Conventions Used
Throughout this Manual

Throughout this manual the term:

ComfortVIEW single-user version refers to ComfortVIEW

operating in conjunction with the Microsoft SQL Server
2005 Express database management system. It is important
to note, however, that ComfortVIEW single-user version
will also operate with the Microsoft SQL Server database
management system, if this database has been installed on
your computer prior to the ComfortVIEW installation.

ComfortVIEW multi-user version refers to ComfortVIEW

operating in conjunction with the Microsoft SQL Server
database management system.

All Windows XP instructions assume that you are using XP's

Overview

Alarm Manager

Overview
Product Versions

ComfortVIEW operates under the Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional and Server, or Windows 2003
Server operating system. ComfortVIEW multi-user version operates
in conjunction with the Microsoft SQL Server database management
system, while ComfortVIEW single-user version operates in conjunction with the Microsoft SQL Server database management
system.
ComfortVIEW can operate on a standalone computer or across a
local or wide area network on multiple computers in a client/server
arrangement. You should purchase the proper product version for
your needs. Each version is described below:
ComfortVIEW single-user version is intended for use on standalone
computers that are not connected by means of a local area network.
It can however, be installed on a computer connected to a local area
network, if desired. It also can be used to dial in to and access other
ComfortVIEW systems installed on remote computers. You need a
ComfortVIEW single-user version package for each computer on
which you intend to install ComfortVIEW. The single-user version
permits one user to log on at a time.
ComfortVIEW multi-user version is used on multiple computers that
have been connected to a local area network. You can also use it to
dial in to and access other ComfortVIEW systems installed on
remote computers. You need only one ComfortVIEW multi-user
version package for each local area network installation. This
version, when fully installed, provides you with one computer acting
as the ComfortVIEW server and several other computers, all on the
same local area network, acting as ComfortVIEW clients. This
arrangement permits a common ComfortVIEW database to exist on
the ComfortVIEW server, and it allows coordinated operation of all
ComfortVIEW client workstations. The multi-user version permits
up to 5 users to be logged on simultaneously.
Installing your single-user or multi-user software requires you to
perform the following sequential steps for each ComfortVIEW
workstation.

Installation Steps

1.

Set up computer hardware I/O components (internal modem,

local area network adapter card, RS-485 serial communication interface).
Note:

2.

Your computer supplier may have completed this

step already.

Install the Windows 2000, XP, or 2003 Server operating

system software.
Note:

Your computer supplier may have completed this

step already.

3.

If ComfortVIEW is to be used to access other ComfortVIEW

systems remotely, install the Remote Access Connection
Manager Service (Dial-up Networking).

4.

For the multi-user version only, install Microsoft SQL Server

database management system software. For up to 5 users you
can use SQL Server Express. For more than 5 users, you must
use SQL 2005 Standard or Enterprise. (ComfortVIEW single
user Version 3.2 integrates the SQL Server Express database
installation process automatically, as part of the installation.)
Note:

Installation of SQL Server is only required on the

ComfortVIEW server computer. ComfortVIEW
client computers do not require SQL. SQL 2005
Standard or Enterprise must be sourced locally.

5.

Install ComfortVIEW software.

6.

Configure ComfortVIEW start-up parameters.

You will find information for each of these steps in this manual.
Product Package

Your ComfortVIEW product package contains the following material:

must be attached to the ComfortVIEW server computer, limits the
number of concurrent user logins. It is a required element on every
system. Users cannot log into ComfortVIEW without this key in
place.
ComfortVIEW Mouse Pad
Microsoft SQL Server A database management system designed
to operate under Windows. This component is only required and
included with ComfortVIEW multi-user version.
Note:

Single-User
Version

International customers must purchase Microsoft SQL

Server separately.

You can use the single-user version in three ways: on a local CCN,
to access a remote CCN, and to access a remote ComfortVIEW
workstation.

Local Site Operation

The most common use of the ComfortVIEW single-user version is

monitoring a building on site. This method directly attaches the
ComfortVIEW workstation to the Carrier Comfort Network bus.
See Figure 1. You can also have multiple workstations running the
ComfortVIEW single-user version, each connected directly to the
Carrier Comfort Network bus.
A Carrier Comfort Network serial communications interface is required for each workstation attached to a CCN.
If, however, CCN to Ethernet converters are used, only a
LAN connection is required. In this case, networking is
also required.

A Carrier Comfort Network serial communications interface is required for each workstation directly attached to a
CCN. If, however, CCN to Ethernet converters are used,
only a LAN connection is required.

For local sites with several CCNs, you would directly attach each
CCN to be monitored to a ComfortVIEW workstation on the local
area network. Figure 3 shows a CCN attached to the ComfortVIEW
server and a CCN attached to a ComfortVIEW client. Once a CCN
is attached to a ComfortVIEW workstation, it is accessible by all
workstations on the local area network.
8

Note:

In order to access information from controllers connected

to the CCN attached to the client with communication, the
ComfortVIEW server must be operational and communicating with the client over the LAN.

Remote Access to a
Workstation

You can access the multi-user version server workstation remotely

via modem from any ComfortVIEW workstation. This mode of
access requires an internal or external high speed modem. When you
access ComfortVIEW remotely, it acts as the server in a client/
server relationship with the calling ComfortVIEW workstation. As
a server, ComfortVIEW shares database information and coordinates actions to be taken on the Carrier Comfort Network.

Autodial Gateway
Access to a Remote
CCN

The ComfortVIEW multi-user version can access numerous remote

CCNs using the Autodial Gateway Option or an internal or external
modem. The Autodial Gateway Option must be purchased separately and installed on the CCN or PC, respectively. You can make
simultaneous phone connections to several remote CCNs if you
have several Autodial Gateways on your local CCN. See Figure 2,
Service Support System Setup.

Printer Operation

You can attach a printer to any ComfortVIEW workstation on the

local area network. It is accessible by all other ComfortVIEW
workstations. Multiple printers can be employed. Typical uses for
multiple printers include dedicating printers to print alarms originating from specific building areas and dedicating a printer for report
output. ComfortVIEW users can have access to all printers on the
Windows network for these operations.

Windows
Installation

Alarm Manager

Windows
Installation
ComfortVIEW operates under the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Server or XP Professional operating systems. The proper
operating system must be installed and running on your computer
before you begin installing ComfortVIEW.
Most computers will be delivered with the appropriate Windows
2000 or XP operating system pre-installed. If this is not the case
with your computer, install the Windows 2000 or XP operating
system, specifying the required information as prompted.
Note:

Guidelines and
Prerequisites

Before installing Windows, verify that your hardware is

on the Hardware Compatibility List delivered with the
Windows software. Microsoft can only support devices
that are on the Hardware Compatibility List. If any of your
devices are not on the list, contact the device manufacturer
to request a Windows 2000/XP device driver, if one is
available.

Windows installation pre-requisites and guidelines are discussed on

the pages that follow.

File System

The file system determines how Windows names, stores and organizes files and directories. Windows and ComfortVIEW support the
FAT and FAT32 (File Allocation Table), and NTFS (New Technology File System) file systems. During Windows installation, you are
asked about the type of file system that you wish to install.

Networking

All ComfortVIEW versions, with the exception of the standalone

installation option, require the installation of Windows networking
software. ComfortVIEW supports both the NetBEUI and the TCP/IP
networking protocols.
Note:

In client/server applications ComfortVIEW requires

NetBIOS name resolution (using HOST files or a Windows server.)

TCP/IP and Windows 2000: When using Windows 2000 and

configuring TCP/IP, be sure to enable the NetBIOS over TCP/IP
option. You can access this option under the WINS configuration of
TCP/IP.
19

If your computer is not always going to be connected to a LAN, be

sure to also install the NetBEUI protocol in addition to TCP/IP.
Information on installation and support for NetBEUI under Windows XP can be found in the appendix of this manual.
Network Card:
The multi-user version will only operate if you successfully
install a local area network card and its associated Windows
device driver. If the network card was installed at the time that
Windows was installed on the PC, then it is likely that the local
area network card device driver was successfully installed
during the Windows installation process. See the Hardware
Setup section of this manual's Hardware Requirements and
Setup chapter.
Networking Without a Network Card:
If you have ComfortVIEW single-user version your computer
may not contain a network card. If this is the case, be sure to
select the standalone option when installing ComfortVIEW.
Windows XP File
Sharing

You must enable file sharing on Windows XP computers that are

running ComfortVIEW server software. You do this using the
Network wizard. Follow the instructions below:
1.

Right click on My Network Places, and select Properties.

2.

In the Network Connections dialog box, under Network

Tasks, select Set up a home or small office network.
This will bring up the Network Setup wizard.

20

3.

Click on Next to proceed through the wizard windows.

4.

Set up your connections according to your specific computer

network or system.

5.

Provide your computer name. This name will be the computer

name that you will identify as your ComfortVIEW server
when installing your ComfortVIEW clients.

6.

Provide the name of your work group. This information can

be obtained from your network administrator.

7.

The final wizard window states that you must run the Network wizard on all your computers. Note that this is only
necessary for ComfortVIEW XP server computers.

Other Required
Information

In order to complete the Windows installation, you may be required

to supply the following information:
Domain Name:
This name is used only when a Windows domain server is
present on a local area network.
Suggestion:

Leave this entry blank.

Workgroup Name:
This name identifies and categorizes Windows workstations
located on a local area network.
Suggestion:

Use the default name (Workgroup).

Computer Name:
The computer name may consist of up to 15 characters, limited
to the characters A-Z, 0-9 and the dash (-). This name must be
unique if the computer is on a local area network. Even if you do
not intend to connect the computer to a local area network
sometime in the future, you should assign unique names to your
standalone computers during the installation process. SERVER,
CLIENT1, and CLIENT2 are examples of valid computer
names.
Administrator Password:
During the installation, you are prompted to enter the administrator password (up to 14 characters). To log into Windows after
installation, you will use the user name Administrator and the
password that you enter here. If you forget the password that
you supplied during installation, and there is not another user
with administrator level privilege, you must run the Windows
installation program again in order to perform administrative
level functions.
Note:

Passwords are case sensitive.

Suggestion:

Use a standard Administrator password for all

installations.

21

Windows User Name and Password:

During Windows installation, you set up the Administrator
account. Eventually, all ComfortVIEW users will require a
Windows user name and password. After Windows is installed,
you can use the Computer Manager application under the Administrative Tools program group to add an additional user
name with Administrator rights and additional users. See your
Windows documentation for complete instructions on adding
users.
Note:

If you intend for a ComfortVIEW user to use the

ComfortVIEW Automatic Login feature, you must
assign this user a user name of 8 characters or less. It is
also recommended that all user names be unique within
the first 8 characters.

Suggestion:

22

After completing the Windows installation, it is

recommended that you add a new user and
assign that user administrator level privileges.
Then log in to Windows as that user and perform
SQL Server and ComfortVIEW installation. This
will allow you to have an administrator user
account as a backup.

Video Resolution

ComfortVIEW is designed to run with a minimum display

resolution of 800 x 600 pixels using small fonts. You can run
ComfortVIEW with the Windows standard VGA default resolution (640 x 480 pixels), but several ComfortVIEW screens will
not completely fit in the display.

Emergency Repair
Disk (ERD)

The ERD helps you to repair problems with your system files,
startup environment, and partition boot sector of the boot volume. This disk should be updated after installing
ComfortVIEW. To update your ERD in Windows 2000, select
Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup and then
select Emergency Repair Disk.

Event Viewer

The Windows Event Viewer tracks various non-critical systemtype events on your computer. It is a good place to gather information for troubleshooting computer problems. After installing
Windows, you should enable the Event Viewer's Overwrite

Events as Needed option. This will ensure that the Event Viewer
logs do not reach their capacity. The Event Viewer is located in
Windows Administrative Tools. Be sure to enable the Overwrite
Events as Needed option in all Event Viewer logs System,
Security, and Application.
In Windows 2000/XP/2003 Server:
Select Start, Setting, Control Panel, Administrative Tools and
the Event Viewer.
In the left column, right click on each log and select Properties.
Under Log Size, enable the Overwrite Events as Needed option.

Changing the
Windows
Computer Name

If you decide to change your Windows computer name after installing ComfortVIEW, you must first change the name in the
ComfortVIEW database. Perform the following steps to do so:
1.

Follow the instructions in To Add a New Workstation in the

Setup chapter of the ComfortVIEW Operation Manual to add
the new computer name to the ComfortVIEW database.

2.

Proceed to change the Windows computer name to the new

name used in Step 1.

3.

After changing the computer name, reboot your

ComfortVIEW computer.
Note:

4.

SQL Server 7.0 or greater may display an error

message telling you that your installation is corrupt.
If this occurs, you must re-run the SQL Server
installation. Turn to the Installing SQL Server
instructions in the next chapter of this manual.
Complete Steps 1 and 2 of that procedure and then
skip to and proceed from Step 7 (Select Install SQL
Server Server Desktop Edition.)

Follow the instructions in To Delete an Existing Workstation

in the Setup chapter of the ComfortVIEW Operation Manual
to delete the old computer name from the ComfortVIEW
database.

23

If you change the computer name of a workstation that has a

CCN connected to it (ComfortVIEW server or client w/
communications) those CCN(s) will now display as Database
Only

. You must now enter the Carrier Network

Manager application, select the CCN(s), and use the Configure menus Modify command to modify the CCN access
method. For instructions, see the Adding/Modifying CCNs
section of the ComfortVIEW Operation Manual's Carrier
Network Manager chapter, or refer to ComfortVIEW on-line
help.
Note:

If you change the computer name of your server workstation, you must run the ComfortVIEW installation program
again on all client workstations, specifying the new server
workstation name when prompted.
You should also re-install ComfortVIEW on the server to
update any reference to the old computer name in graphic
backgrounds.

When ComfortVIEW client and server workstations are connected

by a local area network, the computer names of all the workstations
must be identified. By specifying these computer names, you form
links between all ComfortVIEW clients and the ComfortVIEW
server. These computer names are used to communicate messages
across the local area network.
Note:

Specifying
Workstation Names

A remote ComfortVIEW client workstation that has dialed

into a ComfortVIEW server workstation behaves as if it
were on a local area network with the server, and so must
be treated as a client in your system. To allow a remote
client workstation to access a ComfortVIEW server, you
must specify the computer name of the remote client in
the servers ComfortVIEW Setup function.

RS-232/485
Converters

Carrier only recommends converters that provide optical isolation.

Optical isolation provides protection to the computer by isolating it
from the CCN Communication Bus. The converters that Carrier
currently recommends for ComfortVIEW and other PC-based user
interfaces are:

CCN Repeater
Network Access Module (NAM)
B&B 3PCIOSD1A

The CCN Repeater and NAM are currently available through Carrier. The B&B adapter is a third party adapter. Contact information
for this vendor is as follows:

Installation
Guidelines
CCN Repeater

The CCN Repeater (P/N CEAS420876-02) is a CCN module which

provides the ability to convert RS-232 to RS-485. The Repeater is
an external device that requires two (2) isolated power sources (18/
20 Vac or 24/28 Vdc). The CCN Communication Bus connects to
the Repeater's 4 pin COM1 connector, and the serial port from the
computer connects to the 25 D-shell female connector on the front
of the Repeater Module.
Since the connection between the computer and the Repeater Module is RS-232 protocol, the distance between the two devices should
not exceed twenty five (25) feet.
The user-supplied cable connection between the Repeater and the
computer uses a standard modem cable with a DB25 male connector
at one end and either a DB9 or DB25 female pin connector on the
other end, depending on the computer's serial port. In order for the
connection to work correctly, the following minimum pin connections are required:

The NAM Module (P/N 33CSNA-01) is a CCN system element that

you can use as either a RS-232 to RS-485 protocol converter or as a
remote call-in device (by attaching an external modem). You cannot
use it for both purposes simultaneously. This system element requires a 24 Vac power source. Similar to the CCN Repeater, the
NAM should not be located more than 25 feet from the computer
due to the RS-232 protocol limitation.
The NAM includes a short cable with a DB9 connector for connection to the computer. This cable connects to the Modem/PC (J3)
terminal strip port on the NAM. The supplied cable has the following pin connections:

B&B 3PCIOSD1A
Converter

The 3PCIOSD1A converter is an internal, optically isolated RS-232

to RS-485 converter supplied by B&B Electronics. It is a PCI card
that is installed inside a computer. For Carrier CCN applications,
this card can be configured for use as any communication port
COM1 through COM8.
Board Configuration
Before you install the board you must configure it for proper operation with Carrier equipment. The board includes four (4) jumper
headers that are used to configure the protocol portion of the card.
This configuration is independent of the COM port for which the
board is configured.
Configuring the Protocol Specific Jumper Headers
Configure the following jumper headers for the protocol portion of
the board operation.

with the card.
Note:

Be sure to install ComfortVIEW after the card has been

installed.

Network Connection
The B&B 3PCIOSD1A card requires a 25 pin female D-shell connector for connection to the CCN Bus. This connector should be

Printer

You can use one or several printers to record hardcopy results of

ComfortVIEW reports, alarms or display screens. You can set up
one printer to print alarms only, and another to print reports or you
can print alarms and reports to the same printer. The printers that
you use to perform these operations can be directly connected to

this printer for report printing, you should to share the printer
on your LAN

3.

If you intend to share the printer, and if the computer to

which the printer is attached is running the Windows XP
operating system, you must perform one additional step to
ensure proper access to the shared printer. This additional
configuration is only necessary on the Windows XP system to
which the shared printer is physically attached, and it only
needs to be performed once:
a.

Make sure you are logged into Windows XP with Administrator access privileges.

b.

From the Windows Start menu, select Run and type

MMC.EXE and then press Enter. This will open the
Microsoft Management Console.

c.

Select File, Open, and open the SECPOL.MSC file

located in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder.
If you have upgraded your operating system from Windows NT, you can find this file in the
\WINNT\SYSTEM32 folder.

d.

Click on the + sign in front of the Local Policies heading

in the left panel.

e.

Click on the Security Controls option.

f.

In the right panel, scroll down to find the policy named

Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to
anonymous users.
Double-click on this policy.

g.

72

Enable this policy (by selecting Enabled) and click on

OK.

h.

From the menu, select File, Exit, and when prompted to

save the console settings to SECPOL.MSC, click on Yes.
Your Windows XP system is now configured to properly
share its printers with other ComfortVIEW client workstations.

ComfortVIEW Reports
on a Network (LAN)
Printer

You may want to direct the printing of a ComfortVIEW report to a

shared printer attached to another workstation on your Local Area
Network (LAN). For example, a user at a ComfortVIEW Client
workstation may want to direct a ComfortVIEW report to print on
the printer attached to the ComfortVIEW Server workstation.
ComfortVIEW is unable to send reports directly to shared network
printers, but by following the steps below, you can "trick"
ComfortVIEW into thinking that your shared network printer is
actually attached directly to your ComfortVIEW Client workstation.
Perform the following steps once for each Windows user account at
each ComfortVIEW workstation that will be sending reports to a
shared network printer.
1.

From the Windows Start menu, select Run and type

CMD.EXE. Then press Enter.
This will open an MS-DOS command prompt window.

2.

At the DOS prompt type, NET USE /PERSISTENT:YES and

then press Enter.
This command allows Windows to retain the printer network
settings that will be made in Step 3.

3.

At the DOS prompt type, NET USE LPTn: \\workstation

name\printer name (followed by pressing Enter) where:
n denotes an unused computer parallel port on the local
ComfortVIEW workstation (n=1,2,3,4,...)
workstation name is the Windows computer name of the
ComfortVIEW workstation with the network printer
printer name is the share name you chose for the network
printer in the previous section (for example, CVPRINTER).
Example: NET USE LPT2: \\NODE1\CVPRINTER will
connect LPT2 to the printer shared as CVPRINTER attached
to workstation NODE1.
73

Note:

If the client workstation is running the Windows XP

operating system, you will only be able to select
LPT1 as your local parallel port.

4.

Type EXIT to end your DOS session.

5.

Create a new printer through the Windows Add Printer

function using the printer properties shown below. If necessary, refer to your Windows manual for instructions on
creating printers using the Add Printer function.

3.

Click on the Sharing tab and enable this printer for sharing.
Assign a unique name that will identify this printer on your
LAN (for example, ALMPRINT).

4.

Click on OK to close the Properties dialog box.

5.

From the Windows Start menu, select Run and type

CMD.EXE and then press Enter.
This will open an MS-DOS command prompt window.

6.

At the DOS prompt type, NET USE /PERSISTENT:YES and

then press Enter.
This command allows Windows to retain the printer network
settings that will be made in Step 7.

7.

At the DOS prompt type, NET USE LPTn: \\workstation

name\printer name (followed by pressing Enter) where:
n denotes an unused computer parallel port on the local
ComfortVIEW workstation (n=1,2,3,4,...)
workstation name is the Windows computer name of this
computer
printer name is the share name you chose for the network
printer in step 3 (for example, ALMPRINT).

If the workstation is running the Windows XP

operating system, you will only be able to select
LPT1 as your local parallel port.

8.

Type EXIT to end your DOS session.

9.

Follow the steps identified for parallel printers, above, making sure to select your computer name and the LPT port you
identified in the NET USE command.

You can use a single printer for both report printing and alarm
logging. Make sure that the printer you wish to use has been added
to Windows using the Add Printer function before proceeding with
the steps below. If necessary, refer to your Windows manual for
instructions on creating printers using the Add Printer function.
1.

Follow the procedure defined previously in this appendix for

ComfortVIEW Reports on a Local (Attached) Printer.

from a different ComfortVIEW Client workstation.
The printer is a USB printer.

2.

From the ComfortVIEW Setup application, select Setup,

Alarm printers, and then select New.

3.

Assign the printer a unique name and identify its location by

selecting the correct computer and port to which the printer
was added. Note that if the printer is a USB printer, you will
have to link the printer's shared name to a local port through
the NET USE command.
If necessary, refer to the USB Printers instructions in the
section of this appendix titled ComfortVIEW Printers Dedicated to Alarm Logging Only.

4.

76

Save the configuration by selecting OK from the open dialog

boxes.

5.

If you would like to filter the types of alarms that will be sent
to this printer, select Administration, Alarm printers, and
follow the instructions in the Setup chapter of the
ComfortVIEW Operation Manual.
