Van Wieringen is always praised
for his spectacular work The Explosion
of the Spanish Admiral's Ship at the
Battle of Gibraltar because of his
innovative approach, concentrating
on a single dramatic moment. Before
this, portrayals of naval battles were
usually great melees of fighting vessels.
But in this painting, four years earlier,
Vroom had already opted for an
enlargement, zooming in on one
dramatic event.2 Almost never before
