Assistance Request for the YWCA Early Head Start Program Families & Staff

Partnership Opportunity with Stephen F. Austin's School of Social Work

October 2016

Our YWCA EHS Program started the new school year on Thursday, August 4, 2016.
Due to Emergency School Closure Warnings, we closed our EHS centers on Friday,
August 12, 2016 due to flash flooding. But On Saturday, August 13, 2016, a
devastating flood hit Baton Rouge and its surrounding areas leaving Louisiana
residents in awe of what is now being called The Great Flood of 2016. Many of our
families and staff were affected, leaving them displaced. There was massive flood
damage to homes, cars, and other possessions. Unfortunately, our Glen Oaks EHS
site had extensive flood damage as well; therefore, we've had to close our Glen
Oaks site while awaiting renovations.

Immediately, our YWCA CEO, Dianna Payton, and Management Team began
brainstorming ways to get our centers back open. Overall, our YWCA EHS Centers
were closed from Friday, August 12, 2016 through Friday, August 26, 2016. Our
YWCA EHS Staff returned on Monday, August 22, 2016 to begin the cleanup phase of our
GOEHS site, as well as, assessing and preparing to receive children at our other two sites.
Support was respectfully given to our EHS staff who were affected by the flood. On Monday,
August 29, 2016, our YWCA Istrouma EHS Center was opened back up to
children. The following day, our Prescott EHS Center opened back up to
children. And on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, 16 of the 24 Glen Oaks EHS children
began temporarily attending Istrouma EHS Center, since our Glen Oaks site had
been flooded out. We are still waiting to hear back from our Head Start Regional
Office with approval to offer home-based care to our remaining 8 GOEHS children,
as well as, our other families who have been displaced by the flood without means
of transportation and those displaced further out in distance. We are grateful to
our families and staff who have demonstrated such patience during this transition
period.. With the help of local and out-of-state community partners, we look
forward to brighter days.
