Politics

The municipal council consists of seventy-ve members

elected by mixed-member proportional representation.
Thirty-eight councillors are elected by rst-past-the-post
voting in thirty-eight wards, while the remaining thirtyseven are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received. In the election of 18 May 2011
the African National Congress (ANC) won a majority of
sixty-four seats on the council. The following table shows
the results of the election.[5][6]
The independent councillor joined the Democratic Alliance (DA) in 2013, triggering a by-election in which he
won back his seat. The DA thus increased their representation to six seats on the council.[7]
