Material Project

1. Sensory: A sensory center can be found in any age from early

childhood to maybe Kindergarten is when they are most popular.
Sensory can include things like a sensory bin. The most common things
found in a sensory bin would be things like water and sand. Having a
sensory center helps development such as problem solving, for
example you can have a water bin and kids can try and figure out why
certain objects are floating and why some are sinking.

2. Arts and Crafts: An arts and crafts center sound be found in classes of
every age. If children no longer have art and crafts center they should
have access to an art class in order to still get the benefits out of art. In
an art class or center you should be able to find things such as paints,
colors, scissors, and stencils. Arts and crafts are imperative, because it
gives children the ability to expresses them creative, and for a lot of
students art time is learning, but it is also a brain break. Something
that these students have to focus as hard in.

3. Reading: A reading center should and can be found in most

classrooms. Even core classroom at a younger age level such as
elementary school. A reading center should be an area set in a quiet
part of the classroom. This should be more of a relaxing are, maybe
some bean bags and comfy chairs. There should be a variety of books,
magazines etc. Reading is important to have because it strengths
language. Reading forces children to have to learn how to sound out
words and it ends up expanding their vocabulary.

4. Math and Manipulative: A math and manipulative center is found in

preschool classroom. Math will not be found in very early education,
but manipulative. These two factors are important to number skills.
Even if it is something as small as counting to 5. Counters are
considered math and manipulative, and good resources to be put in
this center. A lot of the time this center is played pretty independently
so it tends to be a quiet center. Developing number sense and hand on
fine motor skills can be challenging so kids like to focus and work
independently.

5. Dramatic Play: Dramatic play is also considered dress or playing house.

Most of the time this center is found in early education preschools.
Dramatic play is important because it helps development an extensive
amount of domains. Dressing up and pretending can give kids better
cognitive, social, emotional, and creative. Dramatic play is a louder
center so it probably should be placed on the opposite end of the class
from the door as well as away from the library. In a dramatic play
center there should maybe a play table, kitchen and some dress up
clothes. A good idea for this center is to also rotate what is in it. Maybe
one week it can be home and another it can a grocery store or flower
shop.

6. Nature and Science: A nature and Science center are not required to be
in a class, but they tend to be well liked by kids. In a science center
they can perform science experiments or make cool projects like
tornado soda bottles. This center does really well placed next to a
window, because a lot of science includes nature and weather, which is
a part of nature. From the window view this center already becomes a
more interactive place for the kids to go. In a science center the
students can find things like a thermometer, or stuff to feel fake snow.
This center can be a really good way to develop fine motor and
cognitive skills.

7. Puzzles and Blocks: A major part of a child developmental process is

problem solving. We face problems in all ages and stages in life so it is
good for young kids to learn early on what to do and how to handle it.
As well as stacking is one the major developmental milestone. The
blocks and puzzle station can be found in ages early childhood until
Kinder. We start introducing puzzles and blocks at a very young age.
For infants this is good because it also is fine motor. Helps them learn

how to use their little hands in order to grasp things. In this center
there should be a wide ranger of puzzle varying in difficulty level
because some kids are on different steps in puzzle solving. As well as
there should be a far amount of different types of block shapes and
sizes. Building is no fun if everything is the same shape and size.
Provided the students a selection so they can expand their creative
horizons.

8. Music: A final center that is problem one for the most difficult is music.
We all love music and singing and dancing, but sometimes it is hard to
incorporate into a classroom when it can get extremely loud. My
suggestion for music is to have a center for it in the class and use it to
be and open center as a reward, other then that on a daily basis use
music as a group exercise maybe during circle time. Music is much like
a physical are and once it is no longer a center kids still go to a music
class. Once again his helps their social and creative skills. If you choose
to make music a center I would suggest using quieter instruments such
as rain stick and maybe a small tamerbine. Putting a drum set in your
music section would not be brightest idea. This is such a fun center I
would for sure keep it in the classroom if possible even if it is just as a
group.
