EDUCATIONAL
TECHNOLOGY

Educational

Technology is the
systematic application of scientific
knowledge to teaching, learning
and conditions of learning to
improve the efficiency of teaching
and training.
G.O.M Leith

Educational

Technology can be
understood as meaning of the
development of a set of systematic
technique,
and
accompanying
practical knowledge for designing
testing and operating school as
educational systems.

ROBERT M GAGNAE

Indian educationalist
S.S Kulkarni

Educational Technology may be defined

as the application of the laws as well as
recent discoveries of science and
technology to the process of education.

E T as the Fourth Revolution in Education

Eric Ashby calls present technological development as Fourth Revolution in
Education
Oral teaching, invention of writing, invention of printing are first, second and
third revolutions respectively
Fourth revolution include-development in electronics, the radio, tape
recorder, television, etc.

Objectives of Educational technology

To identify educational needs and aspirations of community.

To determine the aims of education
To develop a suitable curriculum with interaction of science, art, and
human values.
To develop certain models leading to improvement of the process of
teaching and learning.
To develop the appropriate aids and equipment to meet the educational
purpose.
To help in extending educational opportunities to the masses especially
the neglected section of the community.
To manage the whole educational system covering Planning,
implementation and the evaluation phases.

Advantage of Educational technology

Individualised instruction
Improvement in the quality of
teaching
Meeting the problem of mass
education
Equalising educational opportunity
Providing continuing education

TECHNOLOGY OF EDUCATION VS
TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

Technology in Education

The term Technology in Education

refers to the use of technological
advancement such as various
equipment, material and machines
for educational purpose
It involves audio visual equipment,
hardware
and
sophisticated
electronic devices like projectors,
films, radio, television , tape
recorder, teaching machines, teletext and computer aided instruction
for
individualised
and
group
learning.

Technology of Education

Technology of education is the

incorporation of IT into the realm
of classroom.

The technology of education or

educational technology cannot
limit itself to the role of service as
confined in the case of
technology in education. The
term, technology of education,
does not represent something
added or helped from outside as
in the case of technology in
education. But it signifies a
system
or
technological
approach to the problems of
education.

Technology in Education
Technology in Education
is thus a service concept
like technology in the
service of farming or
agriculture or science in
the service of mankind

Technology OF Education
The

technology of education
cannot be viewed as a synonym to
A/V aids and other different
equipment. The technology of
education must mean itself as
system for bringing improvement
in the total process of teachinglearning by carefully analysing its
problems and reorganizing all
available resources in an
economic way for obtaining the
optimum results.

Hardware approach
&
Software approach

Hardware approach

Hardware Approach has physical

science and applied
engineering as its basis.

Hardware approach in education is

the view of Finn and his colleagues.

Hardware Approach has

mechanised the whole teachinglearning process.

Software approach

In software approach, the basis of

all thinking and working is
behavioural science and
psychology of learning ,that is its
origin is in Behavioural Sciences
and the applied aspects of
Psychology of learning.

This approach to educational

technology originated from the
efforts of B.F.Skinner, Gagne and
Norman.A.Crowder.

Software approach uses the

principles of psychology for the
purpose of behaviour modification.

Software approach

Hardware approach
Hardware

Approach adopts
a Product-oriented
Approach.

It is a Process-oriented Approach. It utilizes the

knowledge of the Psychology of Learning to
produce learning material, teaching learning
strategies, etc. for the betterment of the
process of teaching-learning.

Hardware

Software approach has no such wide

application.

It improved the efficiency of both teachers

and learners .However it lags behind in the
task of reducing the cost of education.

technology has
the potential to hand over
the educational benefits to
the mass with greater ease
and economy.

It

improved the efficiency of

both teachers and learners
and reducing the cost of
education.

Hardware approch

Hardware technology need the

service of software technology for its
use and functioning.

An example of appliances and

gadgets used in hardware
technology include-radio, television,
taperecorder, video, slides and filim
projectors, teaching machines and
computer.

Software approch

Software technology does not require any

aid form the hardware technology for its
delivery. It becomes more useful and
productive when assisted by the
Hardware Technology.

It includes teaching strategies, learning

material, evaluation tools, teaching
models, programmed instruction,
teaching- learning strategy on
psychology of learning etc.

A System ,Definition
A set of things working together as parts
of a mechanism or an interconnecting
network; a complex whole.

System Approach

A system is a set of inter-connected and inter-related elements

directed to achieve certain goals.

It consists mainly of three aspects-input, process and output.

The input to a given teaching/learning system consists of people,

resources and information.

The output consists of people whose performance or ideas have

improved in desired way

Process consists of sequence of interdependent and

linked procedures which, convert inputs into outputs..

System Approach

This is the modern approach.

It acts as a link between hardware and software

approach.

It is also known as 'Management Technology'.

It has brought to educational management a scientific

approach for solving educational administrative
problems.

Systems Approach to education emphasizes

Identifying and stating the goals to be achieved.

Identifying the processes, methods, techniques and

strategies that may be most relevant to achieving the
predetermined goals;

Building up theoretical foundation justifying the relevance of

these processes to achieving the goals;

Determining specific interactions visualized existing among

various other components of inputs;

Specifying the various kinds of controls needed in the total

system at different points; and

Keeping the whole in mind all the time while preparing the
model or the system.
