a device that separate metal
sheets into parts. In accordance with shear design, it can be
subdivided into guillotine and swing beam. A guillotine shear
has a moving blade which is almost parallel to the fixed one
during the whole stroke. It requires a gibbing system to keep
the blade beam in proper position when shearing metal sheet.
In contrast to guillotine shear, swing beam shear eliminates
gibs which is designed for proper position. Its blade pivots
around a fixed point instead of vertical movement.

both workshops provides 16-20 stations for welding
activities and are equipped with a welding machine at
each station.

10.0 THE MAN POWER IN UNIKL MIMET

31

The workers are not well organized various departments or sections as LSE shipyard did, which every
different department responsibles for each aspect of the operation of the shipyard. There is no specific
department set up to organize the activity and operation of the shipyard. Also, the shipyard is lack of
trade skills such joiners, painters, laborers and loftsman etc. A typical modern shipyard would consist of
the following key departments:

Administration
Production
Engineering
Purchasing
Quality assurance
Project management

11.0 THE COMPARISON BETWEEN SHIPYARD

Layout
32

The layout side between Besiktas Shipyard and UNIKL MIMET have far diffrences the UNIKL MIMET
is more smaller. The unikl need to improve the size and build a workshop flow for build or repair a ship
such as the L shape shipyard layout. To be economically viable, the development of a new shipyard
requires the fulfilment of five basic requirements:
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)

Existence of potential customers,

Availability of skilled workforce,
Financial funding,
Selection of a suitable product mix
Implementation of an efficient production process

In UNIKL MIMET there is no proper stockyard within the shipyard . It is needed to be set up at the most
rear and closest to the material entrance for smooth material handling and transportation. The fabrication
workshop is located quite far from the design and drafting office and it is supposed to be located nearby
to each other in order to ensure smooth transferring process of all documents, drawing and information
to the production floor. There is no administration office in the shipyard which functions to allow
effective monitoring and control process. It is also need to be located nearby the production workshops.
The area between fabrication workshop and the other workshops should be clear form any hindrance for
easy and safe transport of components and fabricated materials. The shipyard does not have an adequate
buffer areas that are arranged according to production process in between workshops.
Material Storage
The Besiktas Shipyard bigger stockyard then the more systematic system that make the material more
easy to store and to find compare to UNIKL MIMET stockyard. The Besiktas Shipyard has computer
storage data for the material. Then it develops safer and more efficient to access.

Access
The Besiktas Shipyard has easily road acces facilities to enter the yard and for big vehicle such as big
crane or container truck do not have problem. But for UNIKL MIMET the road acces is limited space
just for a small vehichle can enter the road. In UNIKL MIMET, the crane or container truck must follow
33

the road at the behind hostel which causes the road damaged and caused widespread dust which it is not
good for student healthy.
Machineries and Equipment
For Besiktas Shipyard their have complete machinery and equipment for build and repair the ship. But
UNIKL MIMET just have from Besiktas Shipyard so a lot of equipment should be improve. There
are a lot of machine that can be improved at UNIKL MIMET if wanna to attract more trader of ship
repair or shipbuilding. The equipments provided in UNIKL MIMETs shipyard were only suitable for
the learning and teaching purposes only which focussing on small boat building and repair. To be as
prestigous as any other shipyard in the industry.
The Man Power
Besiktas shipyard workers are well organized within several departments or sections that are responsible
for each aspect of the operation of the shipyard. The subdivision of the shipyard is consisting of
administration, production, engineering, purchasing, quality assurance and project management
department. However, in UNIKL MIMETs shipyard, there is no specific department set up to organize
the activity and operation of the shipyard.
Facilities
There are lots of facilities in the UNIKL MIMETs shipyard such the design and drafting office,
workshops, slipways and welding bay etc. The facilities existed in the shipyard were only suitable for
the trainning and teaching ground only, but not to be as prestigous as any other shipyard in the industry.
The shipyard itself should be equipped with a lot more facilities not only for the trainning ground, but to
compete with anothers. As for Besiktas Shipyard, the facilities in the shipyard are equipped with more
advanced equipments and technologies to support the construction activities in the shipyard mainly for
their core activities; shipbuilding and ship repairs.
12.0 CONCLUSION

As a conclusion, there is a lot will be changes if after UNIKL MIMET ready to go through the
improvement process regarding the Besiktas Shipyard. After the improvement, UNIKL MIMET surely
34

will boost up the criteria and specification of the shipyard. With the combination of innovation and
technology such as Besiktas Shipyard, it will help to develop a better shipyard for UNIKL MIMET ..
UNIKL MIMET should cooperate with others company to improved our facilities and shipyard. There
are a lots of improvement to be done by UNIKL MIMET if want to compete with the others modern
shipyard. UNIKL MIMETs Shipyard is specialized for the learning and teaching purpose only. The
MIMETs shipyard has it own potential to grow, however need to overcome many issues and challenges.

35

13.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
There a lot of improvement to be done to UNIKL MIMET shipyard for develop a complete shipyard.
First about the layout must be more bigger and have the complete flow for build or repair a ship. Then
for the material storage there must have a sytematic recorded data for storage, for example UNIKL
MIMET must have computer software for recorded the material data. This will make easy to store or to
find a materials. For the road acces UNIKL MIMET must develop more bigger road for the material
loading from big vihicle for the land vehicle. Lastly the equipment and facalities UNIKL MIMET are
leave far behind from Besiktas Shipyard, so a lot of thing need to add on such crane, more technology
equipment according marine industry nowdays.

There are improvement plans that we can take from this research on existing MIMETs shipyard would
be as follows;
1. The shipyard is supposed to have a flexible layout to accommodate technology changes and future
marketing demands.
2. Also, an administration office is needed to be located within the shipyard which functions to allow in
monitoring and control process and it should be located nearby the fabrication workshops.
3. Set up a stockyard at the most rear and closest to the material entrance in order to reduce travel time
of plates coming in and to be nearer to main yard.
4. The shipyard should have adequate buffer area. It is an empty space to accomodate any components
or units that have to wait (may be due the delay or miss-planning before the following task need to be
carried out, and the buffer area are normally located near the stockyard, fabrication workshop, assembly
workshop and surrounding the building berths
5. Have a long term plan in order to develop a bigger business and operation of the
shipyard.
6. Increase the number of skilled workers and upgrade the technical skills of the workers
for each aspect of the operation of the shipyard.
