FrontDesk / May-June 2014

It is my pleasure to welcome
you to Washington, DC.

The nations capital is one of the greatest cities in the

worldand Im not just saying that because Ive called it home
for 20-plus years. Washington, DC, or The District as locals call
it, offers the best of both worlds: Its simultaneously a global
center of power while boasting friendly, intimate neighborhoods;
its home to some of the highest profile museums in the world,
while also supporting a strong local arts community; and while
theres no shortage of celebrity chefs setting up shop here, youll
also find dozens of homegrown, delicious restaurants.
Thats the DC I know and love. And its the DC youll
find in the pages of this issue of FrontDesk. In Distinguished
Destinations, for example, youll find great recommendations
from locals on which iconic monuments to visit. Turn the page,
and The Chews Carla Hall shares her insider tips for the DC that
you may not know. The FrontDesk team works hard to showcase
the citys diversity, which ranges from our famous marble
memorials to the unique boutiques, restaurants and attractions
that can only be found inside the Beltway.
FrontDesk is a great resource, but, as always, I want to
recommend a conversation with your hotels concierge. DCs
concierges are truly the best, and I encourage you to turn to
them when planning your perfect itinerary.
Whether youre here for the first time or youre a regular,
were so glad to share our city with you.
Welcome to Washington, DC!

If 60-day dry-aged USDA

prime is the Cadillac of beef,
then Japanese A5 wagyu is
the Lamborghini: the ultimate
dining experience for the
committed carnivore. We
called upon two of DCs
leading steakhouses to come
up with the ultimate pairings
for the truly discerning.
Bourbon Steak and BLT

Steaks A5 wagyu comes

from the Miyazaki prefecture,
whose beef is considered
among the worlds finest. The
A (highest), B or C ratings
pertain to the proportion
of meat that comes from
between the sixth and
seventh rib, which is closer
to the shoulder, fattier and
more flavorful. The number
grade of 1 through 5 (highest)
is awarded for quality in four
categories: marbling and

up-and-coming performance artist Chukwumaa

Ask DC-based artist Chukwumaa (one name only) what he does for a
living, and hell say, Im basically a superagent. The dapper 23-yearold is becoming one of the citys most buzzed-about performance
artists, presenting work at DCs most prestigious venues. He was
recently tapped by Howard University for its 25th annual James A.
Porter Colloquium, a leading symposium of artists and curators that
explores African-American art. Through August, hes also an artist-inresidence at the Strathmore, where he plans to present experimental
sound design with fellow artists E. Jane and Joshua Davis. This spring,
Chukwumaa participates in Wait (May 17-June 7), a group show at
Project 4 Gallery that will present new-media installations through
sound, sculpture and performance. Theres a sense of both heaviness

and openness to Chukwumaas work, says Violet Morris, the

gallerys director. These elements make him so compelling to watch.
Born in Nigeria, Chukwumaa was raised in the DC suburbs. Art
was what I did when no one was telling me what to do, he says.
As a student at the University of Maryland, Chukwumaa found a
mentor, Jefferson Pinder, who guided him into performance art. In
his piece Thee Urban(e) last summer, Chukwumaa ripped pages
from academic textbooks and hung them around the Transformer.
For Metro Sketch (Thank You, Come Again), he covered himself in
subway receipts and rode the Red Line from one end to the other.
Hes also performed as part of Supernova and an invite-only reception
for the exhibition American Cool at the National Portrait Gallery.
Often, Chukwumaas work is interpreted as a critique of race or
class. This interpretation is almost a consequence of being black and
making art, he says. I cant make things that are universal. Im often
talking about how things happen to people because they are part of a
certain group. One of my favorite artists, David Hammons, once said,
Nothing fits, but everything works. Thats kind of how my life is.

The Rockville, Md. native currently

divides his time between Thievery
Corporation, the wildly popular,
genre-bending music collective,
and his growing nightlife empire
along U Street.
The balance between his two
worlds has been challenging of late.
Within two weeks over the winter,
Hilton helped open two new
conceptsthe Mexican craft beer
and cocktail haven El Rey; and the
casual, Asian-influenced bar called
Den of Thieves (where he often
DJs). Meanwhile, hes promoting
Thieverys recently released seventh
studio album, the bossa novainfluenced Saudade.
Theyre both artistic
pursuits, he says of his parallel
endeavors. Music feels a little
more magical because it doesnt
exist in physical space. But with
restaurants, youre still creating
something out of nothing. Its really
fun to build things.
