Personal response based on the short story-TSM
The Sound Machine, a story about Klausner, a man who works on a sound machine and he is a man who thinks
that pants can feel the cuts made by human by making sounds. Of course Klausners strange discovery is
unacceptable and ridiculous for the people around him such as Mrs Saunders and Dr Scott. Why do Mrs. Saunders
and Dr Scott think that Klaunser is crazy? Is it just because he thinks different from others and his idea is
distinctive? People seem to have problems accepting new ideas because new ideas usually clash with peoples belief
and new ideas contrast with our common perceptions toward certain things. Not only the characters in the story,
Mrs. Klausner and Dr. Scott have this problem but also ourselves. We tend to reject ideas that distinct from our
tradition. This is the mistake that we should vanish from now because creative ideas should not be discouraged. We
need these ideas to improve ourselves and make this world a better place. Therefore we need to be open-minded
and flexible in accepting fresh ideas. The sensitivity Klausner has for the plants tell us the importance of looking
after the plants as they are living things. It is noble to be sensitive to the pain of all the pain of all living things. In
our culture, we are taught to treat all living things with care without harming them. Hence we should repair what
damage we have already done to nature and have the feeling of love for all the living things including plants. We
need to respect other creatures life in order to live harmoniously in this world as what emphasize in our culture.
THE NECKLACE
Every student has their own interpretation and view when they read a short story. The selected short stories for
malaysian secondary school is form to generate the creative thinking and humanities value among our students.
One of the short story that give deep impact on me is 'The Necklace'. For me the necklace is all about be true,
honest, down to earth and gratefullness. Mathilde waste 10 years of her life by working to death just to replace
Madam Forestier's necklace that she borrowed and loss in a ball. The truth is, the necklace is not as expensive as
she thought. Mathilde should be honest to Madam Forestier at the first place that she loss the necklace and she
also has to realize her and her husband ability in spending their money.
I can say that this story shows the women's lust for wealthy. I think ball is very important occasion for french
women in that century, maybe it the only way they have their excitment. But i'm sure not all women like mathilde.
name..hehe
) He did everything just to make his wife happy. Even he did not mad when Mathilde was hanging
around with another men until 4a.m in the morning!!! ( Malays please don't do that!!)
A question I would ask to
women out there, if u were Mathilde, and you know will lost the borrowed necklace, will you drag your husband
into the matter too?
The Drover's Wife offers us a story that take place in western and how they live their routine life. The story
happened on one day where the father went out droving for a long time. So, the mother (the drover's wife) and her
children lived on their own. Their home located in somewhere that far away from other houses and surrounded by
bushes. So, if anything happen they need to depend on their own family members. From this story, we know the
wife, the mother, the woman is trying to protect her family, her children. Although, she is a woman, at any cost she
will make sure of her family safety. She is a very brave woman.
Woman even though they are physically weak than man, they can become stronger in desperate situations like this
because they want to protect their love ones. But, I wonder why people nowadays willing to throw their baby away,
we always heard and read about baby found dead in garbage, floating in the river etc. Where is the love of a
mother?
Is it extinct in their heart? Poor these little babies who are born to live like other normal baby but their
own mother (the one who give birth to them who actually the one who will raise them with love) killed them! Owh,
its to harsh.. I mean end their children life. How could they do that?
Dear sha_akma.............
As a whole,i agree with your opinion saying that Malthide is a selfish lady as she never take her husband's feelings
into account. She does whatever that she thinks is good for her. pleasures her. But, when you said that "if she
could realise it earlier, she won't have to suffer that way," i think i have a different opinion. It's true that she went
through a tough time, working hard to pay off her debt. But,undeniably, she learned a lot from that experience.
She learned to be independent, realistic and whatnot. Just imagine if she did not go through that tough time, or
perhaps if she did not lose the necklace. Do you think she will be able to turn over a new leaf? Therefore, if we
were to look from a different perspective, that's not really a suffering. In fact, it's a learning path. Half glass full ?
Or half glass empty? It all depends on how we look it...
I'm not saying that we dont have to be grateful. it's not like that.

The Drover's Wife by Roald Dahl is a story about a drover's wife whom was left by his husband and lived in a tworoomed house surrounded by stunted , rotten, native apple trees. She lived with 4 children ; 2 daughters and 2
sons. One day, her children were playing about the house. Suddenly, they saw a snake. The snake went into a
wood-heap and later went into the house. This caused the woman to feel fear because she remembered that a son
of her brother-in-law had been bitten by a snake and died. Therefore, she did a few things to protect her child
while her black, yellow-eyed dog, Alligator, watched the crack. Both of them were waiting for the snake to come out
and then, at the break of dawn, the snake came out. It nearly got away but Alligator managed to get a hold of the
snake's tail and pulled it out while the woman hit it until it died. Then, she threw the snake into the fireplace,
watched by the woman and her eldest child.
From my own point of view, this is a story about how a woman's effort in protecting her children against the
danger. The danger here referred to the snake that the woman believed was a deathly threat to the whole family.
She took protective measures and waited patiently until the snake came out and killed it. I think a mother will
automatically becomes protective and defending when a danger try to approach her family. Also, love and fear of
losing loved ones are also the reason of a mother to act solely and bravely on her own.
Secondly, from my own perspective, it is a mother's duty to be responsible, brave and thoughtful for her own
family. In the case of the drover's wife, she must protect her children no matter how fearful she felt about the
snake's presence. This type of protection does not just apply to humans but animals do the same thing too.
Furthermore, a mother should always be authoritative and forbid her children from doing dangerous things in order
to not let her children from getting into trouble.
I like very much this short story, The Drovers Wife. It much relate to me and also other people who have mother
or wife. This story shows the culture of Australian bush. Even this story happen at there, but Im really sure the
same story happen at the whole world. The mother, her children and the hard, poor and pity daily lifestyle. This
short story shows how the pity mother who left by his husband for taking sheep to the market survive and taking
care of her children for whole six month in the freaky bush area. As we know the mother was brave when hitting
the snake until die for protecting their children. Here was show that women Australian bush was very brave. Maybe
because of the environment factor. Is it true? I do not know but the narrator wants to tell us that the pity and
poor women still can protect her family. We as Malaysian could take this value to encourage single mother who
have died their husband and need to survive for raising their children.
As mentioned in your personal view on 'The Necklace' story, we have the same thinking and opinion about the lady
named 'Mathilde'. Well, look how poor she is at the end of the story. Whereas the beauty that she proud of wasn't
found in the heart, nor in the eyes anymore. She has to suffer more than ever, just because she never satisfied
with her life before.
For other ladies for sure, having a husband like Loisel would be a pleasant gift from God. But for Mathilde,
everything seems not enough for her. She always dreamt about being rich people and wants to be just like them,
wearing beautiful clothes, expensive jewelries and so on. She knew and realized that her husband wouldn't afford
to give all the things that she wants, but still, she stay to be ungrateful wife. She always put her husband to feel
guilty whenever he failed to fulfill her wish then makes Loisel put more effort on his work and forget his own dream
just to please Mathilde's desire.
When it comes to the time that she've lost the necklace, afterwards she learnt the real lesson. Their condition
change from poor to poorer, and for ten years, they have to work hard to pay all the debts that they have used to
replace the lost necklace. The incident really changed Mathilde's personality after all, but it is too late. There's
nothing left to do other than waiting for their independence day.
At the moment she knew from Mdm. Forestier that the necklace was fake, I can imagine how she feel. If I was at
her place, perhaps I might get a heart attack! Haha.. You got served! Therefore, we need to be grateful and
appreciate what we have in our life. Don't be like Mathilde. Other moral value is that, whenever we do any
mistakes, we have to admit what we've done so that there won't be any trouble such being faced by the couple.
HI everyone...My favourite short story is... The Drovers Wife. It much relate to people who have mother or wife
just like us. . This story shows the culture of Australia. BUt this story not only happen in Australia but it's happen
all over the world. Maybe in malaysia also got story like that.
The mother, her children and the hard, poor and pity daily lifestyle. This short story shows how the pity mother
who left by his husband for taking sheep to the market survive and taking care of her children for whole six month
in the freaky bush area. As we know the mother was brave when hitting the snake until die for protecting their
children. Wow... she was very brave. How? This is what we call by mother's love.
The narrator wants to tell us that the pity and poor women still can protect her family. So we us a daughters and
sons must know how to appreacite mothjer's love.
What a great thought about this story. Regarding to your Q, What do you feel if your father is not around for a long
time? I think it will be totally weird especially if the father leaves his children since they were very young and dont
even know about the warmth of fathers love. When I read this story, i was totally respected with the drovers wife.
She leads a hard life without her husband which is away long periods of time. She tend to cope with all the
problems that she faced by herself and she doesnt complain about it. Its rare to find such a woman in these
worlds.
In this story, we also can look how Tommy is very sensitive about her mothers feelings. He tried his best to
comfort his mothers heart which is full with sadness and loneliness. I do hope so that all of us can do the same
things. We do love our mother, dont we? The one who give birth and risen we up till this day with so much hurts
and difficulties should at least get loves from their own child. Dont you agree?
