ABC Middle School Discipline Plan

Mission:
ABC Middle Schools mission is to prepare our students for the academic demand of high
school and to graduate well rounded students. ABC Middle School students are academically
excellent as well as responsible and moral citizens. Our school wishes to encourage responsible
and moral behavior by promoting a positive school environment that promotes responsibility and
good character.
Rules:
1. Students will keep all hands, feet and objects to themselves.
2. Students will respect all faculty, staff and fellow students.
3. Students will come to class with all the necessary materials.
4. Students will not eat or drink in class, which includes chewing gum.
5. Students will not use any personal electronic devices such as cell phones or laptops
unless allowed by a teacher during a specific class period.
Consequences:
- First Consequence: Verbal Warning.
(The student will receive a verbal warning from the teacher.)
- Second Consequence: Student writes his/her name on the board.
(The first of the three strikes. This is intended to inform the student that his/her
behavior is causing a problem and inhibiting the learning of the class).
*The name and check system restarts every week and not everyday.
- Third Consequence: Student adds a check mark next to his/her name.
(A sign of the second strike. The student should recognize that they are very close
to receiving a write-up if the behavior is continued.)
- Fourth Consequence: Student adds a second check mark to his/her name and receives
a disciplinary action form aka a write-up.
(The disciplinary action form or write-up details the behavior of the student and
is sent home and requires a parent signature upon return.)
- Fifth Consequence: Student is sent to the Principals office.
(At this point the student has been a continuous behavioral issue
Teaching Expectations:
1. Students and Parents are expected to read the school conduct guide and sign a form
agreeing to school rules.
2. School rules will be posted throughout the school.
3. All faculty and staff will model proper behavior.
Team Encouragement Strategies (toward students):
1. Faculty and Staff should offer verbal praise when they observe students demonstrating
correct school behavior.
2. Students in a class that exhibit good behavior will be able to attend field trips.
3. Teachers should at least try to send a letter home regarding the positive influence and
good behavior exhibited by their child.

4. At the end of every month teachers will elect a student in their homeroom class that
has been exhibiting positive behavior and submit the name of the student to the office and
they will be read during the school announcements.
5. Teachers who have students that have the least number of behavior incidents can
submit their names for a pizza lunch at the end of the semester.
Team Encouragement Strategies (for teachers):
1.The principal will award teachers who have a perfect attendance record for the school
year with a gift card of their choice from the prize box.
Team Procedures:
1. Late Homework
-All homework that is turned in after the moment the teacher collects the
assignment is late.
-Late homework should be turned in no later than a week after the original
deadline.
-Points/percentage may be reduced after each day, at the discretion of the teacher.
-Students should turn in late homework in a designated area (i.e. late homework
bin) at a specific time chosen by the teacher.
2. Extra Credit
-Teachers have the right to assign extra credit work.
-All extra credit assignments must be turned by the last class before the final
exam, if not earlier.
-Extra Credit should be turned into a specific homework bin or tray.
3. Headings
-Every student should put their name on all papers, assignments and tests.
-If there is no name it will result in a grade reduction.
-On all work that is to be turned in students should list their name, the date, the
period/class and the type of assignment (i.e. homework, extra credit, late
assignment, make-up work, etc.) in the right hand corner of the
paper.
-The title of the assignment should be listed in the center.
4. Procedure for Absentees
-Teachers should have a bin labeled "Missed Assignments" and anytime an
assignment is passed out the absent student's name is written on a copy
and put
into the missed assignment box.
-Students should check the box upon their return and check for any assignments
that have their name on it.
-If the Student misses a test or quiz they need to meet with the teacher and discuss
options for making up the work.
Parent Conference Format:
If a teacher finds himself or herself in a position where it is necessary to meet with a
parent of a student, approach the situation focusing on the betterment of the student and
enhancing their opportunity for learning. There are many formats or styles of setting up a parentteacher conference but always ensure that it is a two-way conversation. The parents are meeting

with the teacher as a way of understanding how their child is progressing and developing. The
teacher is meeting with the parents to inform them as well as understand possible reasons for the
childs behavior or need for assistance. Teachers should be sure to provide parents with examples
of student work to discuss their growth and progress. Listen to the parents, but be sure to ask
questions if clarification is needed. It would be best to share any ideas that you (the teacher)
might have to support student learning and seek some form of collaboration with the parents.
Finally, the teacher should seek to establish some line of communication with the parent if
possible.
School Community Plan/Vision:
ABC Middle Schools vision is to create a school community that not only promotes
learning and academic success for all students, but a sense of belonging for all students, faculty
and staff. Our Middle School has teachers who are passionate about teaching and the academic
success of our students. ABC Middle School plans on promoting and establishing school
community by having students participate in school wide contests according to their grade level
during Spirit Week, where every day has a specific theme. Our school also plans on establishing
a school wide contest called Penny Wars. This contest will divide the school into grade levels,
which will be further divided into Houses. This contest not only unifies the students across
many grade levels but also has the goal of raising money for our scholarship program. Besides
organizing an array of fun contests, school community will be encouraged during an array of fun
activities (i.e. DJ Pizza Lunch, field trips and rallies) that will occur during the school year.
Discipline Theory:
Our schools mission is to prepare our students academically and to help them develop
into well-rounded, responsible and moral citizens. This is why our school discipline plan is
complex and focuses on developing self-discipline. Other schools will typically use forms of
external discipline, such as corporal punishments, suspension and expulsion, as a form of
response to disruptive students (Osher, Bear, Sprague & Doyle, 2010). ABC Middle School uses
an ecological approach combined with school wide positive behavioral supports and positive
youth development to encourage positive behavior beginning in the classroom and then
spreading throughout campus (Osher et al., 2010).
The ecological approach begins in the classroom with teachers that promote personal and
social development by personal example. Beginning at the lowest level, students will be aware
and observe what is proper in terms of personal and social development and interaction. Also
included in this is the idea of social emotional learning which focuses on developing the qualities
of the individual, such as their strengths in regards to social, emotional, cognitive and moral
development as well as positive mental health (Osher et al., 2010). To follow this approach and
encourage the desired behavior our faculty and staff will engage students in an array of activities
that will promote self-awareness and social awareness as well as teaching self-management and
responsible decision-making.
After beginning at the most basic level of discipline education within the classroom.
Students will also be able to recognize the school wide positive behavioral supports that will be
modeled by not only the teachers but also the rest of the schools faculty and staff members. This
method has its roots in B.F. Skinners behavioral theory of positive behavioral supports (Osher et
al., 2010). Due to this form of active teaching and modeling of positive behavior, as well as

rewarding positive behavior through our different encouragement strategies, we hope to reduce
behavioral problems as well as improve the schools over all community (Osher et al., 2010)
