Introduction
Liquefied natural gas,or LNG,is natural gas that has been super
cooled to - 164C. At that temperature, natural gas condenses a
liquid. When in liquid form, natural gas takes 600 times less space
than in its gaseous state, which makes it feasible to
transport over long distances. In the form of LNG, natural gas can
be shipped from the parts of the world where it is abundant to
where it is demand.Various structures are manufactured from
carbon steels,CrNi steels and 5% or 9% Ni steels for transport

and storage. The temperatures which exist require the use of weld

fillers which achieve high mechanical quality values.
For cryogenic temperatures applications only Ni-based and
austenitic weld metals are to be used in order to comply with
the ductility and strength requirements.
UTP offers product for SMAW, SAW, GMAW and FCW.

The liquefaction temperature for some types of gas can be seen in this table

Austenitic stainless steel

The base materials : 5% and 9% nickel steels

These particular qualities are worldwide being applied for the
construction of Ethylene and LNG tanks.

Al alloys

The metallurgical composition of these base materials and out of

these their resulting chemical and temperature appearance and
mechanical properties justify the application in this field.
Even in temperatures of -196 C the mechanical values are
excellent. This is one of the reasons why these high nickelcontaining weld filler materials are highly suitable for welding
5% and 9% nickel steels, because of:

its very good notch impact values at -196C

its resistance against embrittlement
its thermal expansion coefficient being similar to the one
of these base metals
its the high tensil strength
Both 5% and 9% nickel steels have very good weldability and are
welded with Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) with covered
electrodes and with Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) and flux
cored wire (FCW).

SUCCESSFULL APPLICATIONS AND ECONOMIC SOLUTIONS FOR THE LNG INDUSTRY

UTP`s range of weld filler materials for cryogenic

applications will meet the highest requirements
because of the outstanding mechanical properties.

Quality and safety is our main concern and

consequently a guarantee for the exceptional
standard of UTPs welding consumables.
