Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia

(GEPI)

The Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia (GEPI) is part of a wider global initiative
called the Global Entrepreneurship Program (GEP) which grew out of President Obamas A
New Beginning speech in Cairo in 2009 to promote entrepreneurship as a key pillar of
economic development among developing countries. GEPI was formally established in
January 2011 in Jakarta, founded by a group of prominent Indonesian entrepreneurs and
business leaders aiming to catalyze Indonesias entrepreneurship ecosystem by working in
partnership with existing programs and linking aspiring Indonesian entrepreneurs to global
developments and prospects.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Indonesia is a booming economy but startups form a very low percentage of companies
(0.18) compared to developing countries (2.0%). Having a robust entrepreneurship culture
will create sustained wealth for a new portion of the population while driving larger
economic growth through job creation and innovation. This is required to reduce the wealth
gap and increase livelihood standard while empowering the people.
GEPI, in a partnership with LGT Venture Philanthropy - an impact and social investment
fund based out of Liechtenstein, will be pursuing to acquire business plan submissions from
across Indonesia for social enterprises. These business plans and companies will form a
potential pipeline for active investment in equity, debt, or convertible debt. The intern will
help solicit and acquire business plans, assess, value, and determine feasibility of
investment for these social enterprises based on financial returns as well as social and/or
environmental impact
GEPI is also supporting a Business Plan Competition focused on Waste Management in
partnership with the UM School of Natural Resources and the Environment (SNRE), as well
as launch an incubator and an Angel Investment Network.
The intern will have real project development, strategy, and implementation exposure in
this internship and not merely focused on research and theory. He/she will be a critical
team member in developing the business model of the incubator (rent, equity investment,
or hybrid) as well as conduct reviews on business plans to assess who gets approved for
access. The intern will also work on a highly impactful investment program in partnership
with LGT Venture Philanthropy to catalyze investment to up to 5 social enterprises focusing
on sustainability and social impact.

The intern is expected to:

Establish a business incubator already under construction;
Aid development of investor financing options
Develop a potential pipeline for active investment in equity, debt, or convertible debt
Identify and perform due diligence on social entrepreneurship-focused business
proposals for seed funding (in collaboration with LGT, a Liechtenstein based private
equity fund)
Help establish an "angel investor" network (in collaboration with Indonesian
investors)
Liaise with a team of University of Michigan Masters students from the School of
Natural Resources (SNRE) to facilitate the launch of an entrepreneurship competition
in 2012.
Expected outcomes:
Invest in 3-5 social enterprises
Provide ongoing capacity building support in terms of business strategy, planning,
financial planning, operations, and marketing where appropriate
Grow the business in valuation with the hopes of a larger second round financing in 12 years
Expand the reach and social benefits of the social enterprise
Separately, launch Indonesia's first open co-working space incubator
Design mentorship and workshop programs to support startup entrepreneurs and
assist them to drive to scale
Create business successes and thus enhance the entrepreneurship ecosystem and a
naturally occurring mentor network
Deliverables
A pipeline for active investment in equity, debt, or convertible debt
A 12-24 month operational plan
On a daily basis, the intern will work directly with the GEPI Executive Director. At project
conclusion, the interns findings will be presented to the GEPI Board of Directors.
