Students brainstorm safety issues that they encounter in their daily lives
Activity 2.
Students use the brainstorm to uncover links between positive relationships
and safety. This may include safe use of ICT and the internet or dealing with
uncomfortable or potentially unsafe situations.
Activity3.
In pairs, students discuss a range of social situations and theorize about the
types of behaviours which would be appropriate in each situation.
Activity 4.
In pairs, the students are to research sources of information either about
social safety, cyber safety or safety when participating in physical
activities, and places where they access community resources to seek help
about safety. The second part of this task involves evaluating each source
of information and ranking the validity of each source.

Lesson 2
Investigating
Safety
Resources

Students investigate
strategies for accessing
community resources when
seeking help about health,
safety & wellbeing

Students complete teacher devised Kahoots quiz, based on week one topics
to assess for understanding.
Activity 1.
Teacher led discussion about the safety issues which young people face.
Activity 2.
This is followed by a THINK, PAIR, SHARE which seeks to answer the
following questions:

How do you know when youre safe or unsafe?


What kinds of feelings or emotions do you experience in these types
of situations?
How would you deal with a threatening, unsafe or uncomfortable

situation?
Activity 3.
In small groups (3-4), students are to devise a short role play scenario
which addresses a potentially unsafe situation. The role play should be
written with an alternate ending demonstrating how the protagonist could
better manage the unsafe situation.

Lesson 3
Respectful
relationships

Students will explore the


characteristics of positive
relationships and learn how
to establish and maintain
respectful relationships
with others

Activity 1.
Students create a word wall of terms and words associated with positive
relationships, students should be cued to think about how they feel and
how they are treated in the relationship when assessing the relationship.
Activity 2.
Students participate in a range of trust and teamwork games and activities
which actively demonstrate aspects of positive relationships such as trust,
respect, support etc.
Activity 3.
As a class students will negotiate a list of rights and responsibilities within
relationships.
Activity 4.
Students outline in a personal journal entry the rights and responsibilities
they have within one of their own relationships.

Lesson 4
Managing power

Students answer the following questions:

Provide example for how young people could misuse the power they
have in relationships when they are bigger, more popular or more
intelligent than others.
Identify reasons why people misuse the power they have within
relationships.
Explain why the misuse of power can be destructive to relationships.

Activity 2.
Students complete teacher devised Kahoots quiz outlining power
relationships in various scenarios. Class discuss ways in which the
characters in each scenario could use their power in a positive way.
Activity 3.
In pairs, students will investigate a type of abusive relationship. Outline
either emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Students to present their
findings to the class.
Lesson 5
Bullying,
harassment and
new friendships.

In this lesson students will


explore the types of
bullying and investigate the
reasons people bully
others.

Activity 1.
Students participate in a teacher led class discussion in a reflection circle to
discuss and share stories and experiences with bullying. The circle allows
students to feel safe and comfortable in a non-threatening caring
environment.
Activity 2.
Students read case studies relating to the legal ramifications of cyber
bullying and collect information from trusted internet sources to inform
activity 3.
Activity 3.
Students create a web based poster/advertisement/ information sheet
outline the dangers of cyber bullying.

Lesson 6
Ways to
promote safety

The students will propose

promote safe participation
in physical activities

This lesson involves planning a safety information session to be delivered to


year 6 students at a neighboring feeder school.
Students will be randomly selected to work in groups to create and deliver
the following:

Role play about Bullying


Working on a power point presentation on internet safety
Create team building and trust activities and exercises to run with
students
Create a reflective crossword puzzle highlighting key terminology
