Math - Adding/Subtracting Whole

Numbers

Learning Goals for this Lesson

Standards: CC.4.NBT.4; CC.4.NBT.3; CC.4.OA.3

Students Will Know:

How to add whole numbers and
determine whether solutions to
addition problems are reasonable.
How to subtract whole
numbers and determine whether
solutions to subtraction problems are
reasonable.

LEARNING-FOCUSED. All Rights Reserved.

Students Will Be Able To:

Fluently add and

subtract multi-digit whole
numbers using the standard
algorithm.
Use place value
understanding to round multidigit whole numbers to any
place.
Solve multistep word
problems posed with whole
numbers and having wholenumber answers using the
four operations, including
problems in which remainders
must be interpreted.
Represent these
problems using equations with
a letter standing for the
unknown quantity. Assess the
reasonableness of answers
using mental computation and
estimation strategies including
rounding.

Lesson Instruction
Learning Activity 1:
Teacher will draw place value chart on board and show students how to
properly align numbers according to place value.

When adding two numbers together, it is important to align place values

of both numbers. Why is it important to line up the addends by place
value when adding two numbers? Because that way you will be sure to
add the digits in the same place value together.

Teacher will explain that when two numbers in a place value equal ten or
higher, the 1 is carried over to above the place value to the left. Why?
Because, for example, when you have 11 ones, you have 1 ten and 1
one, thus the 1 in the tens place should be placed above the tens place in
the addition problem. This is called regrouping. You can add any two
numbers together, regardless of how many digits, or place values, are
present.

Teacher will walk students through adding four, five, and six digit numbers
together while explaining this:

735,915 + 78,009
999,999 + 123,456

Assessment Prompt for LA 1:

Students will be provided grid paper and dice. In pairs, students will
roll dice to create numbers (5 times for 10,000s number; 6 times for
100,000s number). One team members number will go on top, the
other on the bottom, and the students will use the grid paper to
properly align the numbers. Then, they must add the numbers
together. Pairs must create five sets of numbers to be added:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Learning Activity 2:
Teacher will revisit how to properly line up numbers according to place
value when adding. Then, the teacher will ask how students think they
might place number when subtracting.

First, the teacher will write the subtraction problem: 5,250 - 10,910. Can
we subtract the numbers as they are? No, because the subtrahend being
subtracted from is smaller than the number being taken away.

The teacher will then revert the equation: 10,910 - 5,250. The teacher will
ask students how we could properly subtract this equation. If the 5 is
placed under the 1, is the equation properly set up? Will the difference be
correct? How can we determine? The teacher will explain that students
should estimate. First, round both numbers to the highest place value
available for both before you put them in an equation. The equation
rounds to 11,000 - 5,000.

Assignment

Students will be
provided a sheet of grid
paper and four problems
(2 addition and 2
subtraction). Students
will need to properly
align the problems and
solve them. They must
estimate the answers
before solving, as well.

Learning Activity 3:
Teacher will work through pages 27, 28, 31 and the top of 32 with the
class, referring to what discussed in previous learning activities.

If students do not show signs of understanding, the teacher will review the
information with additional problems.
Assessment Prompt for LA 3:
In groups, students will complete bottom of page 28, and top of page 29;
and middle of page 32.

Individually, students will complete the On Your Own section of pages

29 and 32.
