Formula SAE Lincoln

2015 SAE Presidents Message
Welcome to the fourth year of the Formula SAE and Formula SAE Electric
competitions in Lincoln, Nebraska. Formula SAE is steeped in tradition and
competition. Now in its 34th year, Formula SAE provides the real-world
challenges of systems engineering, design and problem solving, along with
the teaming challenges of collaboration and cooperation.
The Formula Electric competition, in its third year, offers a unique set of skills
and learning opportunities related to the burgeoning electric powertrain
technologies.
In short, Formula SAE competitions, along with all of the SAE Collegiate
Design Series competitions, provide the skills and experiences needed for a
well-rounded engineering education.
In addition to learning, Formula SAE also provides a unique form of
competition. This week, collegiate engineering students from many different
nations will compete in a series of static and dynamic events designed
to challenge their engineering, problem-solving and teamwork skills. The
students will work hard and compete to win. Some will win first place, others
will not. But all will leave here winners because they will be better engineering
students.
Good luck to everyone competing this week. The experiences you gain will
last throughout your lives. Also, I want to thank everyone for their hard work,
support and participation; its because of you these competitions are such a
success.

Sincerely,

Dr. Richard W. Greaves

President, SAE International

Concept of the Competition

The Formula SAE Series competitions challenge teams of university undergraduate and
graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small, formula style,
competition vehicle. To give teams the maximum design flexibility and the freedom to express
their creativity and imaginations there are very few restrictions on the overall vehicle design.
Teams typically spend eight to twelve months designing, building, testing and preparing
their vehicles before a competition. The competitions themselves give teams the chance
to demonstrate and prove both their creation and their engineering skills in comparison to
teams from other universities around the world. Registered for this event are 80 Internal
Combustion Teams and 20 Electric Teams from colleges and universities. The end result is
a great experience for young engineers in a meaningful engineering project as well as the
opportunity of working in a dedicated team effort.
For the purpose of this competition, the students are to assume that a manufacturing firm has
engaged them to produce a prototype car for evaluation as a production item. The intended
sales market is the nonprofessional weekend competitor. Therefore, the car must have very
high performance in terms of its acceleration, braking, and handling qualities. The car must
be low in cost, easy to maintain, and reliable. In addition, the cars marketability is enhanced
by other factors such as aesthetics, comfort and use of common parts. The manufacturing
firm is planning to produce four (4) cars per day for a limited production run. The challenge
to the design team is to design and fabricate a prototype car that best meets these goals and
intents. Each design will be compared and judged with other competing designs to determine
the best overall car.
Over the course of three days, the cars are judged in a series of static and dynamic events
including: technical inspection, cost, presentation, and engineering design, solo performance
trials, and high performance track endurance. These events are scored to determine how well
the car performs. In each event, the manufacturing firm has specified minimum acceptable
performance levels that are reflected in the scoring equations.

Static Events:
Design Report: The students explain their constructive solutions to a jury of experts from
the automotive and motorsport industries in report and discussion. The concept of the
design is to evaluate the engineering effort that went into the design of the car and how
the engineering meets the intent of the market. The car that illustrates the best use of
engineering to meet the design goals and the best understanding of the design by the team
members will win the design event.
Cost Report: The students are to assume that a serial production of 1000 cars a year will
follow the prototype. The cost calculation is discussed with a jury based on a report. The
objective of the event is for the participants to learn and understand the manufacturing
techniques and processes of some of the components that they have chosen to purchase
rather than fabricate themselves.
Presentation: The objective is to evaluate the teams ability to develop and deliver a
comprehensive business case that will convince the executives of a fake manufacturing firm
that the teams design best meets the demands of the amateur weekend competition market
and that it can be profitably manufactured and marketed.

Dynamic Events:

The following points are possible:

Acceleration: The cars are evaluated on their accelerating

abilities from a standing start over a distance of 75 meters.
Autocross: The objective is to evaluate the cars
maneuverability and handling qualities on a tight course
without the hindrance of competing cars. The course will
combine the performance features of acceleration, braking
and cornering into one event. The results of the Autocross
scores determine the starting order for endurance.
Skid-Pad: The objective is to measure the cars cornering
ability on a flat surface while making a constant-radius turn.
The course will be a pair of concentric circles in shape of the
number 8; the cars demonstrate how good lateral forces can
be absorbed (up to 1.4g).

Jayhawk Motorsports Combustion

The University of Kansas Formula SAE Racing team, Jayhawk Motorsports, is

proud to release the next vehicle in the programs legacy. Since 1994, Jayhawk
Motorsports has accumulated 9 top ten finishes. This recent success has placed
the program 8th in the FSAE World rankings. The 2015 team consists of a record
sized and experienced roster.
With over seventy students involved in the project a strong team structure is
necessary. Students are divided into sub teams based on different systems of the
vehicle. These teams include chassis, suspension, aerodynamics, combustion
powertrain, electric powertrain, and testing. Each team completes their individual
systems to coincide with common team goals.

University of Kansas - Lawrence

Texas A & M University

Texas A&M Univ College Station

The philosophy of the 2015 Texas A&M Racing team has been to design a
drivers car. If the drivers can maximize their seat time in a comfortable cockpit,
then they can perform at their best. A drivers car requires a balance between
the engineers ideal vehicle and driver ergonomics. In order to design around
this philosophy, priority was given to: (1) safety, (2) reliability, (3) performance, (4)
maintainability, (5) adaptability, and (6) practicality.
We would like to thank our families and sponsors for supporting us throughout
this racing season. None of this would have been possible without you!

These goals were established early to provide team members with sufficient
time to successfully research, design, analyze, manufacture, and test all vehicle
components. Key areas include performance and efficiency, reliability, weight
reduction, driver ergonomics, manufacturing, and testing. An all new monocoque
chassis featuring a new suspension and aerodynamic setup driven by a powerful
engine package are the results of the 2015 teams determination for a successful
competition season.

Spartan Racing

Spartan Racing is proud to introduce SR-7, our seventh Formula SAE vehicle.
Weve returned to compete this year with more motivation, more speed, and
bright car. SR-7 is an evolution of the lightening-fast SR-6, including electropneumatic paddle shifters, a powerful and reliable Honda F4i engine, and a full aerodynamic package. While focusing upon a strong finish we have also addressed reliability concerns that we had with SR-6 in addition to better understanding proven
systems . SR-7 sets a new bar for us at Spartan Racing, and we are excited to
share it with all of our friends here at FSAE Michigan 2015.

Michigan State Univ

Michigan State Universitys Formula SAE Team would like to present this years
car, the SR-15. The SR-15 utilizes a hybrid front monocoque and rear space
frame chassis to provide packaging, cooling, and accessibility advantages. A Honda CBR600RR engine is incorporated to provide reliability and quick acceleration
with a 0-60 time of only 3.4 seconds. Aerodynamic devices such as a front wing,
rear wing, and undertray were designed to generate 330 pounds of downforce at
60 mph, significantly improving handling capabilities. Michigan States newest vehicle also possesses a fully tunable suspension system that was designed around
the 18 Hoosier tire. Over 60 sensors are integrated to monitor vehicle and driver
performance. Additional features include electro-pneumatic paddle shifting, traction control, and launch control to create a simple human-machine interface.
We thank Michigan State University and all of our sponsors, friends, and families
for their contributions and support towards this invaluable learning experience.

This years car, UTR-21, was built around simplicity and reliability while also
taking on some new features. Utilizing tyre consortium data as a starting point,
UTR-21 features a rigid tubular chassis, CBR600 F4i, and hlins shocks backed
up with extensive durability testing. Serviceability and weight reduction were
also considered with every component designed. With a large amount of time
dedicated to testing and refining we hope to have an all around reliable and fine
tuned car for competition.

UC Berkeley Formula SAE

UC Berkeleys newest car B15 maintains the design philosophy of keeping the car
small and light. Adding onto that, the team decided early on to increase performance by adding an aerodynamics package comprised of a front and rear wing to
the car. Both wings have adjustable angles of attack so that we may tune our new
aerodynamics package as we learn more through testing.

University of California - Berkeley

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

MRacing

The 2015 MRacing team designed a car with weight savings in mind. Emphasis
was also placed on aerodynamics. All we can say is, Much wings, such wow!

Due to the increased downforce on the car we chose to switch from a spool to a
limited slip differential. We chose a Drexler LSD due to its adjustability and light
weight of 4.8 lbs. We adapted the 4340 steel tripod housings designed for the
Drexler to continue using our spring steel flex disc CV joints, saving 5 lbs over the
OTS tripod, tulip, and steel axle configuration.
We use a Swissauto 250 go-kart engine due to its low weight, high stock output,
and low fuel consumption. The torque peak was moved towards the clutch engagement zone for better launches and max torque was increased to 23 ft-lbs.
B15s suspension was redesigned using our CnAy model and points sensitivities
from our lap simulator. Additionally, the suspension team designed around our
aerodynamics package, carbon fiber axles, and flex discs.

Speed Devils

Arizona State Universitys 2015 entry into the Formula SAE Lincoln competition
is the culmination of the hard work of over 50 engineering students during the
period of two years. The goal for our team was to design a space frame, fourcylinder engine formula car with a focus on simplistic design as well as handling
performance while taking advantage of the manufacturing facilities available to
us. Though lightweight characteristics were sought after in our designs, stiffness
took priority in suspension, chassis, and braking system components.
In addition, our team has recently undergone massive restructuring. When we
started this build two years ago, our team consisted of a handful of dedicated
members who have helped build this team and club into what it is now, a structured organization with the goals of exposing students to engineering. We are all
very proud of this car and the work our organization has done in the past years,
and have learned many design concepts, management processes, and racing
dynamics, which we will continue to improve on with future generations.

Huskie Motorsports

This year, Huskie Motorsports has focused its vehicle design upon two simple
concepts, safety and reliability. Certain aspects of past cars have been poorly
designed, or proven unreliable through testing and time, and the teams eleventh
car seeks to address these issues.
Something often overlooked in student design competitions is driver safety, and
to address this issue, Huskie Motorsports has put a large focus upon driver safety
this year. Safety features include a high quality 6-point Schroth racing harness,
ceramic header coating, and firewall insulation above and beyond rule requirements.
Reliability of FSAE vehicles is also often an issue, and has caused the team to accept certain small reductions in performance if it means the vehicle will be more
likely to complete endurance. You cant win if you dont finish.
With these two ideologies in mind, Huskie Motorsports hopes to achieve their best
result since the teams creation in 2000, aiming for a top twenty finish.

Cyclone Racing

CR-20 is Iowa State Universitys 20th car to compete in the Formula SAE series.
For CR-20, emphasis was placed on the continued improvement of all systems from the previous generations. Reducing the number and complexity of
components to decrease manufacturing time, improved reliability, and refinement
of the engine system was also strongly emphasized. To increase manufacturing simplicity, all 2D parts were water jet or laser cut. This years car continues
on 10 wheels and features unique a-arms that are machined from aluminum
plates. The powertrain remains largely the same as last year as we continue to
use the Yamaha YFZ450R engine. Our intake/restrictor is 3D printed in Stratasyss
proprietary high strength material, ULTEM 9085.The pedal mounts have 5 of
adjustability to accommodate a range of driver heights. The use of aircraft fabric
bodywork eliminated the need for composites molds and saved time, money and
weight.

California State University - Long Beach

Long Beach Racing, Inc.

The CFR15 race car is the 6th vehicle produced by the modern era of Concordia
Formula Racing. This vehicle was designed as an iteration of the CFR14 vehicle
which competed at FSAE Michigan last summer. The primary design goals for
CFR15 were to improve on reliability, increase torque in the lower rpm range
and implement a full aerodynamic package with an active rear wing. In order
to provide a driveable torque curve, intake and exhaust runners were tuned,
camshaft timing was optimized, and fuel map was optimized using an engine
dyno as well as on track testing. The focus of the aerodynamic package was to
produce maximal aerodynamic downforce with minimal drag and minimal added
weight. Extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis was performed in
order to optimize the design. The rear wings main element flap is activated by
a pneumatic cylinder to change its angle of attack and reduce drag on straight
portions of the track. The wing is activated via an Arduino depending on the cars
current conditions, steering, throttle, etc. Tire data was analysed and used to create a simulation model to better determine suspension setups and increase the
performance of the vehicle.

The goal for the 2015 Long Beach Racing vehicle was to improve on all the lessons learned from the previous vehicle. As a relatively young team, we wanted to
create a reliable entry-level vehicle that was easy to drive and maintain. Reducing
weight for the 2015 vehicle was one of our biggest concerns along with making
the vehicle handle better. We decided to stick with the CBR600 engine since we
have had success with it over the last couple of years and know it is reliable and
requires low maintenance.

Cal Poly Racing

Cal Poly Racing is proud to present our 2015 competition racecar.

The hybrid-monocoque chassis is built around a Yamaha YFZ-450R engine.
Power is transferred to the wheels via chain drive, through a Drexler limited slip
differential. Billet aluminum uprights connect the 13 center locking wheels to a
double A-arm suspension setup. Pushrod actuation in the rear and pullrod actuation coupled with a front ARB keeps the car balanced and tunable. Improved aerodynamics keep the car planted to the ground. A MoTeC advanced data acquisition
system has allowed the team to push the car to its limits, while a professional
grade electronics system has improved vehicle reliability. Stopping the car are
four outboard Brembo brake gripping custom ductile-iron rotors.

The UCI 2015 racecar team is competing in the 2015 FSAE competition hosted
in Lincoln, Nebraska. Because the team competed in last years FSAE Electric
competition, constructing an internal combustion car is new for the current team
members. A design, with inspiration drawn from past cars, was made that was
feasible with the given constraints and the teams limitations. The goals for this
design was to create a car that had a feasible manufacturing method, an even
weight distribution, and as low of a cost as possible while still remaining competitive.

Titan Racing

This year Titan Racing Team will be continuing its development of a carbon fiber
monocoque and rear carbon sub-frame box. Reducing mass through further
analyis and testing has been on of the teams high priorities. As a third year carbon monocoque team, Titan Racing built a chassis dyno to test and further design
a lighter and more rigid chassis. The Major changes to this years vehicle include
a drexler differential, and the addition of an aerodynamic package. A two element
front and rear wing will be providing the car with down-force.

Matador Motorsports

The 2015 CSUN car features numerous improvements from previous years
designs. In the preliminary design phase, a design matrix that featured 10 independent design criteria, along with high-level simulation, were utilized to make
decisions. The major decisions made were to minimize weight, reach a power
goal of 50HP, and implement the first aerodynamic package at CSUN. A strict
design and manufacturing timeline allowed for additional testing and validation of
our designs.
Refining the design of existing components on the 2014 vehicle allowed a further
reduction in mass, which helped to offset the mass of the aero package. The
design of the aero package was driven by reaching downforce targets, minimizing
drag, and minimizing mass. These factors facilitate increased performance of the
vehicle.
Other major design changes include: a Quaife torque-biasing differential, a decoupled front roll hoop and front suspension box, a further reclined driver position,
lowered front and main roll hoops, and a push rod suspension front and rear.
Formula SAE prepares us for the real world, and we are eager to meet the new
generation of engineers who will be working with us in the future!

Shocker Racing

Westerns 2015 FSAE competition vehicle, Viking 58 (V58), features an all new
3/5ths composite - 2/5ths steel chassis, a new powertrain including drastically
redesigned intake and exhaust systems, and the addition of air dampers and
carbon fiber suspension members to meet this years competition goals. These
systems were intended to work in coordination with this years addition of a full
aerodynamics package, a decision driven by lap simulation, physical testing, and
points analysis. The team decided to produce an upper echelon car to showcase
the latest technology and increase interest in both the vehicle and program.

Shocker racing is proud to introduce SR-15, Shocker Racings 7th car since the
start of the completion series, is most advanced car to date. After a tough year
weve returned to compete with more passion, enthusiasm, and drive to win.
SR-15 incorporates the high points of the already impressive SR-14, including
custom made dry sump system, optimized custom intake and exhaust system,
and light weight space frame design. To improve the SR-15s overall performance
and reliability weve added push button shifting, launch control, internal oil pressure regulation, and a more simplistic and optimized suspension package. SR-15
will be the new standard against which all other cars will be measured.

Last year we focused on the reliability of our car. Between improvements on powertrain and the introduction of aerodynamic structures to the vehicle we produced
the car that took us furthest in competition in our history.
This year, once again our focus was on reliability. USC Racing made adjustments
to the aspects of our car that contributed to our shortcomings last year. We tuned
our powertrain via an engine dyno, and made adjustments to its powertrain to
ensure its reliability during competition. Additionally we made improvements to
our aerodynamic setup switching the sizing of our front and rear elements from 2
and 2 to 2 and 3 respectively - we improved downforce to drag relationships with
the adjustment.

The 2015 Syracuse University Formula SAE Team is a first year competing team
entered in the Lincoln, Nebraska SAE design challenge. Our team is formed of a
variety of engineering students and others from a multitude of backgrounds who
collectively have the drive and dedication to see our car to and through competition. The main design goal being the car must complete all dynamic events in the
Lincoln, NE competition. We almost exclusively built all components in shop due to
financial limits as well as a desire to give all members experience with machining.
The engine chosen for the 2015 competition was that from a 2006 Suzuki GSXR600 K6 sport bike The primary reasons for this selection are that the parts are
widely available and affordable. We designed our vehicle with minimal cost and
ease of manufacturing in mind. Ultimately, being a rookie team we made all our
design decisions on our own and are proud of what we were able to accomplish.

Husker Motorsports

In only its fourth year of existence the Husker Motorsports team established high
goals for 2015. One goal for the 2015 car was to make minimal changes to the
previous generation in order to focus on driver training and extensive testing and
tuning of the new car. Husker 04 is a robust car with a steel tube space frame,
a 2009 Kawasaki zx6r 600cc engine, and an all carbon fiber body. Some key
features include a data acquisition system, electronic push-button shifting, and
launch control with an automatic shift system. The major addition for this year
was the design of an aerodynamic undertray-rear diffuser. This is the first year
that Husker Motorsports decided to begin preliminary research into the benefits of
aerodynamics for the FSAE car. It was determined that the first step in developing
and aerodynamics package would be to design an aerodynamic undertray-rear
diffuser that would reduce the overall drag force on the car and also create a
small amount of downforce. Steps were also taken to improve upon some of
the designs from the previous year that proved to be less reliable. The Husker
04 has the highest potential for success of any previous car produced by Husker
Motorsports.

Longhorn Racing

Our 2015 car is a design iteration of our successful 2011 car. This means a
return to our 4-cylinder roots with the CBR600RR. This power plant connects to
our Torsen II differential via chain. The differential also mounts our single rear
inboard brake. A PE3 ECU with custom mapping controls this powertrain. The car
features a push-rod actuated double unequal length A-arm suspension with front
and rear ARBs. This suspension connects to custom aluminum uprights and hubs.
Our chassis is completed by a mild steel tubular space frame. A carbon fiber front
wing, rear wing, and under-tray provide downforce, while a sidepod shrouds the
radiator. Driver equipment includes a mechanically connected shifter and clutch,
dial and digital tachometers with a shift light, and an adjustable pedal assembly.
This design gives a very strong foundation for future iterations and improvements
by our team.

This, our thirteenth car is the conclusion of experience, earned by our hits and
mistakes; the most rigid chasis weve ever built, the lightest intake system so far

REIB and a complete evoultion in our drivetrain system.
This our best project so far and its going to be legen... wait for it...dary, legendary... for us.

UND FSAE

The 2014-2015 University of North Dakota Formula SAE team is comprised of a

group of eleven students who are all new to FSAE. 2015 will be the eighth year
that UND has competed in Formula SAE events since our debut in 2003. In our
last 13 years, we have competed seven times, and have learned many things that
will help us during this years competition. Last year, we focused on design optimization which has helped this years team, and will help future teams to come.
For this year, we focused on getting the most power out of our naturally aspirated
system that we possibly could. We achieved this goal by designing a new intake
system and performing extensive dyno and real-world testing. The new intake
design allows for an equal distribution of air to all the runners for increased
performance and reliability. After testing, we are confident that we are getting the
best performance out of our CBR-600-F4i engine that we possibly can. Our team
aspires to be the first team in UNDs history to be in the top 20. We want to thank
all of our sponsors for their continued support.

IPN RACING TEAM

As our first year competing IPN Racing Team established as its main design goals:
Safety, drivability, robustness and flexibility. CFD simulation, along with other tools
like Product Lifecycle Management and FEA analysis help us predict our cars
performance.
Bahlam is powered by a modified Yamaha R6S 600 engine for improving its
performance with a low fuel consumption. A chromoly spaceframe ensures low
weight, without sacrificing structural stiffness and protecting drivers integrity.
And as our key feature, we developed Colibr (hummingbird) transmission module,
which includes a completely electronic shifter and a servo assisted clutch, giving
the driver the unique experience of choosing between two modes automatic and
manual.

Hello!
We participate from Japan.
We make a new car from a new concept with new team members every year.
Our concept of car this year is a high-speed turning machine, because we think
speed in the corners can win the race.
We made a lightweight car, and achieved high speed turning ability. 1st place at
the skid pad, and placing in the top 10 overall. Therefore, we made our frame not
steel but aluminum. As a result, we could make it 4 kg lighter than a steel frame.
The engine fuel supply apparatus was changed from a carburetor to electronic
fuel injection, to improve the engine power.
We are determined to achieve the best result possible at FSAE Lincoln.

Wildcat Formula Racing

Wildcat Formula Racing is now on its second generation of its new stressed
engine design in the 14-15 season of Formula SAE. The WF 15 has undergone
frame and suspension design that combine enhanced ergonomics along with
a balanced chassis to improve driver confidence and drivability. Powertrain has
also been further developed, including a noteworthy transition to cleaner, highperformance ethanol fuel. Many of the components on the WF 15 have been
lightened significantly; the current drivetrain, suspension, frame and body panels
are all lighter than in previous designs. The body panels and nose cone are now
all carbon fibre, which has been designed to house the electronics and reduce
drag on the side pods. Nearly all hardware has been changed to metric to simplify
services. The team has a focused and dedicated approach, which has led to time
and effort to be, better spent on important areas.

The aim of this project is to design the chassis and suspension from ground zero,
considering all of the obstacles in the journey, and all the time become attached
to SAE international rules.
Our design is based in an old FSAE 2006, where we got close to it and do a lot of
improvements to the chassis structure, suspension, and center of mass.
The chassis consists out of two nearly symmetrical halfs made out of AISI A53B
1 inch inner diameter and 2.9 wall thickness for the front and main hoops, and
for the rest of bracing and members of 1.9 wall thickness. The steering wheel
system is attached to the top of the front hoop. A Yamaha R6 is engine is used to
drive the rear wheels using a chain. The suspension system is equipped with two
monoshocks. Front and rear roll stiffness is added using helical springs.

USF Racing

F2015 represents the tenth Formula SAE vehicle produced by USF Racing since
beginning the FSAE series in 2005, and is the fifth evolution of our current design
concept. The following goals were created by the team preceding the design
process: improvement of serviceability, further development of an aerodynamic
wing package, and an overall weight of 330 lb (to match the weight of our lightest
non-aero car, F2013). We placed an emphasis on validating design simulation
through real-world testing. Based off of the successes of previous models, F2015
runs a naturally aspirated Suzuki LT-R 450 single cylinder engine with bore and
stroke modifications, steel axles, and 10-inch wheels. Integrating last years
chassis packaging with improvements in the suspension and engine systems, the
refinement of an aerodynamics package, as well as building on a successful history in static events, we hope we have created a car which continues to perform
aggressively across all events in the FSAE competition.

Mizzou Racing

Mizzou Racing is proud to introduce our 2015 entry into Formula SAE. Building on almost 30 years of Mizzou Formula SAE history, we have designed a car
that champions reliability and drivability, while also embracing creativity and
innovation, testing our engineering limits. Sarting with the bullet-proof Honda CBR
600RR, we have produced a formidable power train that reliably produces a supply of relentless bur controllable power. We also focused heavily on putting that
power to use. The use of Hoosier tires demands that our suspension be highly
optimized to squeeze out every last bit of performance, so a premium was placed
on maintaining optimum camber angles, and reducing tire load fluctuation.

Knights Racing

Knights Racing from UCF focused on designing a conservative and inexpensive

race car for the new year. During manufacturing and assembly, a high quality
control was maintained in order to mitigate potential issues.
The Suspension was designed to be easy to manufacture and replace for the
weekend autocrosser through the use of all steel suspension arms and rods
with welded bearing cups and steel inserts. The Chassis is a 4130 Steel Tube
chassis and was carefully jigged and welded while using the engine as a stressed
member during applied load. The Powertrain was advanced through the use of
a Stand-alone ECU for tunability and Data Acquisition. The intake manifold is
constructed out of sheet metal along with a 4-1 exhaust manifold. The wiring harness was designed to be reliable and withstand the harshness of a motorsports
environment. Drivetrain was developed closely with Powertrain through the use
of lap simulation. A strong focus on driveability for the weekend autocrosser was
considered.
The car was intended to become the foundation for future years with a strong

The design goals for the 2014-2015 K-State FSAE team include improving reliability and decreasing weight. The team feels as though they could have been
much more competitive in recent years had they finished all events and had fewer
breakdowns. Having not finished an endurance event since 2008, this team is
poised to improve on last years foundation to ensure a quality performance.

years, and has risen to ranks of 3rd in Michigan and 62nd in the world. Achieving
a top 10 finish in the Endurance Event would mark a huge success for the 2015
season. By definition, a car successful in the Endurance Event is one that does
not suffer in any other area of competition. The following design criteria were the
focus for the 2015 season: reliability, packaging, and weight reduction. Dedication and improvement is highlighted through simulation and analytic methods
used in the design of components. Previously, drivability has been overlooked
due to difficulty in quantifying changes and their effect. Several key aspects were
determined to have an impact on drivability: engine output, vehicle response, and
ergonomics.

Terps Racing

The University of Maryland Terps Racing Formula SAE teams 2015 vehicle, TR15,
was designed with emphasis on reliability, simplicity, performance, and safety.
These primary goals were achieved with a four-cylinder engine, aerodynamic
effects that included front and rear wings with an undertray, and a steel space
frame. Design choices for the frame structure, front suspension, steering, and
seating were largely dictated by the layout of the wings and undertray diffusers.
Track width and wheelbase were determined using the lap simulations and CFD
modeling. Lastly, horsepower, weight, and fuel economy tradeoffs were analyzed
using the lap simulations to further evaluate design decisions.

UC Davis Formula Racing

Our second entry into the Formula SAE Electric series is a complete revision of
our first vehicle with major developments in powertrain, vehicle packaging, and
suspension.
The most significant visual change is a 30 inch reduction in overall length. This
primarily is achieved by shifting the accumulator forward in the chassis and
reducing the sprocket-to sprocket distance. This distance reduction is allowed
by a newly developed coaxial, planetary speed reduction device. Power is routed
from that through a secondary chain-based reduction to the wheels with a Torsen
differential.
The goals of the new suspension are to make the car easy to drive and provide a
high level of maneuverability and stability during acceleration, braking, and hard
cornering. The suspension is also designed to interface well with the powertrain
and chassis. Another major goal was to reduce the vehicles turn radius from last
years. This year, we implemented a lower multilink to reduce the turn radius to
13.5 feet while maintaining a small scrub radius.

The major features of the UMSAE Polar Bear Racings 2015 Formula Electric
model are summed up as follows. The vehicle is built around on a strong, 41
kg steel chromoly tube frame clad with expanded aluminium foil impregnated
composite panels. These panels were identified as the most elegant means of
meeting the stringent electrical grounding requirements. The whole car is powered
by a 263 V lithium ion accumulator, feeding into a BAMOCAR-D3 motor controller
and finally to a three-phase, 240 Nm (peak, for 5 seconds) EMRAX 228 brushless
motor. This power plant is expected to bring the vehicle up to a maximum speed
of 130 km/h.Additional features include dedicated cores from Parallax Propeller
micro-controllers for the throttle and brake position sensors as well as a dash
mounted Android smartphone for vehicle telemetry. All indications suggest that
the model has met its design goals, even performing above and beyond expectations in some areas.

UWashington eFSAE

For the 2015 UWashington FSAE team, an iterative approach was implemented.
After many drastic design changes in 2014, this year the team focused on fine
tuning the previous years design based on data collected from the 2014 combustion car and new analyses. This has resulted in a combustion car and electric car
with much greater reliability and more testing time compared to previous years.
Design Objectives
Design every part and assembly as a system, with overall competition points
in mind; team direction, design compromises, and decisions are made accordingly
Reduction of part and assembly weight through improved understanding of
load cases and analyses
Utilize as much old and new test data as possible to validate theoretical
models and concepts
Provide and utilize ample testing time to extract maximum vehicle performance reliability

The overall concept of the MY15 vehicle is a spaceframe construction powered

by two electric motors that drive each of the rear wheels independently. The initial
decision to produce a spaceframe allows the team to draw its experience in chassis design and fabrication in order to focus the limited team resources on creating
a reliable and safe electrical powertrain and vehicle control system. However
many of the design choices from previous years were examined and evaluated
to take advantage of good designs and avoid pitfalls. Before construction began,
a full-car CAD model was created, and then students manufactured parts using
proper engineering drawings to ensure that all parts integrated with the rest of the
vehicle.

Formula Electric

For the past three years Missouri S&T Formula Electric has worked on designing
and manufacturing a car to compete in the Formula Electric SAE design competition. Using their time and resources, a car was designed to minimize weight while
achieving acceleration within the traction limits. Having been established and
developed independently and with no prior affiliations to the combustion team on
campus, a vast amount of effort was placed into designing an original drivetrain
to take advantage of a fully electrical system as opposed to adopting one similar
to those used by combustion teams. This additional effort is justified, in that the
drivetrain is required to perform reliably and viewed as one of the most critical
design components. The extra years of refinements during the cars development
period will hopefully allow several parts of the design to carry through to successive cars and thus diverting future focus to redesigning systems that do not
perform satisfactorily.

Jayhawk Motorsports Electric

The University of Kansas Formula SAE Racing team, Jayhawk Motorsports, is

proud to release the next electric vehicle in the programs legacy. Since 2011,
Jayhawk Motorsports has accumulated two top five finishes. The 2015 team
consists of a record sized and experienced roster.
With over seventy students involved in the project a strong team structure is
necessary. Students are divided into sub teams based on different systems of the
vehicle. These teams include chassis, suspension, aerodynamics, electric powertrain, combustion powertrain, and testing. Each team completes their individual
systems to coincide with common team goals.
These goals were established early to provide team members with sufficient
time to successfully research, design, analyze, manufacture, and test all vehicle
components. Key areas include performance and efficiency, reliability, weight
reduction, driver ergonomics, manufacturing, and testing. An all new monocoque
chassis featuring a new suspension and aerodynamic setup driven by a powerful
motor combination are the results of the 2015 teams determination for a successful competition season.

motor with a high power-to-weight ratio; steel space frame chassis with carbon
fiber panels for a high rigidity-to-weight ratio; and in-house manufactured custom
aluminum wheel centers.
Carletons design goals emphasize a balance between performance and costeffective manufacturing. To achieve the design goals, a closed loop design process is used to create an environment of continuous improvement. Design criteria
are based on the lessons learned in testing and past competitions. A wheels-in
design approach is supported by Creo Parametric solid modelling, Creo Simulate
FEA, and Creo Mechanism dynamic simulation. Vehicle testing is used to verify
criteria compliance and provide feedback for future design work, thus completing
the design cycle.
