INTRODUCTION:
To determine Gabapentin through charge transfer complexes with
sigma and pie acceptors and also with dye stuffs using
spectrophotometer.
GBP resembles GABA structurally but it is not completely similar
to gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). It is a neuropathic pain
relieving drug which slow down the release of other
neurotransmitters by participating in voltage-gated N-type
calcium ion channels which actually causes less amount of
calcium to reach the nerve terminals. Charge transfer complex is
formed when electronic charge is transferred from donor having
high ionization potential to acceptor having high electron affinity
and the complexes formed are colored and stable.
GBP is determined using spectrophotometer because this
technique does not require much analysis and it is less time
consuming. Besides spectrophotometry it can also be determined
by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas liquid
chromatography (GLC), electrophoresis ect. Ion-pair complexes of
GBP are formed with ninhydrin (NIN), 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4benzoquinone (DDQ), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), picric acid (PA)
and methanol is used as a solvent.

PROCEDURE:
Pure GBP is obtained from any pharmaceutical company and
other reagents like NIN, DDQ, TCNE and PA are also obtained.
Electronic spectral is recorded in the range 200nm-800nm and
quartz cell is used. Serial volume of drug solution was transferred
into the volumetric flask and then 1 ml of different reagents (NIN,
DDQ, TCNE, PA, MO) are added to the solution. Then the solution
is brought to the mark using methanol as the solvent which is

economically cheap. Each reagent was left for some time for the
complete reaction and formation of complex.

RESULT:
The complexes formed with NIN, DDQ, TCNE, PA and MO showed
Ruhemann purple red, bluish green, red and dark yellow
coloration with maximum wavelength of 315, 340, 580, 464 and
342nm respectively and it was also found that GBP occurs on
equimolar basis (1:1) with all complexing agents via jobs plot
method. Spectral characteristics including oscillators strength,
dipole moment, ionization potential, energy of complexes,
resonance energy, association constant and Gibbs free energy
changes have also been determined through spectrophotometry
using different mathematical formulas involving wavelength and
absorbance.

CONCLUSION:
This method to determine GBP is valid because it gives linear
curves indicating beer lamberts law is applicable and correlation
coefficient which is greater than 0.998 confirms the best linearity
of the curve.
