Film Analysis
INSOMNIA

1. The conventions found in this film opening include multiple

close-up shots of blood dripping onto a piece of cloth, nondiegetic sound with background music, and establishing
shots of mountains covered in snow.
2. The elements in this opening I think represent death in some
way because of the constant showing of blood in the closeups.
3. The credits part integrated with moving images in a very
subtle way. Most of them were viewed over black or white
screens and some during the cut shots of the blood. The font
wasnt very big and most of the time in white.
4. The audience for this film opening is obviously adults. The
movie would not be at all appealing to children due to the
references made throughout.
5. The genre for this film is thriller. It is shown through the nondiegetic background music that creates lots of suspense, and
lots of close-up shots of blood
6. The features of this film opening I would use in my own is
the simplicity of the lettering for the credits. It is simple, but
very effective.

THE EXORCIST

1. The conventions found in this film opening include

establishing shots that show the setting of Northern Iran,
close-up shot of Virgin Marys face, and a long take that
shows a black and what picture of the sun quickly gain color.
Non-diegetic sound of some type of ancient singing.
2. The elements in this opening represent a very suspenseful
opening scene that foreshadows to some significance with
the things that were shown.
3. The credits part integrated with moving images by showing
the name of the movie in a black screen that transitioned
from one shot to another.
4. The audience for this film opening is adults in my opinion
just cause of the suspenseful nature of the opening scene.

5. The genre for this film is Thriller. It is shown through the

conventions shown throughout the beginning and in specific
the sun shot that turns into color.
6. The features of this film opening I would use in my own is
the typography of the film title. The large lettering with red
color that probably represents blood.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

1. The conventions found in this film opening include nondiegetic sounds of music, diegetic sounds of screams, closeups of objects the main character is grabbing, low-key
lighting, and a fast paced editing with lots of cuts.
2. The elements in this opening represent fear. The very dark
setting and the eerie music in the background introduce the
film in a way thats very scary.
3. The credits part integrated with moving images by coming in
throughout every shot. Different shots, had different credits.
4. The audience for this film opening is adults and those who
generally like these type of scary movies. The opening isnt
fit for children for example.

5. The genre for this film is thriller and horror. It is shown

through the techniques used throughout the opening scene.
6. The features of this film opening I would use in my own
opening would be a similar type font.
