SAFETY
1.4.1
Preliminaries
The parties/residents who are likely to be affected by the construction processes will be notified in advance
and remedial measures such as provision of temporary accesses will be arranged.
The waste disposal areas will be identified and approval sought from the Engineer.
Safety for Workmen
1.5
Necessary safety gear such as gloves, boots, belts and helmets will be provided to relevant
workmen.
Supervisors shall be trained on first aid.
Before operating lifting machinery necessary instructions will be given to operators to ensure
safe and smooth operations
Excavations will be made from top to bottom; i.e. no under cutting will be made
People working with tools such as pick axes, shovels and mamoties will be kept far enough
apart to prevent injury to one another.
No person shall be permitted to remain close to lifting machinery and vehicles during loading
and unloading materials.
A reminder of safety requirements will be given to all workmen by the relevant supervisor
before start of work.
The SOE will carry out routine inspections on implementing of safety measures and issue
instructions as he deem fit, to the officers in charge of any work site to take protective
measures and to avoid inadequacies in respect of safety.
In case of a major accident, the supervisor on-site will give the necessary first aid and the
SOE will be contacted, who will give necessary directions to take the casualties for medical
treatment and to the nearest hospital if necessary
Construction Drawing
Based on the design information provided by the Engineer, construction drawings would be made and
subsequently submitted to the Engineer for review and approval.
1.6
Setting Out
4|Page
The centre line of the building would be established according to site arrangement and all other
setting out work for excavation, formwork etc would be carried out with reference to this center
line.
Timber/steel pegs will be driven at either end of the center line of the bridge at right angle to the
center line of the bridge. Then two off lines will be set out as reference lines for excavation by
driving pegs/ stakes.
The closest temporary bench marks would be selected and a suitable reference level above the
invert would be marked on the pegs at the off lines as guidance for excavation.
The edges of the excavation will be marked on the ground and length of excavation would be
confined to half of the width of the road plus sufficient length as working space.
1.7
Excavation
1.7.1
Excavation would be carried out using back hoe loaders/excavators and other tools such as crow
bar, mamoties etc where necessary.
For this operation, it is expected to deploy a surveyor and a technical officer.
The excavated materials that can be used as backfilling material would be stored at site where
space is available and rest would be transported to disposal areas only if that is classified as
unsuitable by the Engineer.
Having excavated to the required level, the bed would be prepared evenly and smoothly by
manual tamping or using a plate compactor.
To avoid entering storm water to the working area temporary earth drains would be constructed.
All necessary steps regarding safety and convenience of the public and safety of the workers
would be taken in advance.
During this operation safety officer would also be present whenever necessary.
Excavated pits will be covered by tapes all around for safety.
Dewatering
When ground or storm water is encountered during the work dewatering would be carried out using
water pumps or by bailing out or excavation of an outlet.

The reinforcement bars for the base slab and walls will then be placed in position and fixed using gauge
18 binding wire. Cover blocks will be cast with1:2cement sand mix and with suitable thickness
depending on the construction drawings. It will be kept between the reinforcement and form/bed to
ensure the clear cover of 50mm as per the drawing referred to above. Polythene films will be laid on
ground to receive the cut off wall concrete. The forms will be kept firm using external props. Then
internal check according to Check List will be carried out before submitting to the Engineer for the
inspection prior to concreting the base slab as per Specification, 1001-10(a).
1.10 Placing and Compaction of Screed Concrete
1. Concrete will be brought to the site from the mixer by workmen with the use of wheel barrows and/or
pans and will be placed, spread, compacted and levelled to the required thickness on the prepared bed by
skilled workmen.
2. In the event of using ready mix concrete, ready mix shall be brought to location by the truck mixer.
The concrete mix shall be poured to the location through steel guided channel sections, placed, spread,
compacted and levelled to the required thickness on the prepared bed by skilled workmen.
1.11 Base Concrete
Method of placing concrete, equipment, plant and labour will be submitted to the Engineer and approval
will be obtained.
Concrete will be brought to the site from the mixer by workmen with the use of wheel barrows or pans
and maximum transport distance of concrete using wheel barrows and/or pans be 10m and will be
placed direct in the base area by skilled workmen. Ready mix placed concrete will be spread with the use
of shovels. Diameter 40 mm or 25 mm immersion type vibrators will be used to compact during and
immediately after placing concrete. The vibrating pokers will not be kept stationary at a point more than
30 seconds and the points will be about 400 mm apart from each other. Steel tamping rods will be used in
addition to the immersion type vibrators, where approved by the Engineer.
Steel tamping rods [16mm diameter] and/or rubber mallets [for tapping on the forms] may also be used
for ensuring a smooth surface finish. In respect of timings of batching and placement of concrete the
propositions stated under Concrete mix design & Quality Control of the work under the inspection
check list will be followed.
The surface will be cleaned with high pressure water to remove foreign matter, laitance and loose or
porous material as required by the Specification.

The Materials Engineer would take the samples from required materials such as concrete
according to the specified frequency and locations. Other items such as bearings or metal,
expansion joints shall be tested in an Independent laboratory.
Concrete: One set of cubes would be made per 10 cu.m of concrete. At least one sample would
be taken on each day that a particular grade is used. Crushing strength of the concrete cubes
would be tested for the samples at ages of 7 and 28 days. Each sample would be identified by
identification No and it is displayed on the test cubes and a same identification No would be
included in the sample register. The identification tag includes, the date of cast, age of test and
date of test to be performed.
Cubes tested at an age of 28 days cube strength shall conform to the following requirements
1. The average strength determined from any group of four consecutive test cubes shall exceed the
specified characteristic strength by at least 0.5 times the current margin.
2. Each individual test result shall be greater than 85% of the specified characteristic strength.
1.18 Inspection Check list
To ensure that the all activities being performed with the expected quality, an inspection
check list would be filled by QCI for the reconstruction of bridge in preconstruction, during
construction and post construction. The Inspection check list shall include the specific
requirements, safety and environmental measures. Inspection checklist for bridge construction
has been attached herewith.
1.19 Dimension Control
All specified lengths, widths and heights would be properly maintained during construction
and all these dimensions would be checked with the Inspection check list. In case of identifying
the undesirable changes in specified dimensions and even beyond the specified tolerances, the
particular work would be reworked before the subsequent work.
1.20 Back-filling and compaction
8|Page
Backfilling will commence after seven days curing of concrete is completed. Excavated material
will be used for back-filling if suitable. If not approved borrow material will be used for back
-filling. A trial compaction will be carried out to determine the thickness of the layer with the
selected compactor. Back-filling will be carried out in layers with approximately 150 mm
thickness using rammer/ vibrating roller applied to achieve the required specified compaction.
1.21 Clearing the Site
After completing the work all surplus materials will be removed from the work location.
