Pedagogy
IIFM provides the contemporary classroom learning using methods like case analysis and conceptual discussions
based on the same, along with review of literature on various topics given as assignments and presentations.
Subjects like Natural Resource Management in Rural Development (NRD) are taught from conservation as well as
development perspectives so that students could develop a holistic understanding of the critical issues related to
natural resource management and rural development. General Management courses of finance and marketing
are taught through both corporate as well as rural development perspectives. These methods induce self-study
and group work among the students which enhance the interpersonal skills and inculcate the spirit of team work.
The curriculum has effectively expanded the horizon of knowledge and opportunities for the students in the field
of sustainable development, rural development, marketing, research and consultancy, financial services and even
beyond these.
Field Visits
Two field visits, first after the 2nd
semester and second after the 5th
semester are essential part of the
curriculum. These FVs of 15-20 days
help students to understand the
various aspects of the sustainable
development. The FVs include visits
to industries, rural and tribal areas,
national parks, NGOs, renewable
energy projects, state forest
departments, plantations, eco-tourism
sites, warehouses etc across various
states of India. These visits not only
give grassroot level knowledge to the
students but also help them develop
their wisdom to take balanced
decision in professional career. Apart
from these FVs, many other one-day
field visits are undertaken by the
students which are course specific.
Case Study
Classroom sessions are aided
through various methods one of
the most important of which is case
analysis. The case studies used are
from elite national and international
publications and cover not only
international cases but also covers the
South Asian perspectives. Case studies
cut across various organizations
and issues and therefore they are of
strategic importance in understanding
various problems.
10
Summer Internship
A ten week compulsory summer
internship program with various
organizations ranging from
financial institutions, environmental
& development organizations,
international and national NGOs,
government organizations and MNCs,
provides opportunities for the students
to apply academic knowledge to
real time managerial problems.
This is the time when students get
exposed to professional setup.
IIFMites have succeeded consistently
in strengthening bond between SI
Research and

TESTIMONIALS
IIFM has been the foundation on which I have built my
career and an everlasting bond and some great friends.
The environs of the institute provided the solitude and
companionship- at the same time- to learn, play and work
in teams. The exposure that 18 months at the institute
provided has guided me and helped me with my work over
the last 19 years. It continues to be a space that I would like
to go back to.
Jayesh Bhatia (PFM 1994)
NR Management Consultants India Private Limited
A decade after my class graduated from IIFM, I look back
and feel that the most important attributes we gained
from those two years were humility and adaptability.
IIFM opened up a different side of the world to us and at
a very early stage in our career we learnt (and in various
instances, experienced firsthand), the impact of social and
environmental issues on communities and their
habitats. The extensive field experience and the niche
focus of the curriculum were instrumental in preparing us
in diverse ways for the responsibilities and opportunities
ahead.
Shikha Kalra (PFM 2003)
Rabobank International, London
To say the least, IIFM has played an integral role in shaping
my career and has helped me in not only becoming a
successful professional but more importantly a better
person! A launching pad always critical for any successful
career in social development, IIFM has helped immensely
in providing me the required stepping stone. Apart from
the technical and management aspects, few of the other
attributes which IIFM has helped me to develop are
leadership qualities, ability to work effectively with a wide
range of personalities and to do multi-tasking effectively
without getting stressed. These qualities have helped me
to work successfully on senior/middle level management
positions with organizations like UNICEF, International HIV/
AIDS Alliance and at present FANSA.I am proud to be an
alumnus of this esteemed institute and would strongly
recommend reputed organizations to go all out in
recruiting IIFM students as part of their campus
recruitments !
