BiPolar Disorder Facts

Bipolar Disorder Fact Sheet


Bipolar disorder affects 2.6% of the U.S population and is a brain disorder characterized by unusual shifts
in energy, mood, and activity levels and ability to carry out daily tasks. There are four types of Bipolar
disorder that are distinguished by differing characteristics.
Bipolar I Disorder: is defined by manic episodes that last at least 7 days. It may be so severe that the
person needs immediate hospital care. Typically depressive episodes occur as well lasting at least 2
weeks. Even episodes of depression with mixed features are also possible.
Bipolar II Disorder: is defined by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes. Differing
from Bipolar I it doesnt have full-blown manic episodes.
Cyclothymic Disorder: defined by numerous periods of hypomanic symptoms as well numerous periods
of depressive symptoms lasting for at least 2 years (1 year in children and adolescents). However, the
symptoms do not meet the diagnostic requirements for a hypomanic episode and a depressive episode.
Other, Unspecified Bipolar and/or Related Disorders defined by the bipolar disorder symptoms that
do not entirely match the three categories listed above.
Sometimes, a person with severe episodes of mania or depression also has psychotic symptoms such as
hallucinations or delusions. The psychotic symptoms tend to match the persons extreme mood and may
manifest themselves as; believing they are famous, has a lot of money, or super powers, ruined, penniless,
or has committed a crime.
Treatment: People typically affected by the disorder are prescribed medication, psychotherapy,
supplements, and or life charts.

Classroom Accommodations:preferential seating especially near the door, assigned classmate as


volunteer assistant, prearranged or frequent breaks, tape recorder use, notetaker or photocopy of
another student's notes, early availability of syllabus and textbooks, availability of course materials on
disk, private feedback on academic performance.

Examination Accommodations: exams in alternate format, use of assistive computer software,


extended time for test taking, exams individually proctored or in a quiet room, increased frequency of
exams.

Assignment Accommodations:substitute assignments in specific circumstances, advance notice of


assignments, permission to submit assignments handwritten rather than typed, written assignments
instead of oral presentations or vice versa, assignments completed in dramatic formats,assignment
assistance during hospitalization, extended time to complete assignments.
