16.32livebirthsper1,000inhabitantsandamortalityrateof7.54
deathsper1,000inhabitants.
Theproportionofpeopleunder15,at24.6%,issomewhatbelowthe
worldaverage(28%),andthecohortofpeople65andolderis
relativelyhigh,at10.8%.Thepercentageofseniorcitizensin
ArgentinahaslongbeensecondonlytoUruguayinLatinAmerica
andwellabovetheworldaverage,whichiscurrently7%.
Argentina'spopulationhaslonghadoneofLatinAmerica'slowest
birthratesandpopulationgrowthrates(recently,about1%ayear),
butitenjoysacomparativelylowinfantmortalityrate.Themedian
ageisapproximately30yearsandlifeexpectancyatbirthisof76
years.Accordingtoanofficialculturalconsumptionsurvey
conductedin2006,42.3%ofArgentinesspeakEnglish(thoughonly
15.4%ofthoseclaimedtohaveahighlevelofEnglish
