Lesson Plan- Poetry/Literature

LESSON FOCUS:
To be able to identify and understand what the poem is about

YEAR/LENGTH:
Year 3
45minutes

ACHIEVEMENT STANDARD:
Listen to and contribute to conversations and discussions to share information and ideas and negotiate in collaborative
situations (ACELY1676)
Use interaction skills, including active listening behaviours and communicate in a clear, coherent manner using a variety of

Understand how different types of texts vary in use of language choices, depending on their purpose andcontext (for
example, tense and types of sentences)(ACELA1478)
ASSESSMENT/EVIDENCE OF LEARNING:
Reading and Viewing
They read texts that contain varied sentence structures, a range of punctuation conventions, and images that provide additional
information. They identify literal and implied meaning connecting ideas in different parts of a text. They select information, ideas
and events in texts that relate to their own lives and to other texts.
Speaking and Listening
They contribute actively to class and group discussions, asking questions, providing useful feedback and making presentations.

Introduction
Children to open to page 1 of Literature textbooks
(5 minutes)

(10 minutes)

Read poem aloud to children-ensure to stop on key words to explain the


meaning (i.e. fickle, chase, spanned), definitions available in the textbook. At
the end discuss what kind of text that was- was it a poem? How do we know?
Discuss with the children how to play hide and seek, do they know? If not
explain or have a student explain to the class if they know
Name any 5 other games that the children play and enjoy-discuss as a class
Discuss the colours of a rainbow- write them on the board. Children to copy
these in their texbooks
(red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet)
Write on the board:
a) Weather
(i.e. rainy, sunny)
b) Sky
(i.e. clouds, sun)
Children to write this in their text books and below add more relevent words.
Early finishers- draw a picture of a rainbow/Acrostic Poem

Conclusion

5 minutes before end of lesson pack away

(5 minutes)

Once the bell rings ensure that the children pack their things away ready for
the next lesson.
