Poltergeist Deconstruction

The non-diegetic sound in the

background sounds like a tv
crackling and breaking up with some
religious music over the top. Both of
these things are stereotypical heard
in most horror films as it tends to
scare the audience and put them on
edge. These sounds may of been
used to connote the creepiness in
the film and the way the poltergeist
works as it sounds like the tv has lost
connection so it might mean the
poltergeist blocks out everyones
connections.

In this establishing shot, you can see

that the film is set in the
country-side. The name of the film is
placed on the grass and almost looks
like a shadow on the grass which
looks subtle but eary. This may of
been used to connote that the
poltergeist in the film doesnt stand
out but you are aware that it is
there. This shot is very counter
typical in a horror movie as normally,
most shots have quite dark lighting
and foggy backgrounds to help show
the spookiness of the film.

In this shot, you can see a almost

dead tree next to a house. The trees
branches and leaves are a lot darker
than most other trees. The blackness
of the tree roots may of been used
to connote the death and darkness
of the film and the death throughout
the film.

In the background of this shot, there

is a sequence non-diegetic music
which is made from different string
instruments. The music may of been
used to connote that the boy on the
right of the mid shot is intrigued by
the tree and almost hypnotised by it.

In this shot, you can clearly see a

small boy emerging from a set of
stairs. The lighting around the
stairway is dark and quite mystical
which may of been used to suggest
that later on in the film, all the bad
stuff that happens to the family
happens either on the stairs on in
the room that the stairs lead up to.

I screenshotted this closer shot of

the stairs because the lighting again
suggests that the film may be
focused about the stairs or the room
it lead to. The red carpet leading up
the stairs may of been used to
connote the death and blood
throughout the film.

In this low angle shot that has been

shot between a door, this may of
been used to represent that
someone is watching the child walk
around the house.
The child in this shot is wearing
normal clothes for his age, he is also
wearing a watch which might of
been used to connote that he comes
from a well off family.

In this long shot, you see a small girl

talking to someone in a wardrobe.
Her shadow from the light coming in
from the window has make an odd
shape which might off been used to
connote that there is an odd
creature/thing behind the door.

In this close up, you can see the

childs emotions and he looks very
confused. This may been used to
connote that he doesnt feel
comfortable in the house and knows
something isnt right.
He is wearing a dark blue jumper
which may of chosen to help
connote that he is quite confident
and not afraid to stand up for
himself as dark blue symbolises
confidence.
