Question #2.

(35 points) The Professor family of Littlerichtown, adopted four children: Juan (they call him
Bill) adopted at 2 months from Peru; Alexandra, adopted at age 1 from Russia; Barak (they call him Joe),
adopted at age 5 from Kenya, and Ling Yi (they call her Jane), adopted at 4 months from Taiwan. Bill is
now 15, Alexandra is 12, Joe is 8, and Jane is 5. As parents, they have had many concerns over the
years, some of which were related to typical developmental issues and some which seemed to have been
triggered by issues related to adoption.

Right now Bill is engaging in many risky behaviors with a Hispanic group at his school, Alexandra
complains of not having any friends because she is not good at sports, Joe is having difficulty
with attending to schoolwork, and Jane is having separation problems in kindergarten. They have
decided to go into family counseling to resolve some issues. They can see counselor Ogbu,
Bronfenbrenner, Thelen, Gottlieb, Plomin, Gesell, Gibson, or McGraw. Choose 1 of these
counselors and tell how they would probably work with the family, Be sure to speak from their
theoretical orientation and use concepts from their theories:
What 2 questions might the counselor ask the family? What hypotheses might they have about
developmental issues each of the children might be facing? What suggestions/explanations for
solving these problem behaviors might they give?

What 2 questions might the counselor ask the family?

Bronfenbrenners theory covers

From Ogbus theory we can conclude that different types of minority groups face their own set of
difficulties. In this case, categorizing Bill in the involuntary immigrant group is appropriate
because he was brought to US from Peru and adopted by white parents. So if we look at his case
from this perspective we can come up with two questions:
How is he perceiving himself being adopted by white parents, does he feel like he belongs to that
family or is he having difficulties with accommodation in the school environment? Maybe he
feels pressure from his peers who share the same race as he, and is afraid of being alienated from
his own culture/friends and therefore engages in risky behaviors as a means of not losing his
identity.

What hypotheses might they have about developmental issues each of the children might be
facing?
Bills case can be explained through Bronfenbrenners ecological/biological theory. According to

this perspective, if the relationships in the microsystem are changing (in this case
Bill might not have good relations with his adoptive parents) than we can see that
other parts of the system start to change (he started to like mesosytem the child
will not have the tools to explore other parts of his environment. Children looking for
the affirmations that should be present in the child/parent (or child/other important
adult) relationship look for attention in inappropriate places. These deficiencies
show themselves especially in adolescence as anti-social behavior, lack of selfdiscipline, and inability to provide self-direction (Addison, 1992).

Bronfenbrenner in Bills case would suggest to start by analyzing the microsystemic

level of relationships. What changes are happening that are affecting his behavior in
school settings. Are they more preoccupied with younger siblings and are not
paying attention to him? For this specific reason because he needs their attention,
he decides to engage in such risky behaviors.
For Alexandras case, we can use

Developmental change affected by parental/cultural theories of success can be an explanation

of why Bill is having difficulties with attending to schoolwork.

Question #3. (30 points) In chapter 2, the term activated knowledge was discussed as a goal of this
course. Activated knowledge involves being able to explain the basic ideas and the underlying system of
ideas of a theory, to define important terminology in ones own words, to adopt the point of view of the
theorist and think within the theorys logic, and to relate these ideas to professional problems. Think back
over all the developmental theorists you have studied and select 1 theorist that activated you. Then
demonstrate your activated knowledge about that theorist:
Explain 3 basic ideas of the theory using the correct terminology of the theorist. Tell how these theoretical
ideas will be related to your professional practice in the future.

2According to the ecological theory, if the relationships in the immediate

microsystem break down, the child will not have the tools to explore other parts of
his environment. Children looking for the affirmations that should be present in the
child/parent (or child/other important adult) relationship look for attention in
inappropriate places. These deficiencies show themselves especially in adolescence
as anti-social behavior, lack of self-discipline, and inability to provide self-direction
(Addison, 1992).

Since the family is concerned about developmental issues and issues related to adoption, in order
to analyze Joes case (8y), John Ogbus theoretical perspective is the right one. Based on Ogbus
views on Joes problem, the question he might ask his adoptive parents is:
What kind of school Joe is attending (public/private) and with what group of peers he uses to
hang out.
I think this question will give to us an idea of the environment, Joe is a part of. Since he is
adopted from Kenya, maybe he is not accepted by the
