Big BUZZ over new businesses

The smell of recovery is in the air.

And while its been too slow for
some, others would chant,
Slow and steady wins the race.
Through much of the summer
there seemed to be a hot-potato
approach to the towns future.
Everyone held a slice of the
potato but the job of mashing
that vegetable and serving it up
appeared out of reach.
There was not a government
agency, a box store, a mega
monster industrial giant or a flyby-night sugar daddy who
jumped up to shout, The
Mashed potatoes are ready!
Yet, while the sun shone during
the long summer days, plans
were quietly in the works.

Now that school-aged children

are behind desks, and yellow
busses are once again wheeling
through town, Status Quo has
replaced doubt. Normalcy has
been established with routines
of homework, dinners served at
the kitchen table, early bedtimes and hockey registration.
Suddenly the buzz is about:
Amandas sea-food dinners at
the Endkao Road House caf;
the tasty Chimichangas at Senior
Dougies; the aromatic Indian
cuisine at MJs in the shopping
centre; a fresh cup of coffee at
the Convenience/Dollar store
and weekend supper specials at
the Legion.

Existing businesses have

patiently waited for this
recovery. Although they aren't
jumping for joy yet, they must
be relieved that new investors
have made a commitment to the
area. With business expansion
comes a sense of celebration.
And people love to celebrate.
They love to eat and sample
new food and give their opinion
but most of all they love to
be a part of the Buzz.zz

Once again, Fraser Lake and

area residents will have options.

Local BCAS riding for pediatric cancer

Written by Elaine Storey
Saturday, September 17th, the Cops For Cancer riders pedalled
into town about 7pm. Family members and a few friendly riders
met the team at the Welcome sign on highway 16 east and followed them into town. With lights and sirens, local EMS vehicles
escorted the entourage safely off the highway through town to the
high school where riders were happy to call it a day. And what a
day it was, leaving Vanderhoof at 8:30 a.m. they rode to Fort St
James and back to highway 16 before continuing on to Fraser
Lake. That 175km leg is the longest ride in their 850 km trip
from Prince George to Prince Rupert over 7 days of rain or shine.
Among this years Tour de North riders is local BCAS Cathy Scott
who has been diligently training since March. Cathy trained indoors until the snow was gone, riding a stationary bike and on
warm days pedalling on her deck. The training requirement began
at 40 kms a week, building up to 160. Cathys husband Craig
joined her on one of those training days, We rode from here to

Plateau Mills and back. That was

enough for me, but Cathy continued on
doing another lap back to Plateau.
Along with months of rigorous training, all 26 riders raised a minimum of
$3,000 with proceeds going to pediatric cancer research and to
support programming like Camp Goodtimes.
In Fraser Lake, with another five days of riding ahead, the riders
were happy to dismount and wheel their bikes into the waiting
van. When host Judy LaRocque explained that dinner would be
served at the Legion, and showers and beds were at the school, it
was met with applause. Amid high-fives, hugs and handshakes the
entire Tour de North crew shared Cathy Scotts infectious smile.
Claiming to be neither sore nor tired after their ten-hour ride,
they shared their teammate sentiment Not after riding with this
great bunch for the past two days.

News from Endako Mine

September was a busy month at Endako Mine. With fall approaching, and winter soon to follow, aquatic effects monitoring field work was in full force. To aid with the field work, Hatfield Consultants (an environmental consulting company
specializing in aquatic monitoring) were onsite aiding with various aspects of the field program. Work included periphyton (algae which clings to rocks) and fish collection sampling and monitor environmental effects both on and off the site.
Also in September, a reclamation inspector with the Ministry of Energy and Mines toured the mine site. The inspector
was pleased with the progressive reclamation to
date, along with efforts to
control and mitigate dust.
As always, if there are any

The community was saddened by the death of Bill Satterwaite, he had been living in the area for several years and will be missed by his family and
many friends. May you rest in peace Bill.

August 31, 2016 I was blessed with my sixth Great Grandchild! Little Jayce made his appearance weighing in at six pounds and one ounce. His
proud parents are Tanis and Clay and his very proud Grand parents are Bruce & Jean Read; Shannon Payne, and the Great Grandparents, Dan &
Sharon Payne, Eva Kalhood and Evelyn Seigner as well as myself so this little fellow will have a lot of babysitters I'm sure!

You know with the lovely sunshine we have been having I managed to get a fairly good sunburn, now it is beginning to peel and it always makes
me wonder why if it is going to come off in layers so darn thin why couldn't we lose at least enough to make a difference!....People who were
born thin don't know how lucky they are!
*****
Been patronizing the Endako Roadhouse quite a bit lately with several friends, that is a darn good place to eat let me tell you! Not only is there
good food but the atmosphere is so nice and friendly! Thanks Mandy and staff for a great place to go that is close to home!
*****
Have been trying a lot of new recipes that will use up some of my many zucchini's that keep producing in my greenhouse. I think the best is the
Chocolate loaf, thanks Phyllis for that recipe! It not only tastes good but also freezes well.
*****
Rita & I went for a wiener roast at George & Toni-Lynn's the other night, had a great time under the roof of their gazebo while watching the thunder and lightening storm and later the beautiful rainbows!

People are busy hauling their hay for winter storage now, then it will be time to bring the cattle home, sort for shipping and then hopefully have
some fall pasture before having to start feeding.
*****
Got a message from "Yon Editor" today, September 15....she says she has to have an "early deadline which is September 19!" Now really, Elaine,
don't you realize how very busy everyone is at this time of year?..Naw, I don't think she does! But you know, she DOES do a jolly good job with
our little paper and sure works hard for Autumn Services so I guess I'll just "get with it" and send some bits of malarkey in for her...good thing I
kissed the blarney stone isn't it! LOL!
*****
Sold my last bull today, Ol' Buddy was leased out to our friends the Chapman's for the summer. His new home will be with Harold & Bonnie

Finally got the last of the potatoes dug and in the basement, I didn't plant nearly as many this year, was a good thing too because they really produced and most of them are huge! Have been giving a lot away along with carrots, cabbage etc. Some
folks aren't as fortunate and it is good to give a helping hand now and then. I think I finally have picked the
last of the zucchini thank goodness! I am getting a bit tired of trying to figure out what to do with it. The
tomatoes are still producing and sure are delicious, it will be a sad day when I have to go back to those
store bought things.
*****
The Rose Lake Community Hall put on a great Poker Ride & Cowboy Social on Sept. 18th, the steak dinner was delicious and I even won a jar of Wild Cranberry Jelly....my absolute favourite! Several Fraser
Lake folks including Don & Judy Carter as well as Carl & Ethel Wiggins rode in the ride and everyone had
a great time.
*****
I have several trees in my yard of different varieties, some are bright yellow and some are bright red, they
look gorgeous! Sure be nice if the leaves stay on the trees for a few weeks instead of getting blown off in
the wind. With all this rain and then sun I have had to get back to mowing the lawn regularly
again....seems like the work never ends!....I AM getting quite concerned about this winter though....no
cattle to feed, could end up to be pretty boring to say the least! I may have to take up some kind of hobby....ah well, time will tell, for all I know I may be living in Hawaii come December!
*****
There is a confounded Magpie hanging around my chicken house...could be the reason I haven't been getting many eggs lately come to think of it!...Anyway he has the bloomin' nerve to sit on the fence and
squawk at me as if I am invading HIS domain! I'd like to throw a rock at him and teach him a lesson but I
wouldn't hit him anyway! LOL I tell you, what I have to put up with these days!

Twelve-year-old J.J. West brings awareness to Cancer

Story &n photos by Elaine Storey

She was one of the smallest in the group. Her hi-vis vest hung
almost to her knees.
Her eyes were slightly red-rimmed from crying, and she held
tight a large picture of two beautiful women.
In her small hands she twisted a red, cloth bag. The contents tobacco - a gift from her friends in Stellaten.
Her name is Jaden West, her friends and family call her JJ.
She is twelve years old.
She stood quietly, her family and friends at her side.

Nick Erickson and daughter JJ West

Nick Erickson and JJ West with
Klath-Bhi at welcome ceremony

She listened, holding back tears when family friend from Vancouver Klath-Bhi drummed and sang to her. He commended
her for being an example of how to be. You carried our ancestors on your back and made them very proud.

When he knelt beside her he looked into her eyes and said he
wished to grow up to be just like her. To which the crowd laughed.
Following the drumming ceremony, she was led to her Aunty Alanas house where
all the family was gathering.
With an easy smile she admitted to getting tired on the way, and her feet got sore, but
she said, Cancer patients feel worse. And that was justification in her eyes to do what
she did.
And with a little giggle she thinks her school friends might think she was crazy, but she
thought others would think she was cool.
The day before her Aunty Alana passed away from stage 4 gall bladder cancer, JJ wanted
to raise public awareness of cancer. Inspired by Terry Foxs Marathon of Hope run and
the Cops for Cancer Tour de North, JJ thought she too could do a walk of her own.
She told her dad she wanted to walk from their home in Burns Lake to Nadleh where her
Aunty lived ...some ninety kilometers away.

JJ, you carry your ancestors on your back

When she told her dad, he said, Lets do it.

They began their trek after school on Friday night making it
only part way.
On Saturday several friends and family joined the group and
by Saturday evening they were just outside Fraser Lake.
Approaching Fraser Lake from the other direction on the same
evening were 26 members of the Cops for Cancer Tour de
North. Riders who had trained over five months, and had
spent over ten hours pedalling during day two of their 7 day
850 km trip from Prince George to Prince Rupert.
When they heard about JJ walking to raise awareness, the
riders met her along the highway . Two like minded missions. One hastily devised by a twelve year old, without
training, without gear. Yet each carrying their ancestors
and following their heart . Warriors ALL.

Writers Life

By Virginia Carraway Stark

The Birth of StarkLight Press

StarkLight Press was first conceived of in early 2013 and was officially publishing its first few books by the
end of the same year. I had always been a writer, I had had several movies made that starred Rowdy Roddy
Piper who was wonderful to work with. He requested me as a writer for his scripts for several more movies
after my first movie, Blind Eye that placed as getting an honorable mention at the Cannes Film Festival.
But despite some early success I enjoyed writing prose more than I enjoyed writing scripts. I had drawers full
of stories, novels that were three quarters done, poetry by the reel, but I had no real interest in pursuing a career as a writer. Like so many writers, my interest lay in creating the stories rather than packaging and promoting them. General disgust for the shallow world of film had also turned my attention away from promoting my work professionally in other quarters.
Instead of selling my fictional worlds, I started to write articles and blogs for science journals as well as filler
articles for wineries, reviews and even for the Government of Rwanda. It was a lot of work but I thrived off
of it and I was soon able to put aside my holistic healing business and start making the slow transition to a
full time career as a professional writer.
Blogs and science articles became a day job for me but my nights were set in wild parties in worlds that
sprung out of my subconscious mind. The articles are quiet, rational creatures whereas the fiction I wrote
was a complete surrender to the mind that lays below our rational brain centers, the world in particular of
speculative fiction where anything could happen was where my true passion for writing sprang from.
I started to get involved in online writing communities as my first baby step towards opening up those drawers of stories and creative work that had been left to sit in various states of being finished. It was while working on-line with other writers that I learned how to have a drive for writing. I was first nominated for an Aurora Award in 2014 for my on-line writing and then decided to get involved in the writing of a play of an author friend of mine. The play unfortunately ran into some issues and so I started on my own work. What
sprang out of a short story turned into a play that would have multiple runs and develop into an entire series
of novels called The Carnival Fun series.
What does this have to do with StarkLight Press' birth? That is what you are probably asking after reading
five paragraphs with the title of the article still dangling. That's part of where it comes back to being 'A Writer's Life'. I saw the author of the play I had originally begin work on struggle with gaining copyright to her
own world and characters. She wasn't allowed to just do anything with something from her own creation. In
fact, to buy back the rights to her world she ended up paying out over $30,000. A fact not lost on my fiance
who I had been writing with on-line when we met each other.
Unlike most writers, Anthony Stark is also a business oriented person. When he saw the vast quantities of
writing his wife-to-be was producing and the near disaster I courted when getting involved with a play that
had to be scrapped because it was thoroughly 'owned' not by the writer but by the publishing house who had
first signed the contract, he decided to put his business acumen into the creative sphere.
Anthony and several other people had already been working on a science fiction universe called the Galactic
Armed Forces. A bit tongue in cheek, the world combines hard science fiction and reality with humor as well
as some darkly dystopia aspects. You can check it out at www.gafmainframe.com
continued on page 10

P AGE 10

P HRASER C ONNECTOR

Continued from page 9

Anthony realized that if we already had tons of writing on-line and tons of writing off-line, that the sensible
thing to do was to form a publishing house to protect that writing so that I could always write a play about
my story, or sell the movie rights, or anything else I wanted. It struck us both as deeply wrong that a publisher had more rights to an author's creation than the author, all while still doing publicity, book signings, and
likely making little or even nothing off of royalties. Publishing houses quickly learn if the book they've
signed on isn't the new 'Harry Potter' or 'Fifty Shades of Grey' to backbench the book, the publicity and the
author leaving authors like beached whales: high and dry.
Originally the business model for StarkLight was purely defensive: make a corporation where we can safely
write and play without fear of having our 'babies' taken from us. Keep the copyrights intact and for the many
people who were already clamoring for GAF books and for Carnival Fun and other stories to be developed it
gave a place for our already hefty fan base to buy official copies of books. We decided to start off with a biyearly anthology for speculative fiction called simply: StarkLight Anthologies.
We put out a tenuous query for other author-friends to become involved in the anthologies and were bombarded with submissions. The result was to diversify into more anthologies, novels, of course, collaborative
novel writing (think of it like campfire story telling where each author takes a turn at taking the helm of the
story. This is done under the supervision of one story co-coordinator who makes sure that the story stays on
target and makes sense). This recently branched out further into a poetry imprint: StarkLight Philosophies.

StarkLight press continues to pick up speed and, like a snowball rolling downhill, much of it is driven off the
passion of sheer momentum. As we meet more and more talented authors to add to our growing business
community. Born out of my time in Fraser Lake, I will continue to keep you up to date on: A Writer's Life
through the Phraser Connector. Thanks to Elaine Storey for keeping up this fabulous regional publication!
Next month I will be interviewing publisher/author and business man Anthony Stark on his take of the Birth
of StarkLight Press. Tune in here!

You start dying slowly

if you do not travel
if you do not read,
if you do not listen to the sounds of life,
If you do not appreciate yourself.
You start dying slowly when you kill your self-esteem,
when you do not let others help you.
You start dying slowly if you become a slave to your habits,
walking everyday on the same paths...if you do not change your routine,
if you do not wear different colours or you do not speak to those you dont
know.
You start dying slowly if you avoid to feel passion & its turbulent
emotions, those that make your eyes glisten & your heart beat fast.
You start dying slowly if you do not change your life when you are not
satisfied with your job, or with your love or with your surroundings.
If you do not risk what is safe for the uncertain,
If you don not go after a dream,
if you do not allow yourself,
at lest once in your lifetime
to run away from sensible advice.
