Moral Story: Evening dinner with a father.

Read this short story and answer the questions below. Remember, there are no correct or incorrect answers. Write
your opinion and ask your teacher to check it.
A son invited his old father to a restaurant for an evening dinner. Father was very old and weak, and when eating,
dropped food on his shirt and pants. Other people watched him in disgust while his son was calm.
After father finished his food, his son who was a little embarrassed, quietly took him to the bathroom, wiped the food
particles, removed the stains and combed his hair. When they came out, the entire restaurant was watching them in
silence, criticizing how someone could embarrass themselves publicly like that. The son felt very bad, but he paid the bill
and started walking out with his father.
At that moment, an old man amongst the diners called out to the son and asked him, Dont you think you left something
behind?
The son replied, No sir, I didnt
The old man said, Yes, you did! You left a lesson for every son and hope for every father.
The restaurant went silent.

Moral story: Learn and earn

Read this short story and answer the questions below. Remember there are no correct or incorrect answers. Write
your opinion and ask the teacher to check it.
Pablo and Andres started working at a retail company together just after graduation. They worked very hard.
After several years, the boss promoted Pablo to sales executive but Andres remained a sales representative. One day
Andres could not accept it anymore, and complained the boss did not value hard working staff, but only promoted
those who flattered him.
The boss knew that Andres worked very hard for the years, but in order to help Andres realize the difference between
him and Pablo, the boss asked Andres to do the following. Go and find out anyone selling water melon in the market
Andres returned and said yes. The boss asked how much per kg? Andres went back to the market to ask and
returned to inform boss the $12 per kg.
Boss told Andres I will ask Pablo the same question. Pablo went, returned and said boss, only one person selling
water melon. $12 per kg, $100 for 10 kg. He has inventory of 340 melons. On the table 58 melons, every melon
weighs about 15 kg, bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality.
Andres was very impressed and realized the difference between himself and Pablo. He decided not to resign but to
learn from Pablo.
My dear friends, a more successful person is more observant and think more. For the same matter, a more successful
person sees several years ahead, while you see only tomorrow. The difference between a year and a day is 365
times, how could you win?

Moral story: Value and invest in yourself

Read this short story and answer the questions below. Remember there are no correct or incorrect answers. Write
your opinion and ask the teacher to check it.
Mr. Warren Buffet (1951present) is the most successful investor in the world. His investment strategies are legendary
and many people seek to learn from him.
Mr. Buffet often travels to universities to give speeches to educate and motivate students. Here is one of his speeches
to teach us the value of our body, to invest in ourselves, in education for a great future.
Imagine that a Genie offers you any car in the world. The condition is that it is the only car you will ever own. What
would you do?
You would read the manual ten times, change the oil twice as often as required, and you would take fastidious care so
that the car remained the car of your dreams forever.
Think about what this tells you about your body.
You get only one mind and one bodythe same ones you will have at 20, 40, or 60 years old.
Take care of them and maximize their potential. It will be too late to take care of your body and mind (and car) later on.
You can maintain them, but it is hard or impossible to undo big mistakes or negligence later on. You do not want to end
up with a wreck on your hands.
Your main asset in life is yourself.
Treat yourself as a valuable asset. If you value yourself, and invest in yourself, you will be worth a great deal throughout
your lifetime, both to yourself and to your community.
Taken and adapted from www.academictips.org

Moral Story: Testing for gossip

Read this short story and answer the questions below. Remember there are no correct or incorrect answers. Write
your opinion and ask the teacher to check it.
In ancient Greece, Socrates had a reputation of considering knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaintance met
the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?"
"Hold on a minute", Socrates replied. "Before telling me anything I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter
Test."
"Triple filter?"
"That's right", Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and
filter what you're going to say. That's why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is Truth. Are you absolutely sure that
what you are about to tell me is true?"
"No" the man said, "Actually I just heard about it and ..."
"All right", said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter
of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"
"No, on the contrary."
"So", Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true. You may still
pass the test though, because there's one filter left: the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend
going to be useful to me?"
"No, not really."
"Well", concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?"

Moral story: The obstacle in our path

Read this short story and answer the questions below. Remember there are no correct or incorrect answers. Write
your opinion and ask the teacher to check it.
In ancient times, a King had a gigantic rock placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone
would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked
around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone
out of the way.
Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his
burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded.
After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been.
The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who
removed the rock from the roadway.
The peasant learned what many of us never understand! Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our
condition.

My name is Javier. Last January was great. I went backpacking

through the beautiful Chilo island with my two best friends,
123
Leonardo and Claudio. At first it was hard to get a truck to give
us a ride, because we had to wait one hour or more, but then
everything changed and we met Felipe, the truck driver who
took us to Chilo. When we got to the island it was dark but we
found a nice hostel to spend the night. The people were very
nice and our room was comfortable and clean. The next day we got up very late and had breakfast at 1:00 PM!
We did many things during our week there. We bought lots of souvenirs and shopped at the markets. We also
went to many local festivals and ate delicious curanto and drank chicha. My favorite moments were when we went
sightseeing because I could take a lot of wonderful pictures and Leonardo won a
cueca contest at the Achao festival. It was a lot of fun. The only problems during
the trip was that Claudio lost his wallet I was sick for one day because I ate too
much. Leaving the bad things aside, this trip was the best ever.

Moral story: The frogs and the tower

Read the short story and answer the questions below. Remember there are no correct or incorrect answers. Write
your opinion and ask the teacher to check it.
There once was a bunch of tiny frogs who arranged a running competition. The goal was to reach the top of a very
high tower. A big crowd gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer on the contestants. And the race began.
Honestly, no-one in crowd really believed that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower. You heard statements
such as:
"Oh, way too difficult!!"
"They will never make it to the top".
"Not a chance that they will succeed. The tower is too high!"
The tiny frogs began collapsing. One by one... Except for those who in a fresh tempo were climbing higher and
higher. The crowd continued to yell:
"It is too difficult!!! No one will make it!"
More tiny frogs got tired and gave up... But ONE continued higher and higher and higher. This one wouldn't give up!
At the end, everyone else had given up climbing the tower. Except for the one tiny frog who, after a big effort, was the
only one who reached the top! Then all of the other tiny frogs naturally wanted to know how this one frog managed to
do it. A contestant asked the tiny frog how the one who succeeded had found the strength to reach the goal.
It turned out...
That the winner was deaf.

Moral story: One doctor became the greatest

Read this short story and answer the questions below. Remember there are no correct or incorrect answers. Write
your opinion and ask the teacher to check it.
One doctor became the greatest surgeon in the country and became the president of the National society of
surgeons. For this reason, a celebration in his honor was held. But he was sad.
His friend came up to him and said:
You achieved something that others cant even dream about you became the greatest surgeon. Why are you so
sad?
The thing is that I achieved something that I didnt even wanted, the surgeon said, I never wanted to be a
surgeon and now I cant escape from it. If I would suffer a failure then maybe I would have a chance to do something
that I really love. And now I am chained to a thing that I dont even like.
You must be joking? The friend exclaimed, the biggest honor for a surgeon is to become the president of a
National society. Your wife is happy, your children are happy. Everyone has the highest respect for you!
But I dont respect myself thats what is wrong. I wanted to be a dancer, but my parents were against it, and Ive
listened to them. I was weak. I became a great surgeon, but I am very mediocre in the field that I wanted to dedicate
my life to. That is why I am unhappy now.

Hi, Im Benjamin. My sister Nadia and I are very excited

because were going to travel to Iquique in January and stay
with our aunt Jessica and uncle Paulo, who live there since

were going to leave Santiago next week early in the morning.

Moral story: A walk in the park

Read this short story and answer the questions below. Remember there are no correct or incorrect answers. Write
your opinion and ask the teacher to check it.
Late in the evening I was walking in the park. Suddenly I heard scream coming from behind bushes. I stopped
to listen and understood that a woman was attacked. I heard sounds of fighting and muttering. For several
moments I was hesitating, should I get involved?
I panicked. I was frightened for my own safety. Maybe it is better to call the police? Then I realized that a
womans voice becomes weaker, so I knew I have to act quickly. Can I run away from this? Finally I decided
that I have to help this unknown woman even if I am risking my own life. I felt some strange transformation
inside, the moral and physical strength, so I ran behind the bushes. I pulled the attacker off the girl. We fell to
the ground and fought for several minutes. Then the assailant jumped up and ran away.

Breathing hard I slowly came up to the girl, who was trembling behind a tree. It was dark, so I could not see
her face clearly. I felt that she is very frightened, so I talked to her from a distance: You are safe now, its ok,
the man run away. After a few moments I heard her words with a great incredulity in her voice: Dad, is that
you? And then I realized that the girl was my daughter.
