similarlysizedregions,PeninsularMalaysiaandEast
Malaysia(MalaysianBorneo).PeninsularMalaysiasharesa
landandmaritimeborderwithThailandandmaritime
borderswithSingapore,Vietnam,andIndonesia.East
MalaysiashareslandandmaritimeborderswithBruneiand
IndonesiaandamaritimeborderwiththePhilippinesand
Vietnam.ThecapitalcityisKualaLumpur,whilePutrajaya
istheseatofthefederalgovernment.Withapopulationof
over30million,Malaysiaisthe44thmostpopulouscountry.
ThesouthernmostpointofcontinentalEurasia,TanjungPiai,
isinMalaysia.Locatedinthetropics,Malaysiaisoneof17
megadiversecountriesonearth,withlargenumbersof
endemicspecies.
MalaysiahasitsoriginsintheMalaykingdomspresentin
theareawhich,fromthe18thcentury,becamesubjecttothe
BritishEmpire.ThefirstBritishterritorieswereknownas
theStraitsSettlements,whoseestablishmentwasfollowed
bytheMalaykingdomsbecomingBritishprotectorates.The
territoriesonPeninsularMalaysiawerefirstunifiedasthe
MalayanUnionin1946.Malayawasrestructuredasthe
FederationofMalayain1948,andachievedindependence
on31August1957.MalayaunitedwithNorthBorneo,
Sarawak,andSingaporeon16September1963.Lessthan
twoyearslaterin1965,Singaporewasexpelledfromthe
federation.[9]
Thecountryismultiethnicandmulticultural,whichplaysa
largeroleinpolitics.Abouthalfthepopulationisethnically
Malay,withlargeminoritiesofMalaysianChinese,
MalaysianIndians,andindigenouspeoples.Theconstitution
declaresIslamthestatereligionwhileallowingfreedomof
religionfornonMuslims.Thegovernmentsystemisclosely
modelledontheWestminsterparliamentarysystemandthe
legalsystemisbasedoncommonlaw.Theheadofstateis
theking,knownastheYangdiPertuanAgong.Heisan
electedmonarchchosenfromthehereditaryrulersofthe
nineMalaystateseveryfiveyears.Theheadofgovernment
istheprimeminister.
