Solution of an acid and its anion (that is, its conjugate base) or of a base and its common

of solution changes very little. pH of buffer solution can be computed as
Conjugate Base
For acidic buffer: pH = pKa + log

It is generally accepted that a solution has useful buffer capacity (pH change resisting
power) provided that the value of [salt or conjugate base] / [acid] for acidic buffer lies within
the range of 1:10 to 10:1. Buffer capacity is max, when [conjugate base]=[acid]

A proper control of pH is very essential for many industrial as well as biological processes.
Solution with a definite pH can be prepared from single salts or mixtures of acids/base and

pH value. Such solutions are called Buffer solutions.
For weak acid and base used by a chemist, data are given below:
Ka = 1.810-5, Kb = 1.810-5
Also logarithmic values of some numbers are given below:
log 1.8 = 0.2553, log 2 = 0.3010, log 3 = 0.4771, log 5 = 0.6990.
