GOSPEL OF MARK NT352

FALL 2016
Jesus Calms the Turbulent
Mark 4:35-5:20

JESUS CALMS THE STORM ON

SEA OF GALILEE 35-41
Let us Cross Over to the Other Side 35-37
Jesus gives a direction to move to the other side of sea by boat
Other boats were with him this detail seems pointless yet it is important
A great windstorm not rain, but wind and waves! Why so fierce on a lake?

628 ft below sea

level in valley
winds come
down off
mountains

G. A. Smith describes his

experience there: The
atmosphere, for the most part,
hangs still and heavy but the
cold currents, as they pass
from the west, are sucked
down in vortices of air, or by
the narrow gorges that break
upon the lake. Then arise
those sudden storms for
which the region is
notorious.

SEA OF GALILEE 35-41
Jesus Calms Storm and the Disciples 38-41
He was in the stern asleep contrast to chaos of the storm and state of disciples
Jesus may have purposed multiple lessons through this test of their faith:
1.Perhaps he was showing the disciples they actually doubt His care
2.Perhaps he was sharpening their faith in his word Let us go over v.35
3.Perhaps he is showing us He doesnt spare us of trials but is with us in trials
4.Perhaps he is showing that Gods will often includes difficulty and resistance
5.Perhaps he was preparing them for greater turbulence of demoniac coming

JESUS CALMS THE DEMONIAC OF

GADARA 5:1-20
The Demoniac 1-5
His Town 1-2 (two possible places):

Mark meant the region of Gadara and not the city 30 miles from sea
Tradition locates a place in region of Gadara for the event (Slide)
Gadara (NKJV) and Gerasa (ESV) [depending on Greek base text]
Gerasa is likely the Arabic city Kersa at Northeast Sea of Galilee
Gerasa has a cliff and cave/tombs about 40 meters from shore

JESUS CALMS THE DEMONIAC OF

GADARA 5:1-20
The Demoniac 1-5
His Home 3 = among the Tombs (caves in which the dead are buried)
His Strength 4 = Could not be bound by chains, super human strength
His Torment 5 = Demonstration of Satan's hatred for man in Gods image

GADARA AND THE ACTUAL LOCATION WHERE

JESUS SENT THE DEMONS INTO
A HEARD OF SWINE

Gerasa

JESUS CALMS THE DEMONIAC OF

GADARA 5:1-20
The Encounter 6-12
Worship 6 - Naked, scarred man runs towards them to prostrate before Jesus
Fear 7-8 - Demons shout with loud voice in fear Jesus would send them to abyss
Request 9-12 Not to send them out of the country, geographical limitations?

JESUS CALMS THE DEMONIAC OF

GADARA 5:1-20
The Deliverance 13-20
Jesus gives permission and authoritative command 'GO!' (Mt 8:32)
News spread and people feared the demoniacs new condition as much as old
The man pleaded to go with Jesus while others wanted Jesus to leave them!

JAIRUS SEEKS JESUS 21-24

Jairus finds and pleads with Jesus 21-23
Jairus is likely from synagogue where Jesus healed the withered hand (Mk 3)
Desperation drove Jairus to Jesus God often uses tragedy to draw us

JAIRUS SEEKS JESUS 21-24

Jesus goes with Jairus 24
If Jairus was of those plotting against Jesus, Jesus grace is highlighted
Jesus never rejects a repentant soul change of heart is what He is after

JESUS 25-34
The Touch of Faith 25-29

Jesus leaves to heal the girl but is touched by a desperate woman of faith
She did not think Jesus would notice that she touched his garment
She had suffered much socially and by the bad quack doctors
Amazing contrasts between Jairus and this woman opposite ends of spectrum

JAIRUS' DAUGHTER MEETS

JESUS 35-43
Time for Trust 37-43
The hired mourners remind Jairus that death has struck his home
Jesus takes her hand and commands her to rise as if from sleep
Jesus commanded two things after she rose to life:
No one should know it (imagine the requests to raise the dead)
To give her to eat (Jesus valued the role of food)
