Reading Nook
As we approach the end of the first quarter, we are
entering the project part of our novel study. We
have finished reading The Chocolate Touch and
students will be choosing a project from three
different options to complete in class. The purpose
of the project is to help students synthesize what
they have learned about the novel.
Students have been working on reading the text
carefully, making inferences, and answering
questions about the book using evidence from the
text to support their answers. We will continue to
work on these skills throughout the year.

The past few weeks in math we

have been focusing on Geometry.
Students have explored various
types of polygons and 3D shapes.
They have really enjoyed using
Geoboards (peg boards with rubber
bands) to make various shapes,
discuss vertices and angles. We
also connected several Geoboards
to make a giant array!
We also have been taking shapes
apart and discussing lines of
symmetry and pieces of shapes
(halves, fourths, eighths). Our
investigation led us to conclude
that shapes that are not congruent
can also be the same size.
To conclude the quarter, students
will be making blueprints and
models for a playground. They will
use their knowledge of shapes and
portions to complete the
assignment.
