I would first want to gauge the conviction in his claims by assessing what

words/expressions he uses while conveying this threat. It is highly likely that such
a threat would come out of the blue and would contain quite a few fallacies and
factual incoherence (such as no. of such 1 st year students, nature of cheating
etc) Since it would be my job to act in the best interest of IIMA, I would exercise
full denial of any precise awareness of such information and would politely request
the reporter about the source of his knowledge, so that I can verify with appropriate
authorities. If the reporter still maintains an aggressive stance, then it would be
necessary to delay his decision making by offering to meet personally over this.
This, in order to understand the motivation behind chasing such a story. In the
meanwhile I can also consult with officials and team members, conveying this
threat and discussing possible solutions to mild down the report as much as
possible, in case talks with the reporter fail. Finally, while talking to the reporter
personally over this issue, it would be necessary to make him realize that IIMA is an
institution lakhs of students look up to and any gossip-able report of such nature
can easily snowball into a hyped media spectacle and somehow without hurting his
ego take the conversation towards constructive journalism.
