Literacy- Edward the Emu

Learning Intention:
-Making predictions about the text
Use comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning and begin to
evaluate texts by drawing on a growing knowledge of context, text structures and
language features (ACELY1680)
*Making predictions and asking and answering questions about the text drawing on
knowledge of the topic, subject-specific vocabulary and experience of texts on the
same topic
*Making connections between the text and students own experience and other texts
*Making connections between the information in print and images
-Recall of Content (Sequencing text parts, drawing your favourite scene)
-Reader Response (Children respond in some way to the text)
Draw connections between personal experiences and the worlds of texts, and share
responses with others(ACELT1596)
Listen to and contribute to conversations and discussions to share information and
ideas and negotiate in collaborative situations (ACELY1676)
-Increase vocabulary (Some unfamiliar words present in text)
Recognise high-frequency sight words (ACELA1486)
Discuss how language is used to describe the settings in texts, and explore how the
settings shape the events and influence the mood of the narrative (ACELT1599)

attention

Questions before reading

Hold up and show the book
What do you think this book might be about?
Can you tell me what the title of the book is?
What emotion Edward is showing on the cover
Can you tell me who the author is?
Can you tell me who the illustrator is?

Begin Reading
1st Page: What is the problem that Edward is having? What makes you think that?

Students should understand that the most important idea of the page is that Edward is
not happy with the way he is and thinks that being something else will bring him
happiness
Edward is a zoo animal
Have you ever visited a zoo?
Have you ever see an emu?
Does anyone know what an emu looks like? (show picture)
What animal do you like to see the most?
2nd Page: What do you think Edward is going to do?
4th Page: Edward overheard someone talking.
Can anyone tell me what overheard means? (When someone is talking to someone
else, but you can hear what they are saying)
6th Page: Take a look at Edward and the lion. They are obviously two different
animals. Do you think that they would sound the same as they roar? Which one looks
like he would sound scarier?
7th Page: Someone had the gumption to say that they liked snakes the best.
Can someone tell us what gumption means? (Similar to Courage)
8th Page: What animal did the visitor say was his favourite? Snake
What do you think Edward is going to do next? Go to the snake enclosure
13th Page: Edward clambered back into his cage and found a surprise
What does clambered mean? (To climb)
What did Edward find? (Another emu)
End of story discussion:
