Introduction
No more than 150 words. Set out the major economic and social shifts that have taken place
in China since 1978. Focus on the change from an agricultural-based economy to a
manufacturing powerhouse. Include a brief statement about the strategies China has used,
and the impact of globalisation on the country.

How has China encouraged globalisation? (Strategies)

Discuss the strategies China has used to promote economic growth and development. You
can use headings if that helps. For each of the points below, discuss HOW China
implemented the strategies below.

1. Economic reform
The way China changed its economic structure (from agriculture to manufacturing),
and has encouraged private enterprise.
2. Greater international trade
The way China shifted from a predominantly closed economy to one that is the major
player in terms of international trade (the key is the Open Door policy).
3. Encouraging foreign investment
China has shifted from a country that was relatively closed towards foreign
investment to the number one destination for FDI.
4. Infrastructure development
China has been very strategic about creating new infrastructure to grow its economy.
Look in particular at the railways, highways and factories.

Discuss the impacts that greater integration with the global economy has affected China.

because of globalisation.

1. Economic growth and development
How has Chinas economic growth changed from pre-globalisation (before 1978), to
after the Open Door policy and to today?
How has Chinas economic development changed over these time frames? For
economic development, think about reduction in poverty, changes in the HDI, life
expectancy, literacy, infant mortality?

2. The nature of Chinas economy

As China has changed from a planned to market economy, and opened up to the
global economy, the Chinese economy has CHANGED. How has this change
affected China, in terms of domestic production, trade and foreign investment levels?
3. International trade
With globalisation, China has embraced international trade which has affected its
exports, trading partners and TNCs.
4. Distribution of income
With globalisation, not all of Chinas citizens have benefitted equally. Look at how
income equality has changed or not as China has welcomed globalisation.
5. Environmental impacts
Chinas embrace of globalisation, and its economic growth and development, have
had serious impacts on the environment. Discuss them here.
