Heroes of the naval warfare

Who do you think is the best admiral in the world? There were lots of heroes
in the naval warfare. Themistocles in the battle of Salamis, Francis Drake in the
battle of Calais, many heroes had their name up after the greatest battles. Above all,
Admiral Yi Sun-sin and Admiral Horatio Nelson could be introduced as the finest
admiral in the world. People in Korea and England will agree that both admirals are
the supreme commander in their histories of clash. Although they have been known
as the outstanding admiral in the history, they have three different careers.
Firstly, they had different leadership. Admiral Yi Sun-sin led his soldiers with
his strict belief. Because of his strict belief, he always eradicated illegalities and
corruptions, so his warriors placed great dependence on him. Besides, He executed
one of marines who was filled with fear and fled away before the battle. His
quotation, Those who seek the death shall live, those who seek life shall die., is
very famous above his quotations. Admiral Horatio Nelson, on the other hand, led
his troopers like a familiar friend. He granted his troopers requests readily and
praised them highly. He also always took the lead first. Although he could be a
target of enemys snipers, he didnt hide and took the initiative in the battle of
Copenhagen and the battle of Trafalgar. Thus, Horatios companies could trust him
easily with his action and leadership.

Next, they had different confidences from their king. Admiral Yi Sun-sin
couldnt gain the king Sunjos faith. When he kept on rolling in the battles, the king
Sunjo was afraid of that admiral Yi Sun-sin could plot against the king with his super
powers. The king Sunjo didnt support admiral at all, so Yi Sun-sin had to train his
forces only with his own power. Even though the king didnt help him, subjects of the
Joseon aided him willingly. When he was put in a prison and served in a war as a
commoner because of colleague generals jealousy, people grieved for him. On the
contrary, Admiral Horatio Nelson could gain the king Georges faith. He grew up in a
cleric family and joined the navy at twelve years old. He spent his childhood in the
navy and performed outstanding activities. Consequently, he became an admiral at
twenty years old and got a recognition as a great commander. Because he had
guaranteed careers and reputations, the king George could trust easily and support
him readily, and most British people had faith in him as well.
On top of that, they used different tactics in the battles. Admiral Yi Sun-sin
often used natural environments. The environment in Korean sea was different with
Japanese sea. Because Yi sun-sin knew that there was a roaring current on the sea
of Myeongnyang, he lured Japanese navies into the thunderous current and could
repulse flustered enemies with only thirteen ships. Furthermore, he spotted a limited
battle space, which was a disadvantage for fleeing Japanese companies, in front of
the Hansan Island. Consequently, he could beat enemies off with backing into a
corner in the Hansando Battle. Admiral Horatio Nelson, conversely, used uncommon
tactics such as catching enemies off their guard. In that era, most naval tactics were
just concentrating fire in a line. However, Horatio Nelson, penetrated the crack of the
tactic. He ambushed flank of the enemy fleets and fragmentized their battle line in
the battle of Trafalgar. Attacking side of the battle line was critical to enemies

because single file line cant counteract it. They couldnt strike back skillfully at
Nelsons fast moving fleet and have no choice but to defeat the battle brutally.
It is ironic that as the greatest admirals in the naval warfare history, admiral Yi
Sun-sin and Horatio Nelson had very different careers. One of two admirals led
soldiers with strict charisma and used surrounding environment in tactics, but
couldnt gain a kings faith. The other led soldiers with friendly leadership and used
exceptional tactics. Moreover, he could gain a kings faith. It is nonsense to
estimate who is superior admiral in the naval warfare history. Nevertheless, we can
say that both are the heroes who save their endangered country from the invaders.
