GeneralSchoomakerretiredfromactiveserviceon1December2000astheCommanderinChief,UnitedStatesSpecialOperations
Command,andwasrecalledtoactivedutyasthe35thChiefofStaff,UnitedStatesArmy,on1August2003.On10April2007,hereturned
toretiredstatusaftermorethan35yearsofserviceinavarietyofcommandandstaffassignmentswithbothconventionalandspecial
operationsforces.Duringhisservice,heparticipatedinnumerousoperationaldeployments,includingDESERTONEinIran,URGENT
FURYinGrenada,variousoperationsinLebanonandElSalvador,JUSTCAUSEinPanama,DESERTSHIELD/DESERTSTORMin
SouthwestAsia,UPHOLDDEMOCRACYinHaiti,andsupportedmanyotherworldwidejointcontingencyoperations,includingthosein
theBalkans,Afghanistan,Iraq,andtheGlobalWaronTerror.
Earlyinhiscareer,GeneralSchoomakerservedeightyearsinCavalry,Infantry,andArmorassignmentsintheUnitedStates,Germany,
andKorea.InJanuary1978,hejoinedthenewlyformingDeltaForceasoneoftheoriginaloperationaltroopcommandersintherankof
Captain,andcontinuedtoservethereinavarietyofcommandassignmentsovermuchofthenext14years.AsaColonel,hecommanded
DeltaForcefromJune1989untilJune1992,whenhedepartedforhisfirstGeneralOfficerassignmentasaBrigadierGeneral.
GeneralOfficerassignmentsincluded:
AssistantDivisionCommander,FirstCavalryDivision,FortHood,TXfromJuly1992untilJuly1993DeputyDirectorforOperations,
Readiness,andMobilizationatHeadquarters,DepartmentoftheArmy,fromJuly1993untilJuly1994CommandingGeneral,Joint
SpecialOperationsCommand(JSOC)atFtBragg,NC,fromJuly1994untilJuly1996andCommandingGeneral,USArmySpecial
OperationsCommand(USASOC)atFtBragg,NCfromAugust1996untilOctober1997.On31October1997,hewaspromotedto
General,andsubsequentlyservedastheCommanderinChief,UnitedStatesSpecialOperationsCommand(USSOCOM)atMacDillAFB,
FLuntilretiringon1December2000.
GeneralSchoomakersawardsanddecorationsincludethreeDefenseDistinguishedServiceMedals,threeArmyDistinguishedService
Medals,fourDefenseSuperiorServiceMedals,threeLegionsofMerit,twoBronzeStarMedals,theCombatInfantrymanBadge,Master
ParachutistBadgeandHALOWings,theSpecialForcesTab,andtheRangerTab.ForeignawardsincludetheBrazilianOrderofMilitary
Merit(DegreeofGrandeOfficial)theCanadianMilitaryServiceCrosstheFrenchRepublicCommanderoftheLegionofHonorthe
ItalianJointForcesDecorationofHonortheJapaneseGrandCordonoftheOrderoftheRisingSuntheSpanishGrandCrossofMilitary
Merit(White)andtheTurkishLegionofMerit.
GeneralSchoomakerservesasaDirectorfortheSpecialOperationsWarriorFoundation.Heandhiswifehavetwodaughtersandone
son.
