Heavy Equipment Operator
Grant County, an Equal Opportunity Employer, located
in Elbow Lake, MN, is currently accepting applications
for the position of a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator. Required qualications include a high school
diploma and experience operating a variety of heavy
machinery. A state of MN Class A CDL drivers license
is required. The position, under the direction of the
Maintenance Foreman, is responsible for maintaining
county roads, assisting in road repairs, and construction activities. Heavy Equipment Operators are responsible for performing general preventative maintenance
to assigned pieces of equipment; assisting project crews
in various maintenance, signing or patching activities;
and snow removal procedures. Knowledge of safety
laws and rules of the road, basic highway construction procedures and principles, and building, road and
bridge maintenance standards and practices preferred.
Experience operating tandem trucks, motor graders,
rollers, backhoes, bulldozers, front end loaders, and
tractors desired.
The Heavy Equipment Operator is a full-time, non-exempt, union position. It is anticipated that initial assignment for this position would be to the Herman shop.
Anticipated beginning pay is $15.90 per hour. Health

Mental Health First Aid: How To Help In A Crisis

Veterans Deserve More Victories At Home

(NAPSA)After the Sept. 11
attacks, Bobby Body enlisted in
the U.S. Army. He was deployed to
Habbaniyah, Iraq, where he joined
a 12-man team that would travel
from Ramadi to Fallujah. Their
mission was to draw insurgents
into the open and detain them. In
broad daylight, in hostile cities,
hunting down the enemy day after
day, Bodys team routinely encountered dangerous confrontations.
Less than a year into his
deployment, Bodys Humvee was
hit by a roadside bomb, severely
injuring his left arm and leg. He
was transported back to the
United States, where he endured
several surgeries. Eventually, his
left leg was amputated. Diagnosed
with post-traumatic stress disorder, Body was thrust into a new
reality.
Bodys story is not that uncommon for Americas veterans. Postservice challenges, visible and
invisible scars from war, can be
devastating and overwhelming. For
many, they last a lifetime. In Bodys
case, he sought support and turned
to competitive weightlifting as a
positive outlet to help cope with
PTSD and the realities of living as
an amputee. With the support of
family and friends plus help from
DAV (Disabled American Veterans),
Body went on to compete in a
World Weightlifting Championship
representing the United States,
competing against able-bodied
weightlifters. Bodys victory was
becoming a weightlifting champion.
Jim Sursely is a husband,
father of four, grandfather, Army
veteran and triple amputee, having lost both legs and his left arm
at age 21 while serving in Vietnam. Despite the challenges of living with his wartime injuries,
Surselys victory is proving there
are no limitations when it comes
to pursuing his lifes passions,
which include spending time with
family, mentoring new generations of disabled veterans, and
bow hunting. Sursely rarely
misses an opportunity to go on a
hunting trip with friends, battle
buddies and younger veterans.

paralyzed from the waist down,

a college degree in fashion was

name) was worried when he
noticed Heather (not her real
name) did not show up to teach
her Sunday school class at their
church. Skipping a commitment
was out of character for his normally reliable and responsible
friend. Knowing that Heather had
been struggling with depression,
Greg texted her to see how she
was doing. Heather replied, indicating that she was really strugglingshe was having a mental
health crisis.
Greg had recently completed a
Mental Health First Aid course
and knew there were specific
actions he could take to help
Heather. Mental Health First Aid
is a mental health literacy program in which everyday people
can learn the signs and symptoms
of behavioral health problems and
crises, as well as ways to support
those who are facing crises, and
where to refer them for appropriate professional care. A growing
trend, more than half a million
people have already been taught
to be first responders in mental
health. These training programs,
offered nationwide in schools,
community centers, churches and
other organizations, are supported
by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Equipped with the lessons he
had learned, Greg decided to visit
Heather. When he arrived at her
apartment, it was clear that
Heather wasnt doing well. She
was unusually reserved and quiet,
and though she said she wanted
to tell her friend how she was feeling, she couldnt find the right
words. To further assess the situation and how he could help, Greg
asked Heather to sit down and
encouraged her to talk with him.
Seeing his friend in distress
was not easy, but Greg drew on
some of the skills he learned in
Mental Health First Aid training.
He went through the recommended steps of helping someone
experiencing a crisis with
Heather. During their talk, Greg
actively listened as she tried to
express her feelings, made sure
she wasnt at risk of hurting herself, and suggested self-care practices such as breathing techniques
and exercising. After talking for a
while, she seemed to feel better.
Greg also helped Heather come up
with a plan to get professional
support from her counseling center on her campus.
Heather is one of the more than
20 percent of young adults, aged 18
to 25, who have had a mental
health condition in the past year,
according to the National Survey
on Drug Use and Health report,
published annually by SAMHSA.

More than half a million Americans have learned to be first

responders for friends and relatives having mental health problemsyou can, too.
Even celebrities who seemingly
have it all can be affected. For
instance, actress Brittany Snow
and singer and actress Demi
Lovato have both spoken openly
about their own mental health
challenges in an effort to improve
public awareness and lessen obstacles to obtaining help. Snow was
awarded a SAMHSA Voice Award
for developing the Love is Louder
movement with The Jed Foundation, a program that has helped
individuals, campuses and communities address behavioral health
challenges nationwide. Similarly,
Lovato received special recognition
at SAMHSAs National Childrens
Mental Health Awareness Day
event for speaking openly of her
mental health challenges and her
need for support, and raising
awareness of mental health issues
affecting young adults.

experiencing a mental health
problem or crisis, Mental Health
First Aid can provide valuable,
initial support. It is a critical
starting point to supporting
someone in crisis and referring
to treatment, if needed. Community members who want to be
prepared to help friends, family
members and neighbors who
may experience mental health

Good habits, good values, good memories

In the summer of 1946
I graduated from 8th grade,
a one room school in Woodbury District #51Washington
County, and soon began
working on a farm in White
Bear, Minnesota. The owner
of the farm was a widow,
Abigail Dorchester, 73 years
old, whom my dad had sometimes worked for when we
still lived in Wisconsin during
the depression. The farm
hands were her brother,
Jack, and her nephew, Norm.
Both were bachelors and well
into their 60s. On this farm
they had some very aggressive geese, chickens, some
penned up pigs, dairy cows,
and some very large work

Each day began for me

when I heard Mrs. Dorchester
mixing pancakes in the kitchen, located just below my bedroom. I immediately got up,
made my bed, got dressed,
etc., and hurried downstairs
to finish making the pancakes, cook some bacon, set
the table, and have breakfast
ready for the men when they
came in from the barn with
the fresh milk. They stored
the mornings milk in a separate refrigerator in the back
entryway. After breakfast we
washed the dishes, made all
of the beds, etc. Every bed in
the house had a feather mattress.
Each day of the week
there were different chores to
do. One day we did laundry...the washer was electric
but the wringer was hand
powered. When the clothes
were washed and rinsed, we
hung them on the clothes line
outside to dry. After they
were dry, Id take them off of
the clothes line, carry them
into the house, and help to
fold them or do any needed

ironing. One day each week

we did the baking, another
day we washed the big
kitchen floor. Abbie would
get on her hands and knees
at one end of the large
room, I would do the same
at the other end, and we
would meet in the middle.
Another day we dusted
all the other rooms in the
house, both furniture and
floors, vacuumed the rugs,
changed the linens on the
beds, etc. Of course, the
kitchen floor was swept
every day.
Every day the chickens
and geese had to be fed,
chicken eggs gathered, and
if someone had ordered
fresh chickens, Id catch
the birds, Mrs. Dorchester
would chop off their heads,
then we would pluck and
clean each one and have
them ready for the customers to pick them up by late
afternoon.
We also spent time
working in the garden,
pulling weeds or harvesting the ripe vegetables, and

I spent more than one day

that summer picking potato
bugs off the potato plants and
placing them into a tin can
that held liquid DDT. It was a
different time.
We fixed lunch and dinner
every day. Mrs. Dorchesters
son was frequently there, and
perhaps some extra hired help
when they were needed. Afterwards, there was always the
cleaning up. Once or twice
during the summer I helped
make hay. My task was to
carry a big pitcher of lemonade out to the field where the
men were working, then ride
back to the house on the top
of a big wagon of hay. Tough
work.
Each day ended when the
supper dishes were done, the
milk had been put through the
cream separator, after I had
carried the skim milk down
to the pig trough, and I had

carefully washed and dried

all the discs in the cream
separator, and put them all
back together in the right
order.
My employer and all of
the people at her farm were
very good to me. They gave
me instructions about what
to do, never raised their
voices or were critical in any
way. They were kind, hardworking people, content
with their lives even though
it was not an easy one.
They did not expect ease. I
worked there until it was
time to go back to school.
My pay for the seven day
work-week was my room
and board plus $3.00. I
spent it all on clothes for
school, with a little shopping help from my mother.
This was our entire lives. No TV, no cell
phones, no Netflix or Pandora, although we did listen
to the news or weather forecasts on the radio. Working
and living with good people
and doing important work
provided a satisfying, productive life. The summer
of 1946 provided me with
a valuable time of learning
good habits, good values,
and many good memories.
