Sample Lesson Plan

Day:Friday Date: 14.10.16 Time: 11:00 Class: PP/Yr 1

Subject: Sport Topic: Catching and throwing
Students Prior Knowledge and Experience:
Children have basic knowledge about how to catch and throw. Children have not been shown
how to break down the skill of both.
Learning Purposes:

Student Evaluation:

Fundamental movement skills

involving the control of objects in
simple games:
Catch
Object control skills
Throw

Through out these activities I will ensure

all children are involved through
observation, if a child is not
participating they might need help
throwing or catching, a teacher can
then, step in and help. Through
observation I will be able to tell if
students are catching and throwing
effectively.

Preparation and Resources:

(Detail what resources will be used and what other preparation of the learning environment
will be required)
Cones
Hula Hoops/Buckets
Bean bags
Whistle
Two certificates

Timing:

Learning Experiences:
(Specify the discussion and activities that will take place. Divide into sections for
Introduction, Main body of lesson, Closure and Transition to next lesson)

4 min

Introduction:
Get students outside and let them know we will be doing sport today and
practicing our catching and throwing. Let students know I will be choosing 1 boy
and 1 girl to get a prize at the end, and that I will be choosing students who
participate, are sensible and are team players.
Let students know that if I have to give them 3 warnings for misbehaving they will
have to sit out and they wont be in the running for the prize.
Then get students onto the straight line ready for octopus tag.

10 min

Warm up:
Octopus Tag

Line students up into one straight line

Aim is to run from one base line to the other without getting tagged
Two students are to be named it in the middle of the two base lines
Explain that if you get tagged you must sit on your bottom and try and tag

10 min

your friends when they run passed, once a student has gotten to the other
base line let them know to run back to the other base line, last one to not
get tagged wins.
Constantly give out praise to students doing well and try and make sure
everyone is involved.
Once there has been a few games of this get the students to sit down on
the grass and call out tables 1,2, 3 and 4 to go and get a drink and when
they return get tables 5 and 6 to go get a drink.
Throwing and catching with partners

Remind students I am looking for students to give a prize to at the end and
I am looking for team players
Demonstrate appropriate throwing and catching
Today we are going to be using the underarm throw. To show you what an
underarm throw looks like and what is appropriate I will be using Ms Lally
to demonstrate.
Tell students that they need to have their knees slightly bent, opposite foot
forward, and swing arm through to the target, which is Ms Lallys hands (Ms
Lally will have her hands cupped and arms out ready to catch the bean
bag)
To catch I will have Ms Lally throw me the ball and demonstrate and tell
students to have eyes on the ball, hands cupped and arms are out in front
of me.
After the throw and catch have both been demonstrated explain to
students that they will be pairing off with their pencil pot partner. *Remind
students I am looking for two students that participate well. Ask them to
come and collect 1 beanbag between two and find a spot close by and to
start throwing and catching. After the students have 3-4 practice catches
and throws get students attention and tell students we are going to have a
competition. The first pair to 15 successful catches wins, once they have
gotten to 15 catches sit down, remind them to count their catches aloud so
I can hear how well they are catching.

10 min

Hoop Throws
Get students to put beanbags in a pile and to come and sit down in front of
the hoop throw activity
Get students attention and model how to throw again, knees slightly bent,
opposite foot forward and aim for your target and swing your arm through.
Remind them that we are aiming to get the bean bags in the
hoops/buckets and that we are going to be taking it in turns with your
team one thrower at a time, once you have had one throw, pick up the
beanbag and return it to your partner to have a go.
Tell students that I am now going to be giving you a number and to
remember your number. Once I have given out all the numbers walk over
to cone 1 and get students that were given a number 1 to come over, and
the same for cones 2,3 and 4.
Command students to start throwing and aiming to get it inside the
hoop/buckets.

5 min

Cool down
Stop students and pick 4 students to collect equipment, and get students
to form a circle.
Praise students for catching and throwing so well today.

Stand in the circle with the students and explain we are going to be
stretching to cool down our bodies.
Demonstrate a stretch and get the students to copy and tell them we need
to stretch our muscles so we dont get sore.
Do two more stretches, and give out the two certificates.
Finally, get students to form a line and take them back to class, stopping at
the drink fountains on the way.

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the success of the lesson)
I thoroughly enjoyed this lesson. It was extremely successful and students really showed the
aspects I was looking for which was breaking down the skill of catching and throwing and
focusing on this. The students seemed to really enjoy this Phys-Ed lesson, and everyone was
engaged and focussed. Positive talk really helped in this lesson, for example, I really like
how youre bending your knees when your throwing and I like how your keeping your eyes
on the ball. My mentor teacher suggested that if I did this again she would like me to use
coloured cones for the octopus tag. So instead of instruction students to go and stand over
at the start cones and run to the other side to instead put all blue cones on one side and
yellow on the other and explain to start at the blue cones and then run to the yellow cones.
In, summary this was by far my favourite and most successful lesson!

NOTE: As long as all the above components are included, there is no set format that must be
used for writing the lesson plan. A sample proforma is provided in this booklet but Pre-service
teachers are free to alter the layout and add other sections as they choose.
