Answer all questions

Re = Radius of earth = 6370km, GMe = 398600 km3 /s2
1. Show that Keplers second law of planetary motion is valid for a mass moving in
any central force-field
10
2. Derive the rocket equation and using it justify the use of multi-stage rockets 15
3. A rocket with a mass ratio of 50 is used to launch a satellite into a pre-determined
orbit. If this rocket is launched from the equator so as to utilize the rotational
velocity of the earth, determine the percentage increase in the payload capacity
of the rocket. Assume a single stage rocket with an effective exhaust velocity of
3km/sec.
15
4. A glider with an L/D ratio of 20 and a mass of 1kg is released from a height of
100m. Calculate its range. What is the effect of an increase in weight on the
range
10
5. A 2D wing generates a lift of 20N per unit span area when the free stream velocity
is 20 m/sec, under ambient atmospheric conditions ( = 1.2kg/m3 ). Determine
the lift per unit span on this wing under identical conditions, but with a free
stream velocity of 10 m/sec. Also calculate the lift co-efficient of the wing under
these conditions
10
6. Explain why a Geo-synchronous satellite should always be placed in an equatorial
oribt with an orbital radius of 36,000Km
10
7. Explain how slats and flaps help reduce the take-off velocity of an aircraft

15

8. Explain the functioning of the rudder while the aircraft lands under conditions
with strong side-wind
5
9. Explain the procedure involved in making an aircraft execute a level co-ordinated
turn, clearly indicating the various control surfaces that need to be deployed 10
