6 Tools for Editing and Recording Audio

If you have a large collection of music, you might have thought of editing the sound track for yourself by
adding or removing part of it. There are many audio editing tools available that allow you to do the same
edit audiofiles, like you edit text files by cut, copy and paste. Many of these tools also support audio
recording, if you are planning to create your own album then you can edit your tracks by yourself.
For multimedia developers these audio tools are a great gift, using these tools will enable you to mix,
edit, add effects etc. You can give life to lifeless songs by adding effects, gain back the lost quality by
changing frequencies. You can merge multiple tracks into one and create a long track or split a track into
multiple tracks.
Here in are six cool Audio tools that supports audio editing and recording so enjoy playing with your audio.
1) Audacity
Audacity is open source software and its among the popular free audio editing and recording utilities.
Using Audacity, you can record live audio through the microphone, line-in and you can also digitize
conventional recordings like cassette tapes, mini discs, etc.
If your sound card supports live audio streaming, then you can even record it as well. Editing audio files
using this software is no less than editing them using professional software. You can import and export
audio files in most of the commonly known formats like WAV, AU, MP3 and Ogg.

Editing sound tracks is simple like Cut, Copy and Paste and add or remove effects like echo, phaser,
reverb and remove unwanted background noises like hiss, hum, etc., from the tracks.
2) MP3 Audio Editor
This is another popular audio editing and recording tool available for free. Using this software you can
convert any music into CD quality music and you can also add effects, trim and process the sound track as
you desire. It supports various file formats like WAV. MP3, WMA, Ogg, etc., such that you can play, mix
and edit the files.

It supports multiple file editing at a time and you can merge files together using this software. MP3 audio
editor features a powerful noise reduction tool that eliminates any background noise. This is very helpful if
you are recording a live concert. The user interface is simple and it is easy to use and it features an
advance audio CD burner.
3) Power Sound Editor Free
If you are looking for a simple, but powerful audio editing tool then Power Sound Editor is your answer.
Using this software, you can record audio using the microphone and any other sound that your sound card
supports. Editing is so simple you can visually edit the sound track and see the changes as you edit on the
screen.

You can add any number of effects to the track like amplify, fade, Invert, Echo, etc., and it supports most of
the major audio file formats. You can also use this software to convert files from one format to another
without losing any quality. This software allows you to rip and burn audio CDs to various formats. The user
interface is so simple that even a new user can start editing in minutes and it is completely free.
4) Wavosaur

This audio editor features some of the advance features and it is completely free to use. It has all the
general features like cut, copy, paste and delete and allows you to work on multiple files at a time.
Advanced features in this software include; bit-depth convert, vocal removal, produces music loops and
batch processing.

It has support for ASIO, multichannel, recording from mic, sound card and any other sources. It can
support many of the major audio file formats and has support for the VST plug-in so that you can listen to
the changed effect in real time.
5) Traverso DAW
Traverso DAW is simple, but powerful when it comes to common audio editing and recording features. It
has limited features, but the included features will work as you would expect.

It has got a clean and simple user interface that allows you to start editing in minutes. You can edit and
save files in the file format you choose. With the built-in CD burner you can create your own audio CD with
just few clicks.
6) WaveSufer
It is a sound visualization and editing tool and is open source software that is available for free. With the
simple and logical interface, sound recording and editing is much more easy using this software. This
software can be used for research and can be used in the transcription industry to enhance the quality of
the sound file.

It supports common file formats like the WAV, AU, AIFF, MP3 and others. It supports various plugins so that
you can add new functionality to this application.

3DS MAX
3ds Max software provides a comprehensive 3D modeling, animation, rendering, and
compositing solution for games, film, and motion graphics artists. 3ds Max 2014 has new
tools for crowd generation, particle animation, and perspective matching, as well as
support for Microsoft DirectX 11 shaders."
3dS Max 2014 has an overwhelming number of features that make it to be a leading
product. These features include;
3D modeling and texturing
3D rendering
Vector map support
Improved viewport performance
Mesh and surface modeling
DX 11 viewport rendering

How these features enhance multimedia production:

The above listed features of 3DS Max 2014 all combine to create the leading 3D
modelling application of its time.
The extensive range of projects that can be created make it an appealing option for
any educational or training facility.
The features provided through the educational license of the software make it a useful
tool for mutlimedia classroom activities.
3DS Max provides multimedia students with proffesional software that can aid their
ambitions in the multimedia field and in their multimedia based education and training.
It gives students an opportunity to experience a program about 3D modelling and
animation, rather than to just learn ABOUT the capabilities of such an application, they
can use the application and enhance their own knowledge and foster their learning to
provide a further understanding of the content they are studying.
3DS Max enhances multimedia production through increasing the amount of people who
have access to such programs, through educational and training facilities. If it is
available, students are going to be able to create multimedia projects and enhance
multimedia production within education and training.

3DS MAX PROCESSES

Collecting
The program collects the mouse patterns and keyboard strokes and interprets them in a
manner to produce a 3D model.
The user defines what data is to be required, whether it is simply user input into the
illustration, or external input for the purpose of additional textures etc
Data sources are identified by the user. The data is then put into 3DS max, depending on
the individuals project and specifications.
The tools used to gather and collect the data for the software, are the following
hardware;
- Mouse
- Keyboard
- Potentially a scanner to collect external textures
3DS Max then collects all of this through user input and it is entered into the program
and then the information inputted is displayed.

As can be seen in the image above, an external image has been collected and inputted
into a 3DS Max project.
Organising
The information process that determines the format in which data will be arranged and
represent in the preparation for other information processes.
This is present in 3DS Max, as when a project is created it is for further uses, for
example in animations or further 3D compilation images
From 3DS Max, users choose how the data will be arranged and represented in
preparation for further uses by defining which image formats the project will be saved in
and represented in preparation for displaying.
The data collected from keystrokes and mouse patterns is organised into intelligible
representable information, ready to be analysed.
Analysing
This information process transforms data into information for users. It makes sense of
8

the data so people can understand it. It can include searching, sorting and comparing
data.
The data is transformed into information when the project is opened for editing or
creation in the program. This is what happens in 3DS Max.
Storing and retrieving: you can save and reload your 3DS Max file using the options in
the menu.
Transmitting and receiving: A 3DS Max project can be sent via the send option in the
menu as an email attachment or an internet fax. It can also be converted into an
alternate file type from within 3DS Max, to something such as j-peg, and then sent
through external pathways such as; Bluetooth on enabled devices.

For example, the above image is in j-peg format which is able to be easily and quickly
transmitted through any file transfer method.
Processing:
This information process manipulates data by updating and editing it. Processing alters
the actual data present in the system.
This is always present within 3DS Max software as it is a program created specifically for
the purpose of editing and creating 3d models. The tools within the program are
designed for editing pre-existing, and creating 3d modelling works.
9

Displaying:
3DS Max displays the created models in a rendered view, meaning, it shows the end
results of the models.

As can be seen in this image, a rendered (top image) versus non rendered view of the
project.
The rendered image is ready to be displayed for any applicable purpose.
