Similar to the Noon Saakinah, the Meem Saakinah also has rules attached to it when read
in the Quran Al Kareem. There are three rules associated to the Meem Saakinah
depending on the ‫ما بعد‬.

Rule 1: ‫( اخفاء شفوي‬Hiding of the lips)

If the letter ‫ ب‬appears after a Meem Saakinah hiding of the join occurs causing:
a) the sound to emanate from the upper cavity of the mouth although
b) The majority of the sound emanates from the nose producing a Ghunna for the
length of one harakah
c) The lips must not close hence the emphasis on this being ‫شفوي‬

For example:
‫هم با رزون‬

Rule 2: ‫ ادغام شفوي‬/‫ادغام متماثل‬

If the letter ‫ م‬appears after a Meem Saakinah an extended ghunna occurs taking into
account the existence of two ‫م‬.

For example:
‫لكم ما كسبتم‬

Rule 3: ‫اظهار شفوي‬

For all of the remaining letters of the alphabet the occurrence of Meem Saakinah should
produce a clear Meem sound without concealment or merging.

For example:
‫لم يكن‬

‫لعلكم تعقلون‬

NB: Emphasised Apparency ( ‫ )اشد اظهار‬occurs when the letters ‫ ف‬and ‫ و‬appear after a
Meem Saakinah with emphasis on the ‫م‬. An example of this occurs on the ‫عليهم واللضالين‬.
