REPORT OF POST HARVEST PRACTICES

FOLLOWED IN VEGETABLE AND FRUIT
MARKET OF HISAR
Present study was done in fruit and vegetable market of Hisar, Haryana. It was
done early in morning to see transportation mode followed, loading and
unloading of fruits and vegetables, various packaging material used, and to see
various post harvest practices that they follow.
Transportation mode
For domestic transportation the use of road vehicles offers substantial
advantages of convenience, availability and reasonable cost of transport.
Open trucks were the commonest type of road transport. Fitted with frames to
ease stacking and covering. Natural ventilation helped to prevent overheating of
produce over relatively short journeys.
Autorickshaw, tempos also were used for transportation of fruits and
vegetables. Vegetables like potato and onion were mostly transported in trucks
in gunny bags and meshy bag respectively.

Bulk transport of commdities in truck, auto etc.

The method of storage of the produce in the transport vehicle depend on the
pack, the commodity and the type and size of the vehicle.

Unloading of vegetable produce: Its a very delicate operation. It was done

manually. Vegetables were stacked on pallet and then was taken out. Finally kept
either in store house or on floor to sell. Loading and unloading of produce must be
done with care. Packed produce must not be thrown from any vehicle.

Unloading process followed by person

After loading and unloading commodities are weighed in bulk,to see the weight
of individual bag having vegetable by weighing machine and then commodities
are taken out for retail selling.

Onion and potatoes after unloading are kept itself in packaging material
as they are received in bulk and are not sold on the same day. They are in
gunny bags and mesh bags.
Packaging material

To protect the produce against rough handling during loading and unloading

and transport
To contain the produce as an efficient unit that is easy to handle and that can

be marketed as a unit
To market the produce as the package will improve its presentation to the

buyer and provide a standard package that will lead to efficiency in the market
place
However, the type of packaging used can account for 15 to 20 percent of post harvest
loss in fresh produced.

RETAILING OF VEGETABLES:

RETAILING PRACTICES IN MANDI

SUGGESTIONS:
1. Transportation of vegetables:
The best loading factor must be achieved, that is the maximum
load that can be carried economically under satisfactory technical
conditions: a stable and well-ventilated load.
The size and design of packages should have contents with the
minimum of wasted space, and the packages should be strong
enough to protect the contents.
2. Loading and unloading
Loading and unloading: loading and unloading of vehicles should be
properly supervised to prevent careless handling of packages; loading
aids such as trolleys, roller conveyors, pallet or forklift trucks should be
used where possible to reduce the handling of individual packages.
3. Storage

Fresh fruits and vegetables spoil quickly at room temperature, therefore the

need to sell them as soon as they are reaped.

They can be stored for longer periods under cold storage conditions but that is
expensive.

4. Packaging:

Ventilated plastic crates to transport large volumes of vegetables. The

disadvantages in using polypropylene bags to transport the product
resulted in crushing due to the large amount placed in the bag.The
temperature and humidity in the bags increase and so the product begins
to spoil

Make sure that the containers and the storage rooms are clean to
prevent contamination and spoilage of the produce.
Store produce such that inspection can occur from time to time to
remove spoilt items or produce for sale.
5. Cleanliness
Floor of the retailing market is not clean which can contaminate the
commodities lying nearby for selling. Therefore, cleanliness should
be maintained.
Cows were roaming freely and created mess by both with their
dung and by spreading trash in the mandi. So municipal cooperation
should be involved for cleaning of mandi as well as removal of
animals.
